Richard Leo Johnson - Language (2000) |
Music » Jazz » Fusion |

 |
Artist: Richard Leo JohnsonAlbum: LanguageLabel: Blue Note Quality: Ape (281 MB) + mp3@320Kbps (117 MB) with scans Total time: 49:26 Johnson assembled an unlikely cast of guest musicians: from electric bassist Reggie Washington of the M-Base Collective to Warren Haynes of the reformed Allman Brothers Band. Paul McCandless's oboe and soprano sax and Andy Reinhardt's accordion also create arresting musical colors. Those who don't care for the old-world quality of the accordion ought to hear what Reinhardt is capable of making the instrument become. Upright bassist Glen Moore, drummer Matt Wilson, and percussionist Cyro Baptista also join Johnson, bringing influences from their diverse musical worlds to the project. Johnson strums, picks, and bangs on an assortment of six- and 12-string guitars, as well as pedal steel on the beguiling "Sweet Jane Thyme." The 12-string/accordion duo "Music Roe" and the slide guitar/udu drum juxtaposition on "Freestone Peach" are particularly brilliant. And for fans of Johnson's solo guitar work on the previous album, there's the stunning "New West Helena Blues," played on a McCollum double-neck acoustic guitar. In addition to the ten originals, there are also curious renditions of Irving Berlin's "Cheek to Cheek" and Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Happy Talk," as well as the 24-second "Daddydaughterduo," featuring Johnson with his ten-year-old daughter Tess on cello. Some of the music may get a little flowery, but Johnson's highly idiosyncratic slice of Americana will likely become more and more interesting as his career continues. ~ David R. Adler, AMG |

WALTER TROUT POWER TRIO - Hardcore |

Artist: WALTER TROUT Album: Hardcore Labels: 2000's Blues Rock Year: 2007 Format, bitrate: 320 Size: 137 mb People ask me if they should call my music blues or rock, I tell them they can call it Fred if they must have a label. That remark, along with the exclamation that the blues shouldnt be a museum... the music ought to constantly expand and be alive, have been expressed again and again by Walter Trout during his 35+ year career. Born in 1951 and raised in a music-loving home in Ocean City, New Jersey, Walter Trout felt the calling to music at a young age. His first instrument was trumpet, playing in the school band. A chance meeting with the mighty Duke Ellington catapulted Trouts pursuit of a music career what Walter terms a turning point in his life when the Walters mother orchestrated a meeting with jazz legends Ellington, Cat Anderson, Johnny Hodges and Paul Gonsalves for the youngsters tenth birthday. The seed was planted. In the mid-1960s Trouts instrument of choice switched to electric guitar after hearing an album which was to change his whole appreciation of music. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band featuring Mike Bloomfield cemented Walters musical ambitions towards the blues genre and the electric guitar. In those vinyl grooves, Walter heard the guitar speaking to his soul, expressing what words could not. Walter Trout promised himself to learn this musical language and dedicate his life to the guitar. For hours, days, weeks, months he was locked in his bedroom practicing until his fingers bled - the obsession unfortunately turning the A-student into a high school dropout. As a shy teenager growing up in a turbulent household, his singular solace became his rapidly developing ability to express his feelings playing the guitar and his vision of becoming a professional musician. 1 Gotta Leave This Town 2 Tellin Stories 3 Finally Gotten Over You 4 Give Me Back My Wig 5 The Reason I'm Gone 6 Not Fade Away 7 Channeling Neil Young 8 Sittin On Top Of The World 9 Tribute To Muddy Waters ~ Amazon.com |

Artist: Serge GainsbourgAlbum: Serge GainsbourgLabel: Mercury France/PHILIPS Year: 2000 Genre: Pop Format, bitrate: mp3@320Kbps Time: 78:14 min Size: 171 Mb |

Erik Truffaz - Arkhangelsk (2007) |
Jazz, Modern Jazz |
 |
 |
Artist: Erik TruffazAlbum: ArkhangelskQuality: mp3@320Kbps Size: 137 MB (scans) Label: Blue Note Total time: 57:56 Here, French trumpeter Truffaz is wandering into an introverted landscape, taking his three regular playing partners on a journey that will involve collaborations with a trio of vocalists. The album's ten tracks are divided equally between these instrumental and vocal pieces. The opening "Miss Kaba" sets up a travellin' pulse, with which Truffaz acolytes will be familiar. Truffaz has been marinated in the deep romanticism of Chet Baker and Miles Davis, but he also shares a granulated whisper with Jon Hassell and Arve Henriksen. Veering away from overt funkiness, the emphasis here is on balladry, or at least softly ruminating soundtracks for non-existent movies. It's the three tracks penned with British singer-songwriter Ed Harcourt that cause the most unpleasantness. "Red Cloud" features the kind of vocal employed by a pompadoured metal band for their token ballad number; "Snake Charmer Man" could be from the blander end of Canterbury prog and "Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner" is the best of the three, making a clunky, old-timey stumble. "Trippin' The Lovelight Fantastic" fares better, with the oleaginous rap-poetic intonations of Nya feeling more appropriate to the band's sound. "Les Nuits De Monsieur Naj" and the title cut keep things instrumental, the first a soft ballad that edges into a proggy theme. Again, this is courtesy of Patrick Muller, whose Hammond organ work adds much appealing texture, prompting Truffaz to discover some exceptionally low notes on his horn. Then, "Arkhangelsk" remains in slow mode, also awash with organ, feeding Erik a soulful Ann Peebles "I Can't Stand The Rain" vibe to coax out some delicate solos. Singer Christophe goes for some old-fashioned Parisian smooching on "L'un Dans L'Autre", but it's "Akiko" that makes the listener yearn for an outbreak of uptempo funking. It's a rubbery stepper that benefits from Muller's Fender Rhodes jabbing, flying over a light-touch bassline and skipping drums. The closing "Entre Le Ciel Et L'eau" is another slowie, with a very melancholic charge, a different kind of introversion. There's a vague attempt at conceptuality with the album title, named after the Russian city, just north of Moscow. Truffaz attempts to link the experience of waking to a panoramic vision of rickety houses with the later discovery of 'anarchitect' Richard Greaves' patchwork huts. This unconvincing attempt to explain his music is in keeping with the album's own confused orientation. Not so much an involving variety as a confusion of stylistic droppings. - by Marton Lonley, BBC-Jazz |

