Patti Austin - Avant Gershwin (2007) |

 |
Artist: Patti Austin Album: Avant Gershwin Label: Rendezvous Year: 2007 Genre: Rhythm & Blues, jazz vocal Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbps Time: 63:39 Size: 146 Mb Grammy Awards 2008 - BEST JAZZ VOCAL ALBUM A staple of pop, R&B and jazz over the past thirty years, this impossibly versatile singer's 16 album career during that time rolls like a fascinating journey through those genres while also drawing wisdom and inspiration on occasion from The Great American Songbook. Avant Gershwin, Patti Austin's shimmering hour-plus tour de force through both familiar and obscure -- but always intriguing -- selections from the catalog of George & Ira Gershwin, is, for the record, not the first time she's dazzled with their songs. Her 1998 masterpiece The Real Me included "How Long Has This Been Going On?" and "They Can't Take That Away from Me." And her 2002 tribute album For Ella included "Love Is Here to Stay," "But Not for Me" and "The Man I Love." Recorded live before an audience at the Kölner Philharmonic in Köln, and Westfalenpark Dortmund, Germany over two evenings in 2006, Avant Gershwin is in many ways an extension of the Fitzgerald tribute; both find her performing with the vibrant, brassy and swinging backing of the WDR Big Band. Its centerpieces are the "Overture/Gershwin Medley" -- a twelve-minute, moodswinging romp through the big rhythm songs, "Clap Yo' Hands," "Fascinating Rhythm" and "I Got Rhythm" -- and the dramatic 17-minute "Porgy and Bess Medley," which casts Austin as the consummate musical theater performer. The latter begins with a gentle orchestral overture and a tender read of "A Woman Is a Sometime Thing" and a lush twist on the familiar "Summertime" before shifting into full swing mode on "There's a Boat Dat's Leavin' Soon for New York" and back to port for the start of "It Ain't Necessarily So" ahead of a theatrical finish. Beyond right on the money arrangements and Austin's always colorful phrasing, perhaps the most inspired element of the project is her impeccable song choice. Rather than settle for the songs everyone's heard ad nauseum, with the exception of "Swanee," she puts her own stamp on the lovelorn "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise," the witty and delightful "Who Cares"and "Funny Face," and the heartbreaking "Love Walked In/Love Is Sweeping the Country." "Lady Be Good" provides a rousing, bold and brassy finish, with Austin doing the kind of sizzlin' scat that would do her idol proud. Who could ask for anything more? ~ Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide |

1954,1960: Clifford Brown and Max Roach - Alone Together: The Best Of Mercury Years |

Artist: Clifford Brown and Max Roach Album: Alone Ttogether: The Best Of Mercury Years Label: Mercury/Verve Year: 1954, 1960 Genre: Jazz, Bebop Format, bitrate: mp3@320Kbps Time: 73:39 min + 79:32 min Size: 162 Mb + 176 Mb The Clifford Brown - Max Roach Quintet was a landmark unit. It had an uncanny ability to convey the tumbling melodicism of bebop while it introduced a strong blues element - the very characteristics that came to define the hard-bop style. By the end of the Fifties that style was everywhere - and it has a powerful influence on popular music today - but brownie and Roach were there at the git-go. Alone Together is a great introduction to that classic band and some of its startling, original compositions - but it also features Brownie without Roach backing Helen Merrill and Sarah Vaughan on standards. Further, disc two showcases many sides of Max Roach, the multi-percussionist who is going at it at age seventy-one. Ten tracks (from eight different Mercury LPs) are available here on CD for the first time, displaying both his protean leadership and compositional talents - with accompanists as diverse as the Boston Percussion ensemble and vocalist Abbey Lincoln. Throughout this set there are great solos by Kenny Dorham, Booker Little, Hank Mobley, and Sonny Rollins. |

