Jacques Loussier Trio - Plays Debussy (2000) Music » Jazz
Jacques Loussier Trio - Plays Debussy (2000)
Artist: Jacques Loussier Trio
Album: Plays Debussy
Label: Telarc jazz
Quality: APE (204 MB) + mp3@320Kbps (131 MB) (scans)
Total time: 51:15

When Jacques Loussier gave the music of Johann Sebastian Bach the jazz treatment (as others, notably the Modern Jazz Quartet, had before him), it worked really well. The tumbling flow of Bach's contrapuntal lines, the square rhythms that just beg to be played with a swing feel -- everything about Bach that makes his music the farthest thing from jazz seems to make jazz adaptations inevitable. The French composer Claude Debussy is a less obvious choice, and on this album you see why. Debussy was a much more impressionistic composer, and his music doesn't have either the rhythmic vitality or the sense of driving tonal logic that fuels the music of Bach. That makes it harder to fit his compositions into a jazz context. That Loussier succeeds as much as he does is a compliment to his sensitivity as a pianist and to his trio's ability to work with him intuitively. Loussier's renditions of "Prelude a l'Apres-Midi d'un Faune" and "Reverie" sound a lot like Bill Evans at his most ethereal; things pick up a bit on "L'Isle Joyeuse," but even that relatively energetic track is pretty well lacking in swing. The final result is music that doesn't sound much like jazz, but is quite enjoyable anyway. - by Rick Anderson, AMG
Chicago Underground Trio - Flamethrower Jazz, Post-bop, Modern Jazz
Chicago Underground Trio - Flamethrower
Artist: Chicago Underground Trio
Album: Flamethrower
Label: Delmark
Released Year: 2000
Genre: Jazz
Format/Bitrate: MP3/320Kbps CBR
Size: 97280 KB + 54766 KB

Chicago Underground is the handle used by cornetist Rob Mazurek and drummer Chad Taylor. The final designation can be Duo, Orchestra, or, as here, Trio--depending (naturally) on the number of people joining in. What's more, the lineup for Chicago Underground Trio's Flamethrower is actually a quartet that features bassist Noel Kupersmith and guitarist Jeff Parker. Confused? All four are part of the busy circle of musicians who move between the postbop, freeform jazz circles and the Windy City's shape-shifting postrock scene. The music on Flamethrower is often thoughtful, filled with melodic, sometimes sonorous phrasing. Keeping things from getting too chill, the group creates a backdrop of free-jazz musings and filigrees, odd electronic loops, and the pitter-patter of percussion. Parker and Mazurek do much of the lead work, but seldom intersect, opting to take turns instead. Like artists working with splashes of sound, the four create impressionistic aural works that are nothing less than magical. (Tad Hendrickson)

Julian Sas - Dedication (2cd Live)
Artist: Julian Sas
Album: Dedication
Label: Corazong records
Year: 2007
Quality: vbr - Highest Quality

'Dedication' is the the second DVD release of the Dutch blues-rocker Julian Sas.'Dedication' is the recording of the concert with which Julian Sas celebrated the ten year old existence of its band. The concert was recorded in a completely sold-out concerthall "013" in Tilburg, Holland. The band of Julian has developed the past 10 years to a very well oiled diesel. Drummer rob Heijne, keyboardplayer Pieter van Bogaert from Belgium and bass player Tenny Tahamata ensures with Julian an evening of premier league blues.

Liner notes:
"We baptized the European 4-disc set "Dedicat10n" to commemorate Julian Sas' dedication to his music and to bringing his music to the world. The 10 in "Dedicat10n" stands for the 10th anniversary of the Julian Sas Band. At the same time this is the 10th album release by Julian. And personally I recognize the figure 10 as reflecting the quality of Julian's music at this captured moment in time. The 4-disc-set contains 2 DVD's with the full Tilburg concert of January 2006, and the 2 CD's contain the audio-mix of the same jubilee gig. The launch of "Dedicat10n" marks the second time a full Julian Sas show is published on DVD. This concert at O13 in Tilburg was attended by almost 2000 loyal fans, the same fans that continue to give Julian the inspiration and dedication to progress his music. It is a privilege to have been involved with Julian's career during those fabulous ten years. I have scouted hundreds of guitarists and blues-bands around the globe and I know that this guy is the real McCoy: The Power and The Blues! Turning privilege into dedication, we at Corazong Records will not rest till the world agrees!" - Evert Wilbrink

The Kamikaze Ground Crew is often referred to as "six horns and a drummer". The wide-ranging influences that the players bring to the group include jazz, European circus and street music, world folk, brass band, chamber music, and rock-and-roll. Among them, the members of KGC play nearly forty instruments, and in their collective careers they have played with such musicians as Don Cherry, Brian Eno, Jon Hassell, Urban Verbs, Joseph Jarman, Carla Bley, Bill Frisell, Wayne Horwitz, and others. The ensemble began as musical collaborators with the Flying Karamazov Brothers in 1983, and continues to work in theatrical as well as musical contexts. Past projects include Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors at Lincoln Center in 1987 and Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival in 1986. - from the original liner notes

Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker first became aware of each other in 1940 when the former was playing in Cab Calloway's band and the latter with Jay McShann. Two years later they were both living in New York City and a real friendship developed. By 1945 they were recording and gigging together, culminating in this Town Hall concert on June 22, 1945. These recordings languished for sixty years as acetates that weren't even known to exist in their entirety. That this set captures these two formidable players in their ascendancy and with such clarity is a staggering find. Here, with host Symphony Sid announcing the songs (this would have been for his radio show, but apparently never ended up in his possessions), an important chapter in American music is now restored. By the end of the summer of '45 Gillespie and Parker went their separate ways, both emerging with their own bands and reaching new heights of commercial success. -- by David Greenberger. Amazon.com

Art Taylor - Taylor's Tenors
Artist: Art Taylor
Album: Taylor's Tenors
Label: New Jazz 8219
Quality: FLAC & MP3@320
Size: 240 MB & 81 MB
Time: 36:18

Legendary drummer Art Taylor played on a multitude of classic jazz sessions, but only managed to release a few dates as a leader before he passed away in 1995. His second, Taylor's Tenors, from mid-1959, features two straight-ahead tenor saxophonists, Charlie Rouse and Frank Foster, engaging in an insightful yet swinging hard bop conversation. Rouse would shortly become Thelonious Monk's tenor of choice, while Foster continued his tenure with Count Basie's band for another five years. These six hard bop pieces include two by Monk, Jackie McLean's "Fidel," and originals each from Rouse, pianist Walter Davis, and Taylor. Al Campbell, AMG

Sarah Vaughan - The George Gershwin Songbook Vol.1 (1957)
     Artist: Sarah Vaughan
Album: The George Gershwin Songbook Vol.1
     Recording Date: Oct 26, 1955-1957
     Label: EmArcy
     Time: 50:07
     Format: mp3 320 Kbps
     Size: 70 Mb +36 Mb

With the exception of three songs recorded earlier, all of this set (the first of two CDs) dates from 1957 and finds the great Sarah Vaughan accompanied by her regular pianist Jimmy Jones plus a studio orchestra arranged by Hal Mooney. Since these 15 selections are fairly concise (two to five minutes apiece), the emphasis is on the melody and the original lyrics without all that much improvising taking place. Sassy, who had a wondrous voice, is in excellent form on the superior material, making this CD a fine complement to Ella Fitzgerald's better-known Gershwin Songbook. (Review By Scott Yanow)

As with the first volume of this two-CD series, the majority of the selections date from 1957 and feature Sarah Vaughan (backed by an anonymous studio orchestra with pianist Jimmy Jones arranged by Hal Mooney) doing straightforward and concise versions of George Gershwin classics. Vaughan, who is also heard on two other orchestral records (1955's "Maybe" and 1964's "Fascinatin' Rhythm") plus a rendition of "Embraceable You" with the Jimmy Jones Trio, is in typically expressive form. Очень лиричный и спокойный альбом. Рекомендую!

Dancing on the Water features a collection of solo piano performances by Bob James plus duets by James with a diverse array of artists, including bassist Dave Holland, guitarist Chuck Loeb, and pianists Keiko Matsui and Joe Sample. James wrote nine songs on the CD - everything except "Alone Together" and "Last Night When We Were Young." Four songs ("The Green Hour," "Bogie's Boogie," "Hum Drum," and "Modesty") receive the benefit of James performing solo on acoustic piano. His duet with Keiko Matsui, "Altair and Vega," is an eight-minute masterpiece featuring exceptional interplay between the pianists. The sweet melodies along with fine, balanced technique and tremolo earn this duet high marks. Piano and bass duets by James and Dave Holland are featured on "Last Night When We Were Young" and "Autumn Nocture"; both songs strike an artful balance with rhythmic improvisations that reflect the duo's award-winning jazz styles in a complementary setting. Chuck Loeb expands his awareness of jazz guitar on the title track, "Dancing on the Water." His joyful interpretations and subtle surprises make the music of the acclaimed jazz pianist sound fresh and new. Two tracks with Joe Sample, "Alone Together" and "Tapawingo," exhibit the emotive and superbly inventive bebop-based compositions at the hands of two masters. Their crisp, flowing lines and intricate melodic voicings reflect the influence of such jazz icons as Thelonious Monk and McCoy Tyner. This is an excellent CD and Bob James continues his exceptional musical dialogues with more pronounced affection for traditional jazz styles than on previous releases. ~ Paula Edelstein, All Music Guide
