1983: The Stan Getz quartet with Chet Baker - Quintessence. Vol.2 |

 |
Artist: The Stan Getz quartet with Chet Baker Album: Quintessence, Vol. 2 Year: 1983, release 2000 Label: Concord Jazz Genre: Cool Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbit/s Time: 42:48 Size: 102 MB Õîðîøèé àëüáîì. Ê ñîæàëåíèþ òîëüêî âòîðàÿ ÷àñòü. It is my great pleasure to present volume two of "Quintessence," the classic recording of two jazz giants, Stan Getz and Chet Baker, from a concert per¬formed in Norway in 1983. It would be the last known recording of the two of them together; hence it is a jazz treasure of considerable measure. Stan Getz and Chet Baker epitomized cool, vivid storytelling, wit, romance and charm — they were masters of the sacred art of "less is more" in the notes they played and that gorgeous sound in which they played them! My favorite track is "It's You Or No One." |

Artist: Karrin AllysonAlbum: I Didn't Know about YouLabel: Concord Quality: FLAC & MP3@320 Size: 327 MB & 137 MB Time: 61:14 This CD was the debut of the talented singer Karrin Allyson, a creative scat singer also very capable of holding her own on ballads. She primarily utilizes top Kansas City musicians (including pianists Paul Smith, Russ Long and Joe Cartwright, guitarists Danny Embrey and Rod Fleeman, bassists Bob Bowman and Gerald Spaits, drummer Todd Strait, cornetist Gary Sivils and flugelhornist Mike Metheny) on a variety of bop-based material. Among the highlights are "Nature Boy," Karrin's chancetaking duet with drummer Strait on "What A Little Moonlight Can Do," a rapid version of "'S Wonderful" and a bossa-novatized "It Might As Well Be Spring." Karrin Allyson, who also plays piano on three numbers, shows a great deal of potential throughout her rewarding debut. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Kim Kashkashian & Robert Levin-Asturiana: Songs From Spain and Argentina (2007) |

 |
Artists: Kim Kashkashian & Robert LevinAlbum: Asturiana: Sons From Spain and ArgentinaLabel: ECM- new series Size: 165 Mb Quality: mp3@320 Kbps Total time: 72:06 These soulful Spanish and Argentinean songs arranged by violist Kim Kashkashian and pianist Robert Levin are well suited to their expressive and expansive playing. Most of the songs, ranging from works by Granados, de Falla, and Montsalvatge to early Ginastera, are written in a late romantic to early modern idiom, and many incorporate a strong folk element. The selections include rowdy, rhythmically charged dance-like songs, tender lullabies, and many flavors of love songs, from the exultant to the despairing. In addition to the better-known composers, Argentineans Carlos Guastavino and Carlos López-Buchardo make extraordinarily fine contributions. The choices of repertoire are excellent; each one of these songs is a jewel, and the ordering of the selections artful, including the surprisingly effective repetition of two songs at different points in the program. The transcriptions are inventive and imaginative, with the vocal lines idiomatically adapted for the viola's expressive capabilities. Kashkashian is a remarkable violist who brings vibrancy to everything she plays, and these relatively straightforward songs are no exception. Her warm, throaty tone and the nuanced, colorful inflections of her playing accentuate the vocal origins of the pieces. With his springy and languid rhythmic energy, Robert Levin is an equal partner in making the performances sparkle with passion. ECM's well-balanced sound has a little ambient noise, which is unusual for the label's scrupulous engineers, but it's not enough to be bothersome. ~ Stephen Eddins, All Music Guide |