Artist - Sonny Rollins Album - Rollins Plays for Bird Original Release Date: October 5, 1956 Audio CD: July 1, 1991 Label: OJC Quality: MP3@320kbit/s Size: 100 MB Time: 43:26 Добавим немного классики в клуб... Отличный альбом Роллинза! Sonny Rollins, heard in his early prime, performs "I've Grown Accustomed to Your Face," "Kids Know," and a seven-song "Bird Medley" on this CD reissue of a 1956 Prestige LP. Actually, Rollins is only on four of the tunes in the medley and not all of the songs have a close connection with Charlie Parker. Featured in a quintet with trumpeter Kenny Dorham, pianist Wade Legge, bassist George Morrow and drummer Max Roach, Rollins is in fine form although the hard bop music falls slightly short of being essential. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuideREPOST! Gil Evans - New Bottle Old Wine (1988) |

Artist: Gil EvansAlbum: New Bottle, Old Wine Release Date: Apr 9, 1958-May 26, 1958 Genre/Styles: Jazz,Progressive Big Band Label: Blue Note Quality: FLAC(tracks) Size: 244mb + 3% recovery Time: 38:26 Gil Evans' second album as a leader (a World Pacific set that has been reissued by Blue Note) features his reworking of eight jazz classics including "St. Louis Blues," "Lester Leaps In" and "Struttin' with Some Barbecue." Evans' charts utilize three trumpets, three trombones, a french horn, a prominent tuba, one reed player, altoist Cannonball Adderley and a four-piece rhythm section. Most memorable is a classic rendition of "King Porter Stomp" featuring the exuberant altoist Cannonball Adderley, who is the main soloist on most of the selections. Other key voices include Evans' piano, guitarist Chuck Wayne and trumpeter Johnny Coles. This is near-classic music that showed that Gil Evans did not need Miles Davis as a soloist to inspire him to greatness.--Review by Scott Yanow,AMG |

Artist: Mark WhitfieldAlbum: PatriceQuality: mp3@320Kbps Size: 162 MB (scans) Label: Warner Total time: 68:20 All too frequently a young jazz musician slumps on the immediate follow-up CD to a successful debut; fortunately, this is not the case with guitarist Mark Whitfield. Accompanied by veterans Kenny Barron, Ron Carter, and Jack DeJohnette, the leader blisters the old spiritual "Go Down Moses," while he shares his subtle side with clarinetist Alvin Batiste in a gently swinging "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen." Switching to acoustic guitar, he delves into traditional blues with his lively "Baby M's Bayou Blues," while his ambitious "Patrice" features his solo instrument interacting with the vocal harmonies of Group 5. Mark Whitfield made it clear that he was on the jazz scene to stay with this well-conceived release. ~ Ken Dryden, AMG |

Artist: Max RoachAlbum: Parisian SketchesYear: 1960 Label: Gitanes / Universal Music (France) Time: 35:57 Quality: MP3 @320kbps Size: 88mb (RS.com) Includes covers & scans Sublime work from Max Roach -- featuring a group that we think was one of his greatest! The record was recorded in Paris in the early 60s, and players include the Turrentine Brothers -- Stanley and Tommy -- plus Julian Priester on trombone and Bob Boswell on bass. The piano-less ensemble has a fantastic groove -- more soul jazz than most of Roach's work, but also with angular touches of modernism that make the album have a very edgey quality. Stan and Tommy never sounded so great -- and titles include "Nica", "Petit Dejuner", "Liberte", and the extended "Parisian Sketches" suite. - Dustygroove.com |

