George Thorogood & The Destroyers - Ride 'Til I Die (2003)
Artist: George Thorogood & The Destroyers
     Album: Ride 'Til I Die
     Label: Eagle Records (USA)
     Year: 2003
     Genre: Blues
     Tracks: 13
     Time: appr. 47 min.
     Format: mp3, Bitrate: @ CBR 320
     Size: 41 MB + 46 MB

Fans of George Thorogood & the Destroyers would probably stage a minor rebellion if their man strayed from his well worn path of bloozy boogie. Luckily, there is no need to take up arms anytime soon as Thorogood's sound remains unchanged on Ride 'Til I Die. Good natured, guy at the end of the bar vocals, buzzing slide guitar and solid American blues rock are still the order of the day.

George Thorogood & The Destroyers - Maverick (1985)
Artist: George Thorogood & The Destroyers
     Album: Maverick
     Label: Beat Goes On (BGO)
     Year: 1985

     Tracks: 11
     Time: 42:54
     Format: mp3, Bitrate: @ CBR 320
     Size: 41 MB + 46 MB

George Thorogood is forever consistent and Maverick is more of the blues/rock driving sound the journeyman guitarist is known for. John Lee Hooker's "Crawling King Snake" is what you expect from this crew while "Memphis, Tennessee" bursts at the seams with George's trademark slide and Hank Carter's saxophone.

     Tracks: 10

     Size: 54 MB + 52 MB

Contains Thorogood's crowd-pleasing rendition of John Lee Hooker's "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer." Its basic approach -- heavy on Thorogood's bluesy guitar playing -- serves as the prototype for every Destroyers record that followed.

Dexter Gordon - More Power (1969)
     Artist: Dexter Gordon
     Album: More Power
     Year: 1969
     Label: Prestige
     Format: MP3 @320kbps
     Size: 94mb (RS.com)
     AMG: 4 stars

MORE POWER is the second album to draw from the late, great tenorman's April 1969 sessions (THE TOWER OF POWER was the first). It easily equals its predecessor in improvisational brilliance and inter- band chemistry. An unusual aspect of these sessions is the presence of a second tenor, the legendary James Moody, whose smooth, lyrical style contrasts well with Gordon's breathy urgency. The marvelous, underappreciated pianist Barry Harris provides thoughtful, expressive accompaniment throughout, creating a finely textured landscape over which Gordon can make his improvisational journeys. From the Brazilian-inflected feel on Jobim's "Meditation" to the rough-and-ready bop of the Tad Dameron classic "Lady Bird," MORE POWER glows with eloquence and warmth, making it an indispensable part of the Gordon catalogue. -- Cduniverse.com

Dexter Gordon - Homecoming     Artist: Dexter Gordon
Album: Homecoming (Live At The Village Vanguard)
     Year: 1976
     Label: Columbia
     Time: 111:21
     Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 kbps
     Size: 315mb total
     AMG: 4 stars

The acclaim that met Dexter Gordon when he returned to the United States after 14 years in Europe was completely unexpected. Not only did the jazz critics praise the great tenor but there were literally lines of young fans waiting to see his performances. This double CD, recorded during his historic first American tour, improved on the original double LP with the inclusion of previously unreleased versions of "Fried Bananas" and "Body and Soul." Gordon in a quintet with trumpeter Woody Shaw, pianist Ronnie Mathews, bassist Stafford James and drummer Louis Hayes frequently sounds exuberant on these lengthy performances; all ten songs are at least 11 minutes long. The excitement of the period can definitely be felt in this excellent music.

