1959: Kenny Burrell with Art Blakey - On View At The Five Spot Cafe |
Hard-bop, Blakey Art |
 |
 |
Artist: Kenny Burrell Album: On View At The Five Spot Cafe Year: 1959 Label: Blue Note Time: 63:40 Format: MP3 @320kbps Size: 161mb (RS.com, with 5% file recovery) Includes Covers + Scans AMG Rating: 4 stars This likable live set from guitarist Kenny Burrell has a strong supporting cast ( Tina Brooks on tenor, either Bobby Timmons or Roland Hanna on piano, bassist Ben Tucker, and drummer Art Blakey) and the original five-song program has been expanded on this CD to eight tunes. The swinging music, highlighted by "Lady Be Good," "Birks Works," the blues "36-23-36," and Burrell's feature on "Lover Man," is quite mainstream for the period and predictably excellent. -- Scott Yanow, AMGREPOST! Kenny Burrell was born today 77 years ago. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! |

Artist: Freddie Hubbard Album: Hub Cap Label: Blue Note Quality: FLAC & MP3@320 Size: 302 MB & 96 MB Time: 42:43 On Hub Cap, his third effort as a leader, Freddie Hubbard sticks to the tried-and-true hard bop formula, which is something of a mixed blessing. There's no question that much of this music is enjoyable, but it's not quite up to the standards of its two predecessors. Part of the problem is Hubbard's sextet, which features tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath, trombonist Julian Priester, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Larry Ridley, and drummer "Philly" Joe Jones. All of the musicians are talented, but only a few are inventive, and that becomes a problem, since it becomes clear that Hubbard is beginning to break free from his influences and develop his own style. In other words, he's capable of more adventurous music than this straight-ahead hard bop. That said, Hub Cap is a very good hard bop date. There is energy to the performances, and the artist's vigorous, inspired playing continues to impress, as do some of his original compositions. Only when compared to Hubbard's first two records, or what would come later, does Hub Cap seem like a lesser effort. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide |

 |
Artist: Lee Morgan Album: Charisma Label: Blue Note Quality: FLAC & MP3@320 Size: 239 MB & 87 MB Time: 39:03 Yet another mid-'60s Blue Note album that makes a coherent artistic statement despite personnel that reads like an all-star blowing date. Jackie McLean (alto), Hank Mobley (tenor) and Cedar Walton (piano) were all bandleaders in their own right; bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Billy Higgins were as in demand as any sidemen of the day (for that matter, Morgan played on countless record dates as a sideman himself, including several of Mobley's sessions). Nevertheless, this sextet hangs together like a veteran unit, playing with wit, fire and enthusiasm throughout. CHARISMA features four of the trumpeter's tunes, all solid, but the two standout cuts are Walton's ballad "Rainy Night" and "Sweet Honey Bee," composed by Blue Note pianist and sometime A&R man Duke Pearson. Morgan lays back and leans forward, stuttering and double-timing his way through the serpentine chord progression of Pearson's tightly-knit, bluesy little gem, while Higgins' creativity provides a shimmering, ever-shifting context for all three soloists. "Rainy Night" lets Morgan stretch out in more of a quartet setting, with Mobley and McLean providing ensemble work on the theme only. |

Artist: Kenny Burrell Album: A Generation Ago Today Label: Verve Quality: FLAC & MP3@320 Size: 170 MB & 78 MB Time: 34:35 REPOST with new links Guitarist Kenny Burrell interprets eight swing standards associated with the Benny Goodman Sextet and Charlie Christian on this Verve album. Burrell is joined by bassist Ron Carter, drummer Grady Tate and either altoist Phil Woods or (on "Wholly Cats") pianist Richard Wyands; vibraphonist Mike Mainieri guests on "As Long as I Live." Unfortunately the playing time of this LP is brief (a touch under 32 minutes) and the now-obscure set has been out-of-print for quite awhile but the music is excellent. Highlights include "Poor Butterfly," "Stompin' at the Savoy," "Rose Room" and "A Smooth One." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Artist: Palmyra & Levita, Joao Donato Album: Here's That Rainy Bossa Day Format: mp3, Bitrate: 320Kbps Size: 103 MB (scans) Year: 2002 Label: Irma Total time: 43:55 Light and lovely work from the team of Palmyra & Levita -- made even better by piano from Joao Donato! Palmyra's a sweet-voiced female vocalist with a style that stretches back to include influences from American torch singers of years past, and some of the warmer voices of the 60s bossa era in Brazil. Levita plays acoustic guitar with a light and jazzy touch -- and works here with some spare but wonderfully effective piano from bossa maestro Joao Donato -- to create a cool and gentle backdrop for the sweet lead vocals in the set. - www. dustygroove.com |

With 1991's You Won't Forget Me, Shirley Horn's star continued to rise. While mostly ballads, this recording also includes swinging takes on "I Just Found Out About Love" and "Foolin' Myself." Toots Thielemans stars with his distinctive harmonica sound on "Beautiful Love" and "Soothe Me," and the unmistakable trumpet of Miles Davis weaves around Horn's vocal on the title track. The opening medley moves from the almost-whispered ballad "The Music That Makes Me Dance," to a funkily midtempo "Come Dance with Me." "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying" is absolutely gorgeous, with Wynton Marsalis stepping in to trade phrases with Horn's voice. The music here is mostly taken at a very leisurely tempo, and the spare arrangements allow plenty of room for the music to breathe, proving that less is often more. The only complaint is that such spaciousness generates is a certain sameness to the material, but this is leavened by the guest appearances of Thielemans, Davis, the brothers Marsalis and tenorman Buck Hill. ~ Jim Newsom, All Music Guide |

Dr. John - In A Sentimental Mood |

Artist: Dr. John Album: In A Sentimental Mood Label: Warner Bros Original Release Date: April 25, 1989 File: MP3, Bit Rate: 320kbps Size: 91.7 MB Total Time: 40:17 On Dr. John's first major-label effort, and first vocal studio album in ten years, he performs a set of pop standards including Cole Porter's "Love for Sale" and Johnny Mercer's "Accentuate the Positive." After starting out with a wild stage act and unusual costumes, Dr. John has evolved into a vocal stylist and piano virtuoso, which makes the idea of doing this sort of material appealing. And he does it well, turning out a leisurely duet with Rickie Lee Jones on "Makin' Whoopee" that won a Grammy (Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Duo or Group), and giving sad feeling to "My Buddy." Maybe he has changed since the Gris Gris days, but even a mellowed Dr. John is a tasty one. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide |

Artist: Gotan Project Album: La Revancha del Tango Label: XL Recordings Original Year: 2003 Genre: Tango, Electronica Format/Bitrate: MP3/320 Size: 100 mb + 22 mb Gotan Project give new meaning to the term French Dance Music with their debut La Revancha Del Tango. A collaboration between soundtrack composers Philippe Cohen Solal and Christophe Mueller and Argentinean guitarist Eduardo Makaroff, the Gotan project project are more about Tangos and accordions than chic disco-house and vocoders. And while the Parisian trio's debut is unlikely to set any superclub dance floors alight, it's unique, bewitching and incredibly French. Part ingenious dance hybrid, part spine-tingling soundtrack, the success of their peculiar mix of strident break-beats, eerie violins and those all-important accordions owes no small debut to Solal & Mueller's cinematic expertise. Exuding enchanting-chilling atmosphere, tracks play out like a sensual score to the nocturnal life of Paris' Latin Quarter. The longing melody of "Queremos Paz" and the jazzy "Last Tango in Paris" are pure romance, and the frantic Latin rhythms of the only real club contender, "Triptico", conjure the hectic café society, but most affecting are the backstreet sleazy of Epoca and swagger of "Chunga's Revenge"; both as hypnotic as they are sinister. Strange amalgams of dub bass and unhinged cabaret vocals add to Gotan Project's allure, but it's the passion and drama that mesmerise, and no dance music has more of both than a Tango. --Dan Gennoe |