Albert King - The Blues Don't Change (1974) |

 |
Artist: Albert KingAlbum: The Blues Don't ChangeLabel: Stax Year: 1974 Release Date:1992 Genre: Blues Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Time: 42:53 Size: 94,3+9,5MB Previously titled The Pinch when it was issued on LP in 1977, this material was actually recorded in 1973 and 1974. These are some of King's most soul-oriented sessions, with contributions from the Memphis Horns and a couple of the MG's. Blues-oriented fans may find this one of his lesser efforts, putting less emphasis on King's guitar work than usual, and more on the vocals and arrangements. This approach has its merits, though, as it's one of the more relaxed items in the King catalog, with none of the occasional excess that creeped into his blues guitar solos. John Lee Hooker - Boom Boom (1992) |

 |
Artist: John Lee HookerAlbum: Boom BoomLabel: Point Blank Year: 1992 Genre: Blues Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Time: 41:52 Size: 86,3+15,1MB John Lee Hooker won many new listeners with his 1989 star-studded comeback album, The Healer, and his 1992 studio album, Boom Boom, was designed as introduction to his classic songs for this new audience. It wasn't that The Healer or its 1991 follow-up, Mr. Lucky, avoided either Hooker's signature boogie or several of his signature tunes, but they were tempered by both a slicker production and newly written tunes. In contrast, Boom Boom was lean and direct, relying on such staples as "Boom Boom," "I'm Bad Like Jesse James," "Bottle Up and Go," and "I Ain't Gonna Suffer No More." This leanness is in comparison to its two immediate predecessors, of course, because Boom Boom is hardly as gritty as the original versions of these tunes. It might not feel as slick as The Healer, but it's polished and professional and filled with cameos -- but this time, the professional sound comes from the seasoned sidemen offering support and the stars here are all guitarists (or in the case of Charlie Musselwhite, a harpist) who never overshadow Hooker. Jimmie Vaughan and Robert Cray have never been known for their flashiness and they give their respective numbers -- "Boom Boom" and "Same Old Blues Again" -- sharp, typically tasteful leads, but even Albert Collins seems a bit restrained on "Boogie at Russian Hill" -- it's as if all involved decided to lay back and give Hook the center stage. However, he's not in a particularly energetic mood here. He's hardly lazy, but he's not inspired either, which leaves Boom Boom as a rather curious entry in his latter-day comeback catalog. The feel is better than The Healer (and certainly the subsequent Chill Out), but it's not as memorable as some of the other albums that may not have been as consistent but at least had distinguishing characteristics. Boom Boom just captures Hooker the professional -- which is good enough to modestly entertain as it plays but it leaves no real impression behind. Stephen Thomas Erlewin.AMG. |

Artist: Tom Principato Album: Play It CoolLabel: Voodoo Records Genre: Blues Styles: Blues, Modern Electric Blues Original Release Date: 23/04/2001 Quality/Bitrate: MP3/224kb/s/44.1Khz/Stereo Cover: Yes Size: 91.3 MB Виртуоз гитары. Приятного прослушивания. Tom Principato is a guitar master but his very sophisticated technique never fights against his inspiration. Plus, Tom is a blues guitarist who is never limited by the usual fences of the style. Tom Principato took up the guitar full time at age 15 while in high school. It has led him to a career with over 20 years of experience in bands from Boston to Washington DC. In between, Tom has backed some blues and R & B artists as John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, Sunnyland Slim & Delbert McClinton. He was part of a band with Danny Gatton (The Blazing Telecasters), and with Jimmy Thackery (The Assassins). Tom and his band won nine Washington Area Music Awards (WAMMIES) yet. |

Artist: Red GarlandAlbum: When There Are Grey SkiesLabel: Prestige Quality: FLAC & MP3@320 Size: 180 MB & 80 MB Time: 35:41 This set was pianist Red Garland's 25th session as a leader since 1956, but it would be eight years before his next record. Garland's influential style had been fully formed since the mid-'50s and his chord voicings were immediately recognizable. With the assistance of bassist Wendell Marshall and drummer Charlie Persip, Garland explores and updates seven veteran songs (including a previously unreleased "My Blue Heaven") dating from the '20s era. This fine CD is highlighted by such unlikely material as "Sonny Boy," "St. James Infirmary," "Baby Won't You Please Come Home," and a 12-minute "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
