     Quality - MP3@192kbps (LP-rip)

A hip piano trio from the Argentine scene of the 60s -- led by pianist Ruben Lopez Furst, and coming across with a groove that's somewhere between the best of Bill Evans, and some of the better trio sounds of the European scene of the time! Ruben's got a touch on the keys that's always warmly melodic, and often nicely sensitive without being too gentle -- a mix that works well on the better groovers here, which almost remind us of some of the best Saba/MPS trio numbers from the 60s. The trio features Jorge Gonzalez on bass and Nestor Astarita on drums -- plus a bit of guest tenor from Ruben Barbieri and trumpet from Jorge Anders on a few tracks. The set features two full albums from the 60s, Jazz En La Universidad and Jazz Argentino -- and titles include "Los Viejos", "Israel", "Sometime Ago", "Cartas De Amor", "Stella By Starlight", "Un Poco Alegre", "Beautiful Love", and "I'll Need Another One".

John Scofield - Blue Matter (1986)

     Time: 42:37
     Format: MP3 @320kbps

     AMG Rating: 4 stars

One of the top jazz guitarists from the mid-1980s on, John Scofield has always had a very recognizable sound and the ability to combine together R&B/funk with advanced jazz. He is the lead voice throughout most of this release, performing eight of his originals with a group also including keyboardist Mitchel Forman, electric bassist Gary Grainger, drummer Dennis Chambers, percussionist Don Alias and (on three of the numbers) Hiram Bullock on rhythm guitar. Although not for jazz purists, who should get his slightly later Blue Note releases instead, this set should interest guitar freaks. -- AMG

Louis Smith - Here Comes Louis Smith (1957)
     Artist: Louis Smith
     Album: Here Comes Louis Smith
     Year: 1957
     Label: Blue Note
     Format: MP3 @320 kbps
     Size: 89 mb (RS.com, w/ 5% file recovery)
     Includes Covers + Scans
     AMG Rating: 4½ stars

Louis Smith had a brilliant debut on this Blue Note album, his first of two before becoming a full- time teacher. The opener (Duke Pearson's "Tribute to Brownie") was a perfect piece for Smith to interpret, since his style was heavily influenced by Clifford Brown (who had died the previous year). He is also in excellent form on four of his basic originals and takes a particularly memorable solo on a haunting rendition of "Stardust." Altoist Cannonball Adderley (who used the pseudonym of Buckshot La Funke on this set, a name later used by Branford Marsalis), Duke Jordan or Tommy Flanagan on piano, bassist Doug Watkins, and drummer Art Taylor make for a potent supporting cast, but the focus is mostly on the criminally obscure Louis Smith. After cutting his second Blue Note set and switching to teaching, Smith would not record again as a leader until 1978. All bop and 1950s jazz fans are strongly advised to pick up this CD reissue before it disappears. - AMG

No matter who backed him up, Miles always played in his own way and one could always tell it was him.The trio of songs that begin the album-the tital cut,"Robot 415" and "Code M.D." are pulsing electro-funk hip/hop numbers that stand as the beginnings of jazz-hop and are therefore a precurser to what Gang Starr and Digable planets would be doing a decade later."What Is It" and "That's What Happened" are organic,white-hot,live-in-the-studio jams where Miles blows like a siren. The moody "Freaky Deaky" and "That's Right" add enough change of pace to make this one of Mile's better 80's albums by far! - Amazon.com reviewer

Hank Mobley and His All Stars (1957)     Artist: Hank Mobley
Album: Hank Mobley and His All Stars
     Label: Blue Note
     Year: 1957, release 2005
     Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbit/s
     Time: 0.38:40
     Size: 89 MB
     AMG rating: 4 stars

This CD is a straight reissue of a Hank Mobley LP that features the "Who's Who" of late-'50s hard bop: the tenor-leader, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianist Horace Silver, bassist Doug Watkins and drummer Art Blakey. The quintet performs five Mobley compositions (best is the lyrical "Mobley's Musings"), songs that are generally more interesting for their chord changes than for their melodies, which is probably why none of them became standards. One's attention is constantly drawn to the inventive solos and Art Blakey's roaring "accompaniment." An above-average effort from some of the best. -- Review by Scott Yanow, AMG.
