This LP was a change of pace for pianist Ahmad Jamal, whose trio (with bassist Israel Crosby and drummer Vernell Fournier) is joined by a 15-piece string section arranged and conducted by Joe Kennedy. The interpretations are generally pretty, but with enough variety to hold one's interest.      Представляю еще один редкий диск великого Рэя Чарльза - "Love & Peace", выпущенный на виниле Atlantic records в 1978 году. С тех пор диск ни разу не переиздавался, и, чтобы получить приемлемое качество (которое было очень плохим), пришлось провести оцифровку, резку и очистку сигнала.
     Обращает внимание высочайший уровень вокала и аранжировки.
     Стилистика диска не типична для Рэя - большинство композиций (но не все!) выдержано не в стиле R&B, а в достаточно жестком JazzRock-Soul, поэтому здесь Рэй вообще не играет соло.
     На диске можно услышать музыку и приемы в стиле BS&T, Ареты, Отиса... Но и здесь Рэй, что бы он не исполнял, все равно лучше всех, потому что он ГЕНИЙ!

Here, unfortunately, is one of several examples of why Ray Charles has been such a frustrating record-maker over the last quarter of the 20th century at least. His powers of expression as a vocalist and keyboardist are undiminished on the second album of his return to the Atlantic fold; he could still squeeze some soul out of anything. But his ability to choose great, good, or even merely appropriate material had deserted him -- and so we hear nowhere ballads ("She Knows"), stale song ideas ("You 20th Century Fox"), empty, poorly arranged and paced rousers ("We Had It All"), and political statements that fall flat ("A Peace That We Never Before Could Enjoy," "Give the Poor Man a Break") -- nothing that even this prodigious talent can save, and all treated to a veiled, raucous mix. Other than the team of arrangers (Harry Goodnight, Roger Newman, Larry Mahoberack), there are no musician credits nor any notes. Ultimately the blame for this uninteresting record must go to the producer, the co-engineer, the lead keyboardist, and the singer -- who are all one and the same person. ~ Richard S. One of three Duke Jordan CDs previously unissued from the Japanese based Marshmallow label, the expatriate pianist is showcased in a session from 1983 featuring the fine European bassist Jesper Lundgaard, and fellow flown-the-U.S. coop jazzman, the great drummer Ed Thigpen. There are four rare originals of Jordan's, some standards, and the obscure Duke Ellington number "Chocolate Shake." The spirited violinist Kristian Jorgensen joins the trio for a hot version of Charlie Parker's "Au Privave." Unfortunately these are old reel-to-reel recordings that have probably been sitting for years, and there's an inconsistency in the sound quality — either a magnetic degradation or slight tape wobble — that mars the quality of the performances. Then again, it could be a good recording of a bad spinet or upright piano. One way or another, the piano itself does not sound right. Though there are not nearly enough documents of Duke Jordan's wonderful music in the world, this one needed a bit more care in reproducing or properly capturing. ~ Michael G. Nastos, AMG

Trumpeter Joe Newman, best-known for his playing with Count Basie's Orchestra, led four albums for RCA during 1955-1956. This generous two-CD set reissues all the music from these dates, and has plenty of swinging performances. The first disc puts the focus on Newman and tenor saxophonist Al Cohn in a pair of octets with arrangements by Ernie Wilkins, Manny Albam, and Cohn. The second disc starts out with a tribute to Louis Armstrong, a dozen of Satch's songs modernized for a big band; Newman takes a few rare vocals. The final session matches Newman with flutist Frank Wess in a two-guitar septet arranged by Wilkins. While most of the other two-fers in this French RCA Jazz Tribune series are reissues of earlier two-LP sets, this one was newly compiled and has 48 splendid examples of Basie-ish swing.
