Jean-Luc Ponty - Live at Donte's (1995) |
Music » Jazz |
 |
 |
Artist: Jean-Luc Ponty Album: Live at Donte's Label: Blue Note Records Year: 1995 Genre: Jazz Format, bitrate: MP3@192 kbps Time: 71:53 Size: 99 Mb Recorded live at Donte's, North Hollywood, California, on March 12-13, 1969In October 1969 violinist Jean-Luc Ponty recorded a notable live set with keyboardist George Duke, bassist John Heard and drummer Dick Berk that gained him a lot of exposure in the U.S. He had actually played at Donte's in Los Angeles with Duke (on acoustic piano), Heard and drummer Al Cecchi the previous March. Four of the songs came out on a 1981 LP. This CD reissues that program and then doubles it with four more songs from the same engagement. This is a release that is particularly recommended to listeners who are not interested in Ponty's many fusion projects for his playing here is relatively straightahead and sounds influenced by the work of the mid-1960's Miles Davis Quintet, and not just because he performs Ron Carter's "Eighty-One." Also of great interest are the solos of Duke, who would eventually become a funk keyboardist and then a pop producer. In this context he sounds like a mixture of McCoy Tyner and Herbie Hancock. Daniel Mille - Entre Chien Et Loup |

Artist: Daniel Mille Album: Entre Chien Et Loup Label: Universal Music S.A. France Year: 2001 Genre: Jazz Format, bitrate: mp3@320Kbps Time: 55:27min Size: 122 Mb
Entre chien et loup ("Between dog and wolf"; translated here as Owl-Light ) is a remarkable album, most notably because it hovers between classical and jazz, a realm already explored to some degree by Ellington and the artist/composers on the now hard-to-find LP The Birth of the Third Stream. In this sense the original French title speaks volumes, as the music lies somewhere between the domesticated pet that is classical and the wild, unruly wolf that is jazz – speaking in the most general metaphorical terms, of course. The spontaneous appears alongside the structured, like the way the breezy piano/accordion number "Danse 7" comes before the four-part suite entitled "Les Errances d’une Valse" written in 11/4 time. |

Derek & The Dominos - Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs (1970) |

Artist: Derek & The Dominos Album: Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs Label: Polydor Year: 1990 Genre: Blues, Blues Rock Tracks: 14 Format: flac (5) File Size: 4 x 99 MB + 1 x 54 MB Layla stands as one of a handful of pillars of classic rock. The short-lived ensemble that was the Dominos provided an outlet for Eric Clapton to vent his then unrequited (and secret) passion for the wife of his best friend, George Harrison. Romantic anguish inspired Clapton to write and collect an embroiling and interconnected song cycle. Meanwhile, latecomer Duane Allman prodded Clapton to tear it up on guitar, so as not to be overwhelmed by his even more talented foil. Of course, Clapton eventually won the hand of his lady love. And then he divorced her. Sometimes real life messes up a good plot line. |

 |
Artist: Maxine Sullivan Album: A Tribute to Andy Razaf Year: 1956 Label: DCC Size: 92 mb Quality: mp3, 320 kb/s Maxine Sullivan always had a cheerful and subtly swinging style. This formerly rare release (originally on the Period label) finds her interpreting a dozen numbers that have the lyrics of Andy Razaf including such classics as "Keeping out of Mischief Now," "Stompin' at the Savoy," "Honeysuckle Rose," "Memories of You" and "Ain't Misbehavin'." Joined by a sextet reminiscent of John Kirby's group of 15 years earlier (and featuring such Kirby alumni as trumpeter Charlie Shavers and clarinetist Buster Bailey), Sullivan is in top form on this delightful session. Artist: Deborah Henson-Conant Album: Just for You Release Date: 1995 Label: Laika Type: Live Genre: Jazz Format: Flac Size: 228+137 Mb Джаз на арфе и немного вокала. Арфистка Дебра Хэнсон (Deborah Henson) с альбомом "Just for You". Official site From Wikipedia Harpist Deborah Henson-Conant teams up with bassist Wolfgang Diekmann and percussionist Davey Tulloch for live versions of ten of her originals. Henson-Conant, who also contributes vocals and humorous introductions, proves to be quite a showperson in addition to being a superior harpist. The music falls somewhere between advanced bop, crossover and even cabaret. No matter what it is called, this release from the German label Laika is colorful and entertaining, not merely a replay of Henson-Conant's GRP recordings. Scott Yanow, AMG |

The Complete Charlie Shavers With Maxine Sullivan |

Artists: Charlie Shavers; Maxine Sullivan Album - The Complete Charlie Shavers With Maxine Sullivan Label - Avenue Jazz/Bethlehem Year - 1954, release - 1999 Genre - swing, jazz-vocal Quality - MP3@320 kbps Size - 59 mb Total time - 39:27 Charlie Shavers was one of the great trumpeters to emerge during the swing era, a virtuoso with an open-minded and extroverted style along with a strong sense of humor. He originally played piano and banjo before switching to trumpet, and he developed very quickly. In 1935, he was with Tiny Bradshaw's band and two years later he joined Lucky Millinder's big band. Soon afterward he became a key member of John Kirby's Sextet where he showed his versatility by mostly playing crisp solos while muted. Shavers was in demand for recording sessions and participated on notable dates with New Orleans jazz pioneers Johnny Dodds, Jimmy Noone, and Sidney Bechet. He also had many opportunities to write arrangements for Kirby and had a major hit with his composition "Undecided." After leaving Kirby in 1944, Charlie Shavers worked for a year with Raymond Scott's CBS staff orchestra, and then was an important part of Tommy Dorsey's Orchestra from 1945 until past TD's death in 1956. Although well-featured, this association kept Shavers out of the spotlight of jazz, but fortunately he did have occasional vacations in which he recorded with the Metronome All-Stars and toured with Jazz at the Philharmonic; at the latter's concerts in 1953, Shaver's trumpet battles with Roy Eldridge were quite exciting. After Dorsey's death, Shavers often led his own quartet although he came back to the ghost band from time to time. During the 1960s, his range and technique gradually faded, and Charlie Shavers died from throat cancer in 1971 at the age of 53. ~ Scott Yanow |