Bonerama - Bring It Home |
Music » Jazz » Swing |

 |
Artist: Bonerama Album: Bring It HomeLabel: Highsteppin' Productions Year: 2007 Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kb/s Size - 115 mb Bonerama, the New Orleans horn band boasting four trombones, seems to have tired of beginning its album titles with the word "Live" (Live at the Old Point, Live from New York), so the group's third album is not called "Live from Tipitina's" even though it is; it's called Bringing It Home, which is also accurate, since Bonerama was formed at Tipitina's nightclub in New Orleans in 1998. If the Dirty Dozen Brass Band revised notions about a horn outfit's sound and repertoire, Bonerama takes those revisions a step further. Its ensemble sound sometimes suggests the rock group Chicago and sometimes a small, well-rehearsed college marching band. Although many of the tunes are originals by the bandmembers, the selections that stand out are the surprising covers, such as Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean" and two songs from the Beatles The White Album, "Yer Blues" and "Helter Skelter." The arrangements replace some of the guitar parts with horn parts, naturally, but the influence of classic rock, particularly of Jimi Hendrix, remains in guitarist Bert Cotton's acid-tinged lead work. To demonstrate its jazz chops, Bonerama also turns in a strong cover of Thelonious Monk's "Epistrophy." Yet for all this eclecticism, the group remains at its core a New Orleans horn band, and by the end of the set it has evoked Louis Armstrong and the Meters before ending with a hidden track that is a musical commercial for another city nightspot, all of which confirms that the group's decision to keep recording live albums, especially at its home base, is a good one. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide |

Freddie Roach - Down to Earth |
Music » Soul » Soul-Jazz |

 |
Artist: Freddie RoachAlbum: Down to EarthLabel: Blue Note Quality: FLAC & MP3@320 Size: 274 MB & 87 MB Time: 38:57 Freddie Roach differentiated himself from the legions of soul-jazz organists on his debut album, Down to Earth. Many jazz organists played the instrument down and dirty, and while there's funk in Roach's playing, his style is ultimately lighter than many of his peers, with clean, concise solos and chords. His backing trio -- guitarist Kenny Burrell, tenor saxophonist Percy France, and drummer Clarence Johnston -- follows his lead, providing supple instrumental support that never loses sight of the groove. Furthermore, Burrell and France both have their chances to shine, contributing some nicely understated solos. Nevertheless, Down to Earth remains Roach's show; he wrote five of the six songs and his organ is at center stage on each number. The legato blues of "De Bug" is a terrific showcase for Roach's elegantly funky style, while the sprightlier "Ahm Miz" proves that he can get gritty if he so chooses. But the signature of Down to Earth is Roach's tasteful bluesy grooves, which prove to be just as entertaining as the hotter styles of his Blue Note peers Jimmy Smith and John Patton. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide |

Caetano Veloso - Muito (1978) |
Music » Jazz » Latin |

 |
Artist - Caetano VelosoAlbum - MuitoLabel - Verve Year - 1978 Quality - MP3@320 kbps Size - 101 mb Total time - 44:50 A beautiful album, Muito reveals Caetano Veloso for the great poet/lyricist he is, and spares listeners from his sometimes pretentious intellectualism. "Terra" is a touching ode to mother Earth delivered with 12-string violões and discrete percussion. "Tempo de Estio" celebrates tropical pleasures. "Muito Romântico" is a beautiful song, but the use of a choir with square vocal arrangements compromised it. "Quem Cochicha o Rabo Espicha" (Jorge Ben) has an exciting swing where a jazz piano adds a nice touch, but Ben's rendition is unrivaled. "Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar" is pure Veloso and his most delicate style interpreting the bossa classic at the violão. "Sampa" was the big hit of this album, quickly transformed in an unofficial anthem to the city of São Paulo, becoming a synonym for it. The voice/piano rendition of "Eu Ee Amo" is also very expressive. A sometimes delicate, sometimes swinging album, without electronics, and very strong melodically. ~ Alvaro Neder, All Music Guide |

