Brad Mehldau - Largo |

Artist - Brad Mehldau Album - Largo Label - Warner Bros. Records Year - 2002 Quality - MP3@256 kbps Size: 65,0+59,0 mb Total time - 64:09 Having essayed "the art of the trio" on several albums boasting that same tag, pianist Brad Mehldau opens up his style here to embrace horns and strings, electronics and robo-beats. Produced by popmeister Jon Brion (Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple), whom he hooked up with at the Largo nightclub in Los Angeles, Largo the CD is thick with atmosphere: titles such as "When It Rains" shouldn't be taken lightly. But its studied romanticism, while cutting back on the pianistic posturing that has turned off some jazz critics on Mehldau (while intensifying the devotion of others), is ultimately thin in substance. At its best, as on the freewheeling "Paranoid Android," the music attains a kind of hermetic intensity. At other times, it recalls the acoustic experimentation of Medeski Martin & Wood with its decorative grooves and empty claims on free expression. Cocktail music is but a few degrees of banality away, which, depending on your taste, is either reason to stay away or reason to make Mehldau even more of a hot property. -- Lloyd Sachs |

Blue Mitchell - Complete Blue Mitchell Blue Note Sessions 1963-1967 |

Artist: Blue Mitchell Album: The Complete Blue Mitchell Blue Note Sessions 1963-1967 - 4CDs Year: 1963 Label: Mosaic MD4-178 (4 Discs) Time: 4 hours, 6 minutes, 31 seconds Format: MP3 @320kbps Size: 683.6mb (RS.com, with 5% WinRar File Recovery) Includes Covers + Scans + 16-page PDF Booklet AMG Rating: Blue Mitchell was always a consistent, lyrical, and pleasing trumpeter. Although not as significant during the 1960s as Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard (much less Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis), Mitchell had his own appealing sound and was a major asset on many modern mainstream dates. This four-CD limited-edition Mosaic box set collects Mitchell's first six Blue Note dates as a leader: Step Lightly, The Thing to Do, Down With It, Bring It Home to Me, Boss Horn, and Heads Up. Three albums are by his quintet, which included tenor saxophonist Junior Cook and usually the young pianist Chick Corea and was formed shortly after he left Horace Silver, and the three others are with larger groups, two of which have arrangements by Duke Pearson. Among the other key sidemen are tenor great Joe Henderson, altoist Leo Wright, baritonist Pepper Adams, and pianists Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner. There are just two previously unreleased cuts (both alternate takes), but most of the sets have been somewhat rare for years, and taken as a whole, the swinging hard bop and boogaloo performances are Blue Mitchell's finest recordings. -- AMG |

Keith Jarrett - Birth |

Artist - Keith JarrettAlbum - BirthLabel - Wounded Bird Records Year - 1971 Quality - MP3@320kbps Size - 94,2mb Total time - 45:33 Pianist Keith Jarrett's sessions of July 1971 resulted in three LPs and the birth of his finest group: a quartet (and sometimes quintet) with tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Paul Motian. This particular album has some eccentric moments, with Jarrett switching to soprano on the effective "Mortgage on My Soul" and making appearances on steel drum, recorder, and banjo (in addition to piano) on two adventurous pieces. Redman is featured on Chinese musette during "Spirit" (which has Haden on conga and steel drums) and also plays some clarinet in addition to his usual tenor. Not everything works, and there are some wandering moments, but the music always holds one's interest; one can easily see the potential that would soon be realized by this intriguing ensemble. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
