     A somewhat obscure date from guitarist Jim Hall, the second of his mid 70s releases on the short-lived Horizon label, the other a trio date entitled “Live!”. On this recording he uses various duo, trio and quintet combinations of the musicians involved. This recording was released shortly before the Horizon label folded, so it didn’t get the promotion it deserved. It was out of print until it was released in Japan a few years ago in a limited run. The original Lp included a gatefold cover and a multi page booklet that included liner notes, interviews, a discography, a lead sheet for Walk Soft and a transcription of Jim’s solo on Indian Summer. I remember hearing that originally the title was going to be “Jim Hall and Friends” and that’s just what this recording is, Jim inviting some of his friends into the studio and making great music. As always, I’m interested in what others think of this recording.

      This is one of the best Cd’s Charlie Haden with Jan Garbarek and Egberto Gismonti has dropped to date. After seeing Folk Song, I had to have a good Charlie Haden with Jan Garbarek and Egberto Gismonti cd. This seven-song debut EP shows the promise that Charlie Haden with Jan Garbarek and Egberto Gismonti has. Charlie Haden with Jan Garbarek and Egberto Gismonti ”Folk Songs” is an amazing album.
      Bodas De Prata has a gorgeous instrumental sound, which lets Charlie Haden with Jan Garbarek and Egberto Gismonti’s strong vocals come to the fore. Cego Aderaldo - Well, here we get a bit more meaning. Veien is possibly the most mysterious and inexplicable track Charlie Haden with Jan Garbarek and Egberto Gismonti ever produced. Equilibrista marked the continuation of Charlie Haden with Jan Garbarek and Egberto Gismonti in style evolution. For Turiya is the more seemingly obscure song on Folk Songs that bear up best to repeated listening.

      The performances on this Galaxy LP are essentially outtakes and leftovers from Art Pepper's 1979 sessions for Artists House. However, the quality is quite high, making one wonder why this material was not released until 1984. "Body and Soul" and "You Go to My Head" are particularly special, for they are unaccompanied alto solos, and on "Anthropology," Pepper has a rare outing on clarinet. The remaining numbers — "Desafinado," "Donna Lee" and "Blues for Blanche" — feature the great altoist with pianist George Cables, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Billy Higgins. All of the highly enjoyable and bop-based but explorative music has since been reissued on CD in Pepper's 16-CD Galaxy box set. --AMG

      Ох, что сделал со мной Мингус этой музыкой в своё время! Далеко не все признанные джазовые шедевры вообще как-то волновали моё воображение, но этот... Он кидал меня на самое дно, а потом подбрасывал в поднебесную. Он носил меня по раскалённой от жары Москве и накрывал льдом у холодного Байкала. Он заставлял меня бояться до невозможности вымолвить слово и давал ощущение бессмертия. Я сражался со своими демонами под эту музыку и многих из них я одолел. Всё моё нутро кипело и стонало одновременно... И по сей день только пара альбомов Колтрейна действуют на меня похоже. Black Saint... это, как мне кажется уже не джаз. Это настолько немыслимое, от чего перехватывает дыхание... Верю, что я не одинок в том, что чувствую.