Louis Hayes Quintet - The Candy Man |
Hard-bop, Post-bop |
 |
 |
Artist: Louis Hayes QuintetAlbum: The Candy ManLabel: TCB Release Date: 2001 Size: 142 mb Quality: 320 kbps Although not derivative or music that is strictly re-created, this outing from veteran drummer Louis Hayes can be subtitled "Back to Blue Note." The music is often fiery and spirited hard bop with Hayes driving the ensembles. Riley Mullins is a spirited trumpeter who is featured quite effectively on a mute on "Ill Wind," while Abraham Burton's tenor solos show the influence of John Coltrane in spots but have a personality of their own; he is excellent during his ballad showcase on Lee Morgan's "Second Best." But actually pianist Dave Hazeltine, who has the most mature style of the main soloists, often takes honors, particularly on his own "Pentagon." In addition to three group originals, the program features music from Horace Silver (a couple of his lesser-known songs: "Pyramid" and "Safari"), Lee Morgan, Anthony Newley, and Freddie Redd. Redd's "Thespian" is a particular highlight, starting with a thoughtful melody statement, doubling its tempo, and then ending with a speedy reading of the complex theme. Newley's "The Candy Man," despite its childish melody, is turned into swinging jazz. Along the way Hayes and bassist Santi DeBriano have a couple solos, but the main emphasis is on the individual statements of the horns and Hazeltine. The energy and enthusiasm of the musicians, in addition to the well-planned program, make this a highly recommended effort. Scott Yanow, AMG |

His raw, driving, highly rhythmicesmen as R.L. Burnside, a young neighbor of McDowell's who learned directly at the senior bluesman's feet. These recordings (McDowell's first after Lomax's 1959 field trip) were made by Dick Spottswood at McDowell's home in 1962. At the time Spottswood had no notion the recordings would ever be issued. They became part of the collection of the Library of Congress and remained unreleased until Britain's Heritage label brought them out on LP in the early '80s. Out-of-print for some time, and never before issued in the US, this album focuses on the blues songs McDowell recorded that day in 1962. Included among these 20 tracks are some of McDowell's best known songs: "Write Me a Few Lines," "Red Cross Store," "Shake 'Em on Down," "Highway 61" and others. Two years later McDowell electrified audiences at the Newport Folk Festival and, subsequently, around the world. One of his signature tunes, "You Got to Move," was covered by the Rolling Stones, bringing McDowell wide recognition and a significant royalty check. Here is a glimpse of Mississippi Fred McDowell before the world discovered him, playing some of the delta's most distinctive country blues in his Como, Mississippi living room for an audience of family and friends. ~ Amazon.com |

Artist - Teddy Edwards Album - Heart & Soul Label - OJC/Contemporary Year - 1963, release - 1992 Quiality - MP3@320 kbps Size - 102 mb (with covers) Total time - 42:05 With pianist Gerry Wiggins exclusively playing organ, this is a slightly unusual date for tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards; bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Milt Turner complete the quartet. Edwards is in typically fine form on four diverse blues, his "No Regrets" and the standard "Secret Love." Even if Wiggins was not the most inspiring organist around (although he was quite competent), Teddy's playing makes this CD reissue worthwhile. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |

Artist: Johnny Hartman Album: Thank You For Everything Year: 1990 Label: AUDIOPHILE Genre: Jazz Format: mp3 320kbps Size: 137 MB Total time: 59:39 In 1978, Johnny Hartman was featured twice on Alec Wilder's legendary radio series. This 1998 CD has all of the music from those dates (released commercially for the first time) with Hartman being tastefully accompanied by pianist Loonis McGlohon, bassist Terry Lassiter and drummer James Lackey. Fifty-five at the time, Hartman was still in prime form, as he shows throughout the lengthy set of ballads. All of the songs are standards, although a couple (such as "The Morning After" and the Ellington/Strayhorn number, "You Better Know It") are lesser-known. The title cut is actually a vocalized version of Strayhorn's "Lotus Blossom." Other highlights include "I'm Glad There Is You," "Easy to Love," two versions of "Warm Valley" and a remake of "Lush Life." almusic.com |

Artist: Johnny Hartman Album: Live At Sometime Year: 2003 Label: Absord Japan Format: mp3 320kbps Size: 93 MB Though he was never the most distinctive vocalist, Johnny Hartman rose above others to become the most commanding, smooth balladeer of the 1950s and '60s, a black crooner closely following Billy Eckstine and building on the form with his notable jazz collaborations, including the 1963 masterpiece John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman. Born in Chicago, he began singing early on and performed while in Special Services in the Army. Hartman studied music while at college and made his professional debut in the mid-'40s, performing with Earl Hines and recording his first sides for Regent/Savoy. After Hines' band broke up later in 1947, Hartman moved to the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band and stayed for two years, recording a few additional sides for Mercury as well. |