     Label: Blue Note
     Format: MP3 @320kbps
     Size: 128mb (RS.com)
     AMG: 4 star

Dexter Gordon meets up with vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, pianist Barry Harris, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and drummer Billy Higgins on this excellent hard bop date. Recorded during one of the great tenor's infrequent U.S. visits (he had moved to Europe in 1962), Gordon is in excellent form on six diverse selections that range from "Manha de Carnaval" and "Shiny Stockings" to "Heartaches" and Gordon's original "Le Coiffeur." Although underrated during this era due to his residence in Europe, Gordon was at the peak of his powers throughout this period; all of his Blue Note releases are easily recommended. - Allmusic.com

Goin' Out of My Head was actually Wes' fourth recording for Verve. The previous three, Movin' Wes (Nov 64), Bumpin' (May 65) and Smokin' at the Half Note (June/Sept 65) were recorded in rapid succession and the two albums were on general release at the time of Goin' Out of My Head sessions. Movin' Wes and Bumpin' had already been, by jazz sales standards, significant successes.

Albert King - Born Under a Bad Sign (1967)
     Artist: Albert King
Album: Born Under a Bad Sign
     Year: 1967
     Label: Mobile Fidelity
     Format: MP3 @320kbps
     Size: 70mb (RS.com)

Born Under a Bad Sign dates back to a time when albums were collections of singles, and when singles, designed for radio and jukebox play, seldom ran more than three and a half minutes. That limitation meant that artists had to make an impact quickly and firmly. In blues, the tendency of songs to go on a bit had to be curbed to produce performances with punch and point. There are few better examples of this process in action than Albert King's 1960s tracks like "Crosscut Saw," "Born Under a Bad Sign," and his story of hot whispers during the hot-wash cycle, "Laundromat Blues." With his thick voice and no-nonsense guitar, King brought absolute blues credibility to the well-made commercial single, and even tracks that were recorded purely for the album, like the aching slow blues "As the Years Go Passing By," became classics. Reissued with the original funky cover art, Born Under a Bad Sign is one of the foundation stones of a blues collection. - Amazon.com[/center]

Yusef Lateef's Detroit (1969)

     AMG Rating: 4 stars

After issuing the spiritually compelling and contemplatively swinging Complete Yusef Lateef in 1967, Dr. Yusef Lateef's sophomore effort for Atlantic shifted gears entirely. Lateef chose his old stomping grounds of Detroit for an evocative musical study of the landscape, people, and spirit and terrain. Lateef spent the late-'50s in the city recording for Savoy, and this recording captures the memory of a great city before it was torn apart by racial strife and economic inequality in 1967. There is no way to make a record that suggests Detroit without rhythm, and Lateef employs plenty of it here in his choice of musicians: conga players Ray Barretto and Norman Pride; Tootie Heath on percussion; Cecil McBee, Roy Brooks, and Bernard Purdie; electric bassist Chuck Rainey; electric guitarist Eric Gale; pianist Hugh Lawson; and a string quartet that included Kermit Moore...

Wayne Shorter - High Life (1995)
Artist: Wayne Shorter
Album: High Life
Year: 1995
Label: Verve
Format: MP3 @128kbps Size: 50mb (RS.com)
AMG Rating: 4 star

Wayne Shorter's debut for Verve was his first release as a leader in quite a long time and his most rewarding recording since the prime years of Weather Report, 15 years before. Shorter and keyboardist Rachel Z spent a year working on developing and orchestrating his ideas and the results are these nine originals. Although use was made of orchestral horns and strings, most of the backing in these often-dense ensembles is by a standard rhythm section (which includes Marcus Miller on electric bass and bass clarinet) and Rachel Z's synthesizers. The pieces set moods rather than state singable melodies, are not afraid to utilize electronic rhythms now and then in an unpredictable fashion, and are both intelligent and largely danceable. However, Shorter's playing (not only on soprano and tenor but a bit of alto and baritone) is always distinctive and he sounds very much as if he is pushing himself. In fact, his emotional statements and the complexity of the ensembles push this music way above virtually all of the so-called "contemporary jazz" (which is often merely a synonym for jazzy pop) into the idiom of creative music. It helps for listeners to have a liking for the sound of Weather Report (even though this group is not a copy), but even Shorter's older fans will find his playing here to be quite stimulating. - Allmusic.com