Artist: Little AxeAlbum: Champagne & GritsLabel: Real World Original Release: 2004 Release Date: 06/24/2008 Genre: Blues Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Size: 83,3+41,8MB Skip McDonald's Little Axe returns for Champagne and Grits, and it could well be the band's finest, most expansive set yet. Little Axe's brand of blues-gospel-dub is probably the most interesting and adventurous of all the projects that attempt to infuse new life into the blues, and Champagne and Grits rivals their debut not only for an outstanding set of tunes, but for sheer sonic experimentation as well. Skip runs the show with plenty of help from producer Adrian Sherwood, and of course Doug Wimbish and Keith LeBlanc are on hand as well. The set starts with a pure acoustic blues, but then enters territory charted only by this band. It's still the blues, but there are gospel-flavored vocals, eerie harmonica, and fantastic dub elements all combined into a singular style. Disembodied vocals and sermons waft in and out of the ether, along with washes of electronica, soulful blues guitar, and wicked basslines. A couple of the tracks venture a bit further into reggae territory (with some help from Junior Delgado), but it still all feels bluesy despite the additional trappings. McDonald knows and respects the past, but he knows how to build on it, not enshrine it. Little Axe is the only band that does what it does, and does it brilliantly. Ancient to the future. Highly recommended. Sean Westergaard, All Music Guide. |

Molly Johnson - Another Day (2002) |

Artist: Molly JohnsonAlbum: Another Day Label: Marquis Year: 2002 Genre: Jazz Vocal Format, bitrate: mp3, 320jb/s Size: 94,1+25,4MB Jazz singer Molly Johnson has done time in both pop and art rock bands and has served as an opening act for such blues and R&B superstars as Ray Charles and B.B. King, so the stylistic range in evidence on her first album for Narada Jazz doesn't come as much of a surprise. She jumps from bracing and jazz-inflected pop/rock (the radio remix of "Another Day") to a piano-based reggae/R&B hybrid ("Ooh Child/Redemption Song") without missing a beat, and slinks her way through torchy blues numbers with equal facility. On the downside, "Celie's Blues" sounds just as anachronistic and politically forced in this version as it did popping up out of nowhere in the middle of The Color Purple, and the fact that Johnson's delivery comes across as little more than a Billie Holiday impression just makes things worse. On the other hand, her version of "Summertime," which was an inevitable song choice given her vocal style, is given new life by the minimalist arrangement of voice, bass, and percussion, and "Red Cardinal" has a fun, jumpy Tin Pan Alley feel. Overall, this album can be confidently recommended to adventurous lovers of vocal jazz. Rick Anderson.AMG. |

Artist: Screamin Jay HawkinsAlbum: Portrait Of A ManLabel: Edsel Year: 1972 Release Date: 1995 Genre: Blues Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Time: 77:49 Size: 85,6+94,1MB Portrait of a Man is a collection of rarities and obscurities from a man whose very career was filled with arcania. Of course, it contains the original version of "I Put a Spell on You," but what Screamin' Jay Hawkins collection doesn't? The main point of the disc is rarities that aren't anywhere else, whether it's a remake of "I Put a Spell on You" or his freak English hit "Heart Attack and Vine." There are more interesting things here than the average Screamin' album, which is both good ("Mountain Jive" ) and bad ("Armpit No. 6"). Either way, it's one of the handful of Hawkins compilations that aren't strict hits collections but are worth hearing. Stephen Thomas Erlewine. AMG. |

Artists: Stephane Grappelli & Diz Disley Album - Live at Corby Festival Hall, May, 1975Label : Storyville Year - 1975, release: 2003 Quality: FLAC; MP3@320kbps Size: 433 mb; 184 mb Total time 78:00 REPOST with new links Stephane Grappelli recorded frequently during the last three decades of his life and previously unissued recordings like this 1975 concert at Corby Festival Hall have continued to turn up. On this occasion the violinist is accompanied by lead guitarist Diz Disley, rhythm guitarist Ike Isaacs and bassist David Moses. The set is fairly typical, concentrating on standards from the 1920s through the 1940s, starting with a chugging but brisk take of "I Can't Believe That You're in Love With Me." The marvelous duet by Grappelli and Disley of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," Grappelli's inventive treatment of "(Back Home Again In) Indiana" and the crowd-pleasing "Sweet Georgia Brown" are among the highlights. It is simply amazing that Stephane Grappelli never seemed to go on autopilot as he played a song for the hundredth (or possibly thousandth) time; this CD is a valuable addition to his already vast discography. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |
