REPOST

In 1958, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, one of the most popular jazz groups in the world, played 80 concerts in 14 countries during a three-month period. To salute the marathon road trip, the pianist/leader composed six songs for a new recording (which is now out on this CD). "Nomad" and "Brandenburg Gate" are the best-known originals but all of the other selections are equally enjoyable, featuring fine solos from Brubeck and altoist Paul Desmond. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG

Norman Granz is one of the actors the most important non-musicians of the history of the jazz and nobody else than so much contributed to him in bet on stage, recording and immortalisation of jazz concerts. This series of performances of the prestigious Jazz festival of Montreux pays tribute now to this job available in DVD for the first time. Oscar Peterson is simply one of the biggest pianists of jazz that the earth ever hits. This rare and incredible concert filmed in 1975 is a chance to see Peterson nearly the time of an intimist show to appreciate better to what extent this pianist can be brilliant.

Mostly spotlighting Davis' late-'40s and early-'50s tenure at Blue Note, this best-of disc offers a very fine way for newcomers to get familiar with the early output of one of the all-time jazz greats. Not to slight later roundups on Prestige and Columbia, but Davis' Blue Note stretch provides listeners with a chance to hear the trumpeter at the height of his trad jazz solo game. Backed by some of the day's top bebop players, Davis finds his fleet feet on such up-tempo gems as "Move," Bud Powell's "Tempus Fugit," and Jimmy Heath's "C.T.A." And the ballads are just as enjoyable, especially "Yesterdays" and "It Never Entered My Mind." Topped off with two selections from a 1958 Cannonball Adderley date featuring Davis, The Best of Miles Davis makes for an attractive alternative to the complete Blue Note and Capitol Recordings package. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music Guide

John Scofield is considered one of the "big three" of current jazz guitarists - along with Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell. His influence began in the late 70’s and is going strong today. Possessor of a very distinctive sound and stylistic diversity, Scofield is a masterful jazz improviser whose music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, funk edged jazz, and R & B.

Born in Ohio and raised in suburban Connecticut, Scofield took up the guitar at age 11, inspired by both rock and blues players. He attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. After a debut recording with Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, Scofield was a member of the Billy Cobham-George Duke band for two years. In 1977 he recorded with Charles Mingus, and joined the Gary Burton quartet. He began his international career as a bandleader and recording artist in 1978. From 1982-1985, Scofield toured and recorded with Miles Davis. His Davis stint placed him firmly in the foreground of jazz consciousness as a player and composer.

Since that time he has prominently led his own groups in the international Jazz scene, recorded over 30 albums as a leader (many already classics) including collaborations with contemporary favorites like Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Eddie Harris, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Bill Frisell, Brad Mehldau, Mavis Staples, Government Mule, Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano and Phil Lesh. He’s played and recorded with Tony Williams, Jim Hall, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Dave Holland, Terumasa Hino among many jazz legends. Throughout his career Scofield has punctuated his traditional jazz offerings with funk-oriented electric music. All along, the guitarist has kept an open musical mind.

A 1992 CD reissue of their 1979 album, among their only releases ever issued by a major label. It was characteristically free-wheeling and eclectic, with long stretches of classical, Asian, African, and jazz coming together, and the group mixing structured ensemble work with surging free solos. -- by Ron Wynn, AMG

This four-disc box set documents Herbie Hancock's recorded career during the 1970s and '80s, and contains nearly all of the pianist's most famous compositions. However, this collection is not just about greatest hits. Project director Seth Rothstein ... Full Descriptiondug deep into the Hancock archives to create a release that also has great variety and character.

For example, the first disc begins with a nearly five-minute free-form improvisation from Hancock on electric piano. And even the well-known "Maiden Voyage" receives a completely different treatment here. Taken from a live concert in New York City, the track features Hancock and company turning this once understated and spacey modal jam into a fiery musical odyssey. "Domo" is another scorching live cut that boasts bold improvisations from saxophonist Wayne Shorter, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, and Hancock himself, all anchored by drummer Tony Williams, who drives the group with bombastic irreverence. THE HERBIE HANCOCK BOX also presents Hancock's forays into electronic dance music, the most obvious inclusion being "Rockit," his early-'80s radio hit. This funky piece adds an intriguing counterpoint to this collection. However, Hancock's jazz material remains his true legacy.

