     Art Farmer brought great sophistication and refinement to the trumpet, and later to the flugelhorn - the latter eventually became his horn of choice. On this 1956 recording date, Farmer is joined by many of the original "young lions" of the post ... Full Descriptionbebop era, including the always-swinging tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley. The trumpeter's quintet performs a set of mostly originals written by Mobley, Farmer, and pianist Kenny Drew, with only one standard heard here--the lovely (and often overlooked) Schwartz-Dietz piece "By Myself."
     Each tune is a gem, but the best is left for last on FARMER'S MARKET. The vigorous "Wailin' with Hank" features a burning solo by Farmer, who trades in his characteristically smooth lyricism for a harder-edged, punchy sound (a la Clifford Brown). Elvin Jones's drum solo on this selection adds even more fire to the track. Overall, FARMER'S MARKET is made up of elegant performances that straddle the boundaries between the so-called "hot" and "cool" schools of jazz. It is this ability to defy strict categorization that makes this album such a compelling listen.

     A strikingly attractive "transcultural" project initiated by Tunisian oud virtuoso Anouar Brahem, who is both an innovator and a traditionalist in the deepest sense (he has been credited with "restoring the sovereignty of the oud" in Tunisian music). There is no glib fusion of traditions on Thimar but rather a coming together of three very distinctive musicians who sacrifice none of their individuality in the search for common ground. Weather Report's Black Market, issued in 1976 and here offered in 24-bit digitally remastered form, was notable for the arrival of young bass virtuoso Jaco Pastorius, the addition of the Oberheim Prophet polyphonic synthesizer to Joe Zawinul's bank of keyboards and the title track which, with its sweetly voiced melody, intensifying rhythms and doubled basses achieves the kind of unity you wouldn't expect from a band in constant flux. The album, which preceded the 1977 breakthrough, Heavy Weather, does not showcase Wayne Shorter to best effect--his pretty but banal composition "Elegant People", on which he plays the electronic Lyricon as well as tenor and soprano, is TV theme music crossed with smooth jazz. But with "Cannon Ball", Zawinul's heartfelt tribute to his former boss Cannonball Adderley and "Barbary Coast", on which Pastorius steps out with his fretless funkified axe, Black Market stands up as one of the more rewarding Weather Report efforts of the period. --Lloyd Sachs
