     One of the finest European jazz pianists of all time, Martial Solal (a unique stylist) has never received as much recognition in the U.S. as he deserves. Born in Algiers to French parents, Solal has been based in Paris since the late '40s. Although a modernist, he was flexible enough to record an album with Sidney Bechet in 1957 and make other records with Django Reinhardt, Don Byas, and Lucky Thompson.      On paper, this recording shouldn’t work. There’s no bass player or drummer, the two musicians have two very different styles, one is a U.S. musician and the other is European. They don’t perform together that often, crossing paths only occasionally, sometimes in Europe, sometimes in the U.S. But on the concert stage, this live recording becomes the sum of two parts. Both musicians deconstruct each tune and then reconstruct them, listening to one another and finding ways to complement each other. There are no hidden agendas here. The musicians aren’t competing with one another to see who can play faster, more notes or swing harder. The listener hears that these two giants are beyond that type of playing. It’s obvious that they’re both interested in creating melodies that make musical sense but, in addition, playing in a way that also stretches the envelop and adds a sense of adventure and playfulness to the music.

     I personally believe that Lucky Peterson is one of the major stars in the Soul-Blues business. Double Dealin' is a great CD that, from my point of view, proves it beyond any doubts. From the opening guitar driven title track to the end, this collection shows the immense talent of Mr. Peterson: great organ player, great guitarist and least but not last great singer too!

      Shorty is one of those artists who has never received his due. The fact that he influenced both the great Buddy Guy and Jimi Hendrix is almost beside the point. He is an uncommonly good blues guitarist in his own right and a powerful vocalist to boot. Roll Over, Baby is full of memorable sides like the slightly risque title cut, a nostalgic lover's plea. Shorty also does a fine "Hey Joe" a la Hendrix, yet firmly imprints it with his own stamp. And when Shorty says "Don't Mess with My Woman," you'd better listen. His biting guitar is reminiscent of the late Albert King with a little Clapton thrown in. Pick up this disc and you too will wonder why this master has been overlooked.
