Compact Jazz: Best of Dixieland     Artist: Various Artists
Album: Compact Jazz: Best of Dixieland
     Label: Verve
     Orig Year: 1955 - 1974, release 1987
     Type: Compilation
     Mono/Stereo: Stereo
     Format/Bitrate: MP3/320 kbit/s
     Size: 75 + 71 MB
     Total time: 61:22

In the 1940s, when blistering bebop scorched the American musical earth, traditional jazz was shunted to the sidelines, its players and fans scornfully dubbed "moldy figs." But "Dixieland", in its purest form the cornerstone of jazz, carried on and, indeed, experienced something of a revival on both sides of the Atlantic in the 1950s and early '60s. this set includes some of America's legends of classic jazz - Louis Armstrong, Jack Teagarden, Red Allen, Kid Ory, and George Lewis - plus two outstanding New Orleans ensembles, The Original Tuxedo "Jass" Band and Dejan's Original Olympia Brass Band. Eddie Condon, trad jazz's chief advocate, leads a group of all-stars who cut their teeth on the sounds of New Orleans; Condon's longtime associate Max Kaminsky does likewise. Rounding out these high-spirited proceedings are some of Great Britain's leading revivalists - Ken Colyer, Alex Welsh, Monty Sunshine, Mr. Acker Bilk, Terry Lightfoot, Chris Barber, and Humphrey Lyttelton. They carried teh classic jazz torch to the British pop charts just before the Beatles exploded. - www.vervemusicgroup.com.

Una de las mejores recopilaciones de revival que he escuchado.
Incluye artitas como: Kid Ory's Creole Jazz Band; George Lewis And His Band; Louis Armstrong & All His Stars; Henri Red Allen Orchestra; Max Kaminsky & his All Star Dixieland Band; Eddie Condon And His Boys; Jack Teagarden and his sextet... Excelente calidad de sonido.

Lee Morgan - The Rumproller (1965)     Artist: Lee Morgan

     Label: Blue Note (RVG-edition)
     Year : 1965
     Quality: MP3@320 kbps/FLAC
     Size: 68,2+67,9 Mb/263 Mb
     Total Time : 47:56

To follow up on his unexpected boogaloo hit "The Sidewinder," Lee Morgan recorded Andrew Hill's somewhat similar "The Rumproller" but this time the commercial magic was not there. However the trumpeter, tenor-saxophonist Joe Henderson, pianist Ronnie Mathews, bassist Victor Sproles and drummer Billy Higgins all play quite well on the title cut, two of Morgan's songs (the bossa nova "Eclipso" is somewhat memorable), a ballad tribute to Billie Holiday and Wayne Shorter's "Edda." This album is worth picking up but it is not essential. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Takis Barberis - Naiva     Artist: Takis Barberis

     Genre: ethno jazz

'Naiva' is Takis Barberis' fourth personal album and charters him as one of the most earnest and aspiring new composers in Greece. This very album is an affirmation of Barberis' vested belief in the universality of sounds that are embedded in traditional and contemporary music. "the most profound of my desires", Barberis says, "is to turn into sounds and music all those personal and cultural experiences that have been following me. Yet as desires might get trapped to the names we give to categories of styles, music genres or the austerity of music idioms, what really counts is the truth that sounds contain, the space we open up for those sounds to exist, to freely move across boundaries and utter every single time something new and meaningful". Naiva is a made up word. It ascribes to a name of a girl, (Greek or Indian by the very same token). It is a play on the open meaning of Naive and Nativus that might mean simple or even artless innocent as well as unsophisticated ungraceful, perhaps, or unassuming for that matter. Barberis' affirmation also helps explain the difficulty to term the music of Naiva as jazz, ethnic fusion or all of the above. More than such a categorisation Naiva is a play on the clarity of sounds and the flowing of melodies. Already in his last album EPISODES (LYRA 0177) Barberis had demonstrated his unique ability to combine as diverse sounds as those of the renowned Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu, with those of the folk master of the clarinet Petros Lucas Halkias creating an entire landscape of music atmospheres and tints. In Naiva, Barberis further articulates such a music language with more eloquence and an even greater fluidity. In all such fluidity of meaning, the only constant point of departure is Takis wandering anew to the infinite universe of interwoven sounds of the world. The sounds and resonance of Naiva make up a universal music language free of any need forgeographical specificity. - www.cromozone.de/barberis/

     Size - 95 & 62 MB (incl. covers)

     AMG rating: ****

Alan Broadbent has long been appreciated as a fine pianist and arranger, talents he combines on this studio effort with bassist Brian Bromberg and drummer Kendall Kay, along with background color by the Tokyo Strings. "Autumn Variations" is a superb workout of the chord changes to the standard "Autumn Leaves." The pianist's lyrical setting of the longing ballad "Bess, Oh Where's My Bess" and the sparse treatment of "Last Night When We Were Young" are simply masterful. Broadbent's scoring of notable jazz compositions proves to be equally effective. He sets up a very deliberate tempo for the ballad "Lover Man," alternating the piano and the strings in the foreground as the rhythm section plays sparingly. But his best effort may be his lush arrangement of the modal masterpiece "Blue in Green." Broadbent also includes three strong originals: "E. 32nd Elegy" (a moody tribute to Lennie Tristano), the breezy Latin-flavored "Nirvana Blues," and an affectionate ballad salute to his late boss Woody Herman called "Woody 'N' Me," which suggests the end of another long night as the weary musicians pile into the bus to hit the road to the next gig.
Impeccably recorded and mixed, Alan Broadbent's Every Time I Think of You is the perfect CD for unwinding at the end of a long, demanding day. [AMG-Review by Ken Dryden]

REPOST

Strictly for completists, this Storyville CD has 25 performances but just ten separate songs; 15 are alternate takes. Slightly more complete than an Affinity box set that covered the 1940 selections, this release surprisingly leaves out one version of "Loveless Love."
The music, particularly the originally released versions, is excellent; Lady Day is in fine form, and there are some solos from trumpeter Roy Eldridge, Benny Carter (on clarinet), tenorman Georgie Auld, pianist Teddy Wilson and (on the final session) tenor saxophonist Lester Young. Among the tunes are "I Hear Music," "St. Louis Blues," "Let's Do It" and "Romance in the Dark." Most collectors would be satisfied with just having the regular versions, but one can appreciate slight differences in each rendition, particularly from the soloists. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
