Artists: Various Album: Harley Davidson Roadhouse Blues Label: The Right Stuff Year: 2003 Genre: Blues Tracks: 17 Format: mp3, Bitrate: @ CBR 224 Size: 58 MB + 57 MB If you like the blues as I do (all kinds of blues), then you'll want to add this to your collection. From the soulful sounds of Susan Tedeschi and Lonnie Brooks to the fast paced "honky tonk" style (ala Delbert McClinton) of George Thorogood and Son Seals, you'll get a taste of the blues at its best! Stanley Turrentine - The Best of the Blue Note Years |

Artist: Stanley Turrentine Album: The Best of the Blue Note Years Label: Blue Note Recording Date: Jun 18, 1960-Dec 7, 1984, release 1989 Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbps (+ covers) Time: 32:56 Stanley Turrentine has been called the only Texas tenor player to come out of Pittsburgh. Indeed, he does have that wonderful paradoxical rich Texas sound (a hard shell with a soft center) and a style which balances bluesy nastiness with lyrical vulnerability. Born in Pittsburgh on April 5, 1934, Stanley developed tbat sound in the early fifties on endless road tours with the Ray Charles and Earl Bostic bands. In 1959, he and his brother trumpeter Tommy were discovered by the jazz world when Max Roach brought them into his pianoless quintet. That same year, he participated in Jimmy Smith's classic MIDNIGHT SPECiAL BACK AT THE CHICKEN SHACK session. Within a year, Stanley signed with Blue Note and stayed with the label for 10 years, recording albums of artistic and commercial merit in a wide variety of settings. These are his best songs... "Smiley Stacy" swings as hell, in my opinion! Listen to this one first :-) |

Stanley Turrentine - Joyride (RVG-edition) |
Hard-bop, Soul |
Artist: Stanley Turrentine Album: Joyride Label: Blue Note Size: 106 mb Year: 1965 Quality: 320 kbps + covers With a rhythm section of Kenny Burrell, Herbie Hancock, Bob Cranshaw, and Grady Tate and a first class orchestra assembled and arranged by Oliver Nelson, tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine made a career-defining masterpiece with this 1965 classic. From early R&B classics like Percy Mayfield’s ”River’s Invitation” and Buddy Johnson’s ”I Wonder Where Our Love Has Gone” to Turrentine’s ”Little Sheri” and Jimmy Smith’s ”Bayou,” this album is perfect from start to finish. Two bonus tracks from the session, Lou Donaldson’s ”Gravy Train” and Jack McDuff’s ”A Kettle of Fish,” have been added to the original LP. |

Gene Ammons - Goodbye (1974) |

Artist: Gene Ammons Album: Goodbye Label: Original Jazz Classics Year: 1974 Format: MP3 192 kbps & 320 kbps Size: 55 mb (192 kbps) or 89 MB, inc. covers (320 kbps) AMG Rating: BBC Review: Even when it was first released in 1974, this album was an anachronism. The opening track, "Sticks", sounds as if it comes from a late-50s Horace Silver session with Blue Mitchell & Junior Cook. This definitive take on funky, foot-tapping soul-jazz sets the tone for the album. Ammons is joined by a fine bunch of like-minded players - Nat Adderley on cornet, Kenny Drew on piano, Sam Jones on bass, Louis Hayes on drums, Ray Barretto on congas and Gary Bartz on alto sax. They share his straightahead attitude; for all of them, the watchwords were swing, melody and emotion. The only slight exception is the younger Bartz, whose soloing sounds as if he's toeing the line and keeping himself in check, rather than cutting loose into freer territory. Benny Golson - Groovin' With Golson (1959) |

Artist: Benny Golson Album: Groovin' With Golson Year: 1959 Label: New Jazz/OJC Time: 34:01 Format: MP3@320 kbps Size: 82 mb (RS.com, with 5% file recovery) Includes Covers + Scans This is one of at least four recordings that matched up tenor saxophonist Benny Golson and trombonist Curtis Fuller prior to the formation of the Jazztet; ironically, Fuller only stuck around for one Jazztet record before departing. Reissued on CD, the LP-length program has two lesser-known Golson compositions along with "Drum Boogie," "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," and "Yesterdays." Three of the tunes are blues, and the two ballads are taken at a medium- tempo pace. With pianist Ray Bryant, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Blakey forming a solid rhythm section, the hard bop music does indeed groove in its own fashion. -- AMG |

Tito Puente - Puente Goes Jazz (1956) |
Music » Jazz » Latin |
Artist: Tito Puente Album: Puente Goes Jazz Label: RCA Year: 1956 Quality: FLAC Size: 208 MB Time: 37:14 One of Tito Puente's earliest jazz-oriented dates, this set (reissued on a 1993 Bluebird CD) matches Puente (doubling on vibes and timbales) with a big band and the bongos of William Correa. The music (mostly obscure originals plus three standards) swings, and although none of the sidemen became household names, (best-known is altoist Dave Schildkraut), the musicianship is fine. Actually, more notable than the fairly conventional music are two of the song titles: "Tiny Not Ghengis (Kahn)" and "That's A Puente!" -- Review by Scott Yanow, AMG. |
