      Слушаешь, ничего не понятно, но завораживает. Снова ставишь, и все по новой. Получилось так, что по тому как часто звучал этот альбом выходило – это самая любимая пластинка, хотя признаваться себе в этом – никогда!

      Soulive is a jazz trio that originated in Woodstock, New York, and is known for its ripping solos and catchy, upbeat songs. The band consists of Eric Krasno (guitar), Alan Evans (drums), and Neal Evans (Hammond B3 organ, bass keys, clavinet). Although they originated as a trio, the band worked extensively with different horn sections, which consisted of Sam Kininger (saxophone) from 2000-2003, and Rashawn Ross (trumpet) and Ryan Zoidis (saxophone) from 2003-2006. The band also worked with vocalist Toussaint Yeshua from 2006-2007. Soulive is currently touring in the original trio lineup of Eric Krasno, Alan Evans, and Neal Evans.

The words and beats are crucial to the power of Bob Marley's songs. When Hunter turns "Lively Up Yourself" and "Bend Down Low" from his Natty Dread into soul-jazz, organ-combo shuffles or "Dem Belly Full" into a Latin-jazz blowing session, he divorces them so completely from the originals that they lose their connection to Marley. They become generic '50s jazz tunes, and Hunter's quartet isn't good enough to make such material sound special. Not a single tune features a real reggae rhythm, and instead of making the tunes richer, the rearrangements make them blander. The album's one special moment comes on an imaginative interpretation of "No Woman, No Cry." It begins with a solo guitar rendition of "The Tennessee Waltz," which segues smoothly into a glowing, understated version of the Marley ballad. --Geoffrey Himes

Veteran altoist Jackie McLean is in top form on this live quartet session with pianist Hotep Idris Galeta, bassist Nat Reeves and drummer Carl Allen. He performs two originals by Galeta, René McLean's "Dance Little Mandissa," "'Round Midnight," and his own "Minor March" and "Five." The amount of passion and intensity that McLean puts into his improvisations is quite impressive, and 40 years after his recording debut, he remains in prime form. This strong, advanced hard bop date gives listeners a good example of his abilities. -- AMG

     The sessions that comprise the 14-track Standards were recorded by Sonny Clark at the end of 1958, with the intention that his interpretations would be issued as 45-rpm singles. His takes on these 12 standards (two of the tracks are alternate takes) are exceptional. Supported by drummer Wes Landers and, on varying dates, either Paul Chambers or Jymie Merritt on bass, Clark turns in lyrical, sensitive renditions of "Dancing In the Dark," "All of You," "I Cover the Waterfront," "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," "Black Velvet" and "I'm Just a Lucky So And So," among others. Although some of the performances are a little brief, limiting his opportunity to solo, Standards is a lovely collection of beautiful music that's a welcome addition to Clark's catalog. -- Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMG.