The cover looks like a bad episode of "To Tell The Truth" Who's the real golfer here? Shelly could almost pass for one, but he's not bending his knees, nor is his left elbow straight. Hamp seems to the most athletic of the crew, but again, the knees ain't bent, and the body is too upright--and he's looking up too soon (probably a slice into the woods) Red looks like he could give a shit. I'd say it's Barney, but why is he putting from the middle of the fairway. The other obvious problem for this foursome is that they all have drivers and they're all playing out of the same bag. Oh, the album is great, but if these guys were behind me on the links, I'm sure you'd here "Fore" rather than "Four" Hamp's intro to Yardbird Suite is one to hear several times.

Duke Jordan - Trio and Quintet (1955)     Artist: Duke Jordan
     Album: Trio And Quintet
     Label: Savoy
     Year: 1955
     Quality: MP3 320 + 5% recovery
     Size: 99 Mb

The title of this 1955 Savoy release by pianist Duke Jordan succinctly points to the set's merits and shortcomings. The five trio performances with Art Blakey (drums) and Percy Heath (bass) work well. The five tracks from the same group augmented by Cecil Payne (baritone sax) and Eddie Bert (trombone) don't come up to the mark. For the trio tracks, Jordan's elegant, swinging bop style is the main attraction, with Blakey and Heath providing appropriately understated support. "They Can't Take That Away From Me" and "Night in Tunisia" are each given fresh reworkings. Jordan's upbeat "Forecast" and his meditative ballad "Sultry Eve" are strong originals. George Gershwin's "Summertime," unfortunately, gets an undistinguished, overly literal reading. 1 On the quintet tracks the focus wavers. Jordan is too often relegated to conventional comping in the background. Blakey's playing occasionally becomes cluttered and Heath seems to lose interest. More problematic is the ineffective, bottom-heavy baritone sax/trombone combination. Payne's and Bert's parts generate little harmonic interest. The result is two horns doing no more than the work of one. As for the tunes, the pianist's "Flight to Jordan" and Payne's "Cu-ba" offer respectable solos, while "Scotch Blues" is an awkward attempt by Jordan to fuse a Scottish folk dance theme with straight-ahead blues. The blues passages are fine, but the scotch doesn't mix. There are some good moments on this CD, particularly from Jordan and Payne. Both the pianist and the baritone saxophonist, however, can be heard to better advantage on Payne's 1956 set, Patterns of Jazz, where Jordan, with Tommy Potter (bass) and Art Taylor (drums), shines in a consistently integrated and cohesive performance with Payne.

Despite its title (which was due to the original LP containing the last of Prestige's John Coltrane material to be released for the first time), this album does not have Coltrane's final recordings either of his career or for Prestige. These "leftovers" are generally rewarding with an alternate take of "Trane's Slo Blues" (called "Slotrane") being joined by three slightly later numbers ("Lover," "By the Numbers" and "Come Rain or Come Shine") taken from quintet sessions with trumpeter Donald Byrd, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and either Louis Hayes or Art Taylor on drums. Enjoyable if not essential hard bop from John Coltrane's productive Prestige period. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Size: 88 mb (RS.com); Cover and LP covers included
AMG Rating: 1953: Chet Baker - Ensemble Stars

Chet Baker Ensemble collects all the tracks recorded by trumpeter Chet Baker and his group on a session for Pacific Jazz in late December of 1953. Having been released piecemeal on various albums over the years, this represents the first complete gathering of this material. Recorded less than two months before the legendary Chet Baker Sings sessions, these tracks showcase the young Baker as a hardcore jazz trumpeter before the public became overwhelmingly infatuated with his unique vocal abilities. Featuring first-rate "West Coast"-style arrangements by tenor saxophonist Jack Montrose — who also composed many of the songs — the septet seems to combine the jocular interplay of Baker's work with saxophonist Gerry Mulligan with the hip, swinging work popularized by the large ensembles of trumpeter Shorty Rogers. Besides Montrose, backing Baker here are saxophonists Herb Geller and Bob Gordon, bassist Joe Mondragon, drummer Shelly Manne, and pianist Russ Freeman. Rating alongside the best of Baker's catalog, Chet Baker Ensemble is a must-hear for both longtime fans and neophytes of the iconic trumpeter/vocalist's work. - AMG

True Grappelli fans know the various phases of Stephane's career. The early years with Django, the post-Django era where Stephane played mostly in hotels and restaurants with jazz combos featuring drums and piano, and the post-1973 era where he gained international recognition playing with guitarists again like Martin Taylor, Diz Dizley, and Mark Fosset sans drums and piano. This album was recorded in 1971 and fits into the second category.
