      Хочу представить вниманию клуба интересную работу группы, носящей имя своего фронт-мена и работающей в постоянном составе более 15 лет (я не говорю о приглашаемых музыкантах). Этот альбом, как, впрочем и остальные, крепок, основателен и обладает притягательностью, а тексты заслуживают отдельного внимания (одна лишь первая, "Survivor" чего стоит: "...You take a little schoolboy and teach him who to hate/ then you send him to the desert for the oil near Kuwait...").

      This Columbia Legacy reissue of the 1965 release is one of the few recordings available of one of the blues' founding fathers. It contains some of his best songs, which have unsurprisingly become classics of the Delta blues genre: "Death Letter," "Preachin' Blues," "Levee Camp Moan," "Pony Blues," and "Downhearted Blues" are all here. Though not as comprehensive as Father of the Delta Blues: The Complete 1965 Sessions, this CD is an excellent introduction to this seminal artist's work, revealing the creativity, passion, skillful guitar playing, and rich singing that helped form a whole new kind of music. --Genevieve Williams (Amazon.com)

This recording, whose music has been reissued as part of a Mosaic Jackie McLean box set, has several selections that are quite fascinating. McLean (along with trumpeter Charles Tolliver, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Billy Higgins) plays free hard bop on "Action" (which does not have a specific set of chord changes to follow), a pair of Tolliver compositions ("Plight" being the most well known) and even the standard "I Hear a Rhapsody" (McLean's feature). Only the bluesy "Hootnan" is a bit more conventional, although the solos are far from predictable. This album is full of exciting music that has long been overshadowed. - Allmusic.com

      A wonderful return ot the sounds of Brazil for Stan Getz -- a 70s album that reunites him with Joao Gilberto, but in a style that's somewhat different than the pair's older Verve recordings! The sound here is looser, freer -- more in that breezy Brazilian mode that evolved out of the initial bossa years -- and Stan's tenor sounds great in the setting, with those loose yet heartfelt lines we love so much from this period! Joao's great too -- somehow even more "present" on the record than before, with that amazing ability to do so much with so little -- as on some of his own great 70s recordings. Miucha contributes some English language vocals to the record alongside Joao's Portuguese ones, and Oscar Castro Neves handled the arrangements with a nicely stripped-down style that has plenty of focus on the percussion and rhythms. Titles include a sublime English language version of "Aqua De Marco (Waters Of March)", plus the tracks "Double Rainbow", "Falsa Bahiana", "Ligia", "Izaura", "Eu Vim Da Bahia", and "E Preciso Perdoar".

      This excellent sextet album, recorded in Italy in 1962, features Chet with legendary Belgian musicians Bobby Jasper on tenor sax and flute and Rene Thomas on guitar. They blow beautifully on standards as well as tunes by Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins and Oscar Pettiford.

      It's amazing how each song highlights each one of the foursome's strong points. This CD really made me stand up and listen. The CD opens with "Silver Stallion" and one cannot help but think of bygone cowboy days. Waylon Jennings transforms "Angels Love Bad Men" into one of his trademark wicked songs. Reminds you of the "Waylon and Willie days" when everybody wanted to be an outlaw. This album would get five stars if it had included their version of "Help Me Make it Through the Night" (a danceable form of the famous Kristoferson tune). And, it's nice to know that Johnny Cash sounds as good as ever.

      The myth of the American West--lawless lands, resolute heroes--takes on a grave, elegiac quality on this first, and best, collaboration from Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson. There's little bravado here, just a sense of ticking time, of frontiers lost, cowboys singing their last songs. In the end, Highwayman works because it fuses mythic, serious material with the artists' own legendary personas and well-aged voices.

The all-star lineup on Drum Suite gives the album high marks before one note of music is played. It's a piece of history. Released in 1957, the album merged Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers with several other musical forces that proved fruitful, rhythmically and otherwise. As a leader, Blakey gave the world soulful hard bop jazz to remember. “Nica's Tempo,” for example, begins with his drum solo and transitions into a beautiful uptempo drive that remains propelled by sparks of “electricity.” There was always a vibrant force behind his projects. - allaboutjazz.com

     One of the many "best of Jimmy Reed" albums released over the years, Guitar, Harmonica & Feeling is a 27-song CD that the European independent Saar put out in 1990. Liner notes are thin, but recording dates and personnel are all included. The sound quality is good, and the material itself is nothing to complain about. Laidback hits like "Baby, What You Want Me to Do," "Big Boss Man," "Honest I Do" and "Take Out Some Insurance" are included along with some enjoyable rarities, including the playful "Sugar, Sugar". There's also the infectious "Ain't That Loving You Baby" and of course, "Bright Lights, Big City". These 27 songs certainly are a good introduction to Reed's legacy, and a bluesman of his magnitude is well-served by this compilation.

     This excellent Columbia album was recorded less than a year after Dexter Gordon s well-publicized tour of the United States following a dozen years spent living in Europe. With assistance from such other major players as trumpeters Woody Shaw and Benny Bailey vibraphonist Bobby Gordon sounds in superlative form on Woody Shaw s "The Moontrame," four standards and his own "Fried Bananas." In addition to the original program (which features Dexter with an all-star tentet), the 1997 CD reissue adds two 1979 features for vocalese singer Eddie Jefferson ("Diggin' It" and "It's Only a Paper Moon") which were originally released on Gordon's Great Encounters trumpeter Shaw and trombonist Curtis Fuller co-star with Gordon An excellent acquisition. -- Allmusic.com