Artist: Blind Boy Fuller Album: Truckin' My Blues Away Released: 1978 Audio Cd: 1991 Label: Yazoo Genre: Blues Format: Mp3@320 Kb/s Size: 97.8Mb Time: 37.1" For most listeners, Blind Boy Fuller's Truckin' My Blues Away (on Yazoo) may be a better bet than Columbia/Legacy's East Coast Piedmont Style, since it actually has a higher concentration of strong material, capturing the influential bluesman at his peak. All of the 14 tracks were recorded between 1935 and 1938, and there are a number of exceptional performances here, including "Homesick and Lonesome Blues," "Truckin' My Blues Away," "I Crave My Pig Meat," "Walking My Troubles Away" and "Sweet Honey Hole." It's a nice, concise introduction and, best of all, there's no duplication between this disc and East Coast Piedmont Style, making the two discs wonderful complementary collections that tell a comprehensive story when taken together. Jeri Brown - Firm Roots |

 |
Artist: Jeri Brown Album: Firm Roots Label: Justin Time Orig Year: 2003 Quality: mp3 @ 256 Size: 62+59 mb Great range, pure tones, and understated nuance bring a beautiful lilt to the voice of Jeri Brown on Firm Roots, her ninth release as a leader. The title pays homage to the up-tempo bebop classic penned by Cedar Walton which inspired Brown's treatment of "The Roots of Life." This program also contains a fine selection of original arrangements that Brown wrote for such great songs as "Feeling Good"and "What the World Needs Now," among others. These skills help to place her in the same group of illustrious jazz vocalists/arrangers as Nnenna Freelon or Karrin Allyson, with respect to arranging and vocalizing the poetic necessities it takes to capture listeners from the first note sung or played. However, Jeri Brown's own style is full of reasons for a standing ovation. Anyone looking for proof that her cultural excellence stems from her inspired roots in gospel, jazz, and classical depths need only take one listen to her renditions of R&B, rock and pop favorites "With a Child's Heart,""We May Never Pass This Way Again," or "Will It Go Round in Circles." Brown has a beautiful honey-flavored voice and the musical personality of a positive, idealistic, soft-spoken poet but her life experiences filter through on these songs with the illumination of a 100-watt bulb. In other words, she's got what it takes to brighten up the present-day jazz galaxy of vocal artists. ~ Paula Edelstein, All Music Guide |

Artist: Jeri Brown Album: April in Paris Original Release Date: November 19, 1996 Label: Justin Time Records Quality: mp3 @vbr extreme Size: 100 mb Jeri Brown, who has emerged to become one of the top jazz singers of the 1990s, pays tribute to the passion of Paris on this CD without performing the title cut. Sticking to ballads (other than a medium-tempo "Summertime"), Brown's sensuous voice (particularly her low notes) are well suited to the complex material, which includes a song co-written with Kenny Wheeler ("Gentle Piece"), a pair of Michel Legrand numbers that add the effective accordion of Roberto De Brashov, a brief poem, a couple of standards and mostly high-quality obscurities. The music is atmospheric and sometimes haunting, swinging lightly and filled with subtle invention by the talented singer and her supportive trio. |

Artist: Archie Shepp + Kahil El'Zabar's Ritual Trio Album: Conversations Year: 1999 Label: Delmark Country: USA Format: FLAC Size: 335 Mb Personnel: Archie Shepp, Ari Brown, Malachi Favors, Kahil El' Zabar Maybe it's just Archie Shepp's preeminence over musicians who came in his wake or maybe it's his mahogany tone, big and thick. Then again, maybe it's Kahil El'Zabar's love of polyrhythms. But this marriage of Chicago's Ritual Trio and jazz veteran Shepp is an utterly compelling one. The whole CD bounces in broad jumps, taken at a midtempo pace with an ecumenical command of every post-bebop, acoustic-jazz style. Repost with new links |

Artist: Wilbur Harden Album: Mainstream 1958 Label: Nippon Columbia (1992) Format: APE & MP3@320Kbps Size: 177 & 83 MB (scans) Total playing: 37:09 The tunes for the date are simple, yet effective vehicles for the superb blowing herein. The opener, "Wells", is a loping blues-y track. "West" in medium up with everybody relaxing in 4-to-the-bar. "EFFPH" is a Latinish bit centering around 8 measure chordal pattern that repeats itself in almost a "montuno" style for the soloists. Side B's "Snuffy" is medium up again with extended Blues choruses, and the closer follows a similar pattern. -- by H. Alan Stein (from original lines notes) |
