     Review:
Pianist Junior Mance has long been typecast as a soulful blues player so, as if to confuse listeners, he starts off this live set with an uptempo "Looptown" on which he displays technique worthy of Oscar Peterson. Mance's many fans have no reason to despair though for, in addition to a boppish rendition of "Girl of My Dreams," the pianist does perform a generous amount of blues and soulful pieces. Bassist Larry Gales and drummer Ben Riley alsohelp out . ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Junior Mance is well-known for his soulful bluesy style, but he is also expert at playing bop standards. He started playing professionally when he was ten. Mance worked with Gene Ammons in Chicago during 1947-1949, played with Lester Young (1950), and was with the Ammons-Sonny Stitt group until he was drafted. He was the house pianist at Chicago's Bee Hive (1953-1954), worked as Dinah Washington's accompanist (1954-1955), was in the first Cannonball Adderley Quintet (1956-1957), and then spent two years touring with Dizzy Gillespie (1958-1960). After a few months with the Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis/Johnny Griffin group, Mance formed his own trio and has mostly been a leader ever since. He has led sessions for Verve, Jazzland, Riverside, Capitol, Atlantic, Milestone, Polydor, Inner City, JSP, Nilva, Sackville, and Bee Hive, among other labels. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Barney Wilen - Moshi (1971)
     Artist: Barney Wilen
     Album: Moshi
     Label: SARAVAH
     Issued: 1994 (first issue: 1971)
     Quality: 320 kbps
     Size : 168 Mb (86+82)
AMG Rating: Barney Wilen - Moshi (1971)

A wild and groundbreaking record recorded by the great French tenor player Barney Wilen! Although he got his start as a bebopper in the 50's, Wilen sort of dropped out of sight by the end of the 60's -- and only emerged from time to time to cut strangely experimental sides. This record is unlike anything he ever made, and features a wild mix of African rhythms, ambient sound, and Wilen's deep deep tenor. By this point, Wilen had been absorbing a lot of different influences, from Coltrane, to Pharoah Sanders, to some of the European free players, and his sound is a weird mish mash of styles that weaves in and out of all the stuff on the record. It's a haunting bit of afro jazz and funky noise, with some cuts that are spacey, and others that are nice and funky.

Ella Fitzgerald's Berlin concert of February 13, 1960, highlighted by her ad-lib version of "Mack the Knife," is considered a classic. The performance on this CD dates from the following year and is almost as rewarding. Accompanied by pianist Lou Levy, guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Wilfred Middlebrooks, and drummer Gus Johnson, she sings 18 songs in a varied and well-paced set. Highlights include "Take the 'A' Train," "Anything Goes," "You'll Have to Swing It (Mr. Paganini)," "'Round Midnight," a new (but less humorous) version of "Mack the Knife," and an encore, "This Can't Be Love," that has the singer joined by the Oscar Peterson Trio. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

White was new to contemporary jazz when he released this first recording of his solo career, but his sweet, classical guitar stylings had been sprucing up the work of Al Stewart since the mid-'70s. The man who co-wrote "Time Passages" and sweetened Basia's first two albums with his distinctive string lines entered the pop instrumental field with charming, smooth and melodic songs that launched one of smooth jazz's most prolific and big selling careers. While most of the disc is mellow and soothing, tunes like the rousing, percussive "Festival" and the synth driven "Danny Bianco" (which will remind listeners of Basia's "Run for Cover," and is dedicated to White's brother Danny, Basia's partner) will reveillez-vous (wake up) anyone who forgot to groove during the first few songs. While parts of tunes like the title track get a bit repetitive in spots, White's fluid passions on gems like "If Only for You" and the midtempo "Crazy Feeling" more than compensate. There's also an above average vocal by Windows' Skipper Wise on "Play Your Guitar for Me," some very inventive production and a tender solo instrumental reading of Buddy Holly's classic "Everyday." Dave Camp's flute adds a touch of whimsy to the proceedings. When first hearing this release, you might predict a long and rewarding career in the genre, and this was borne out by numerous classics to follow. ~ Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide

Richard Elliot's most anticipated record in years could be something of an enigma to his die-hard fans. There's no doubt all of them will come to the consensus that this is his most well-rounded disc in maybe a decade.
