Artist: Paul Horn Album: The Altitude of the Sun/Paul Horn & Nexus Year: 1975-76 Quality: APE & MP3 Size: 381 MB & 183 MB (scans) Label: Black Sun (1989) Total playing: 68:09 For "The Altitude of the Sun", recorded in 1976 and produced by Teo Nacero, Horn introduced to American listeners the compositions, arrangements and performances of Egberto Gismonti, a brilliant guitarist/pianist from Rio de Janeiro who later went on to record several solo albums of his own for the ECM label. For "Paul Horn & Nexus", recorded in 1975, flutist Paul Horn joied forces with Nexus, a touring group of percussionists and musical instrument collectors who hailed from Toronto, Canada. Though inspired improvisations, Horn and his friends created an emotionally potent and stylistically diverse album that colorfully merged strong, earthy rhythms eith cultural influences from South America, Africa, India, Tibet and the U.S.A. -- from the liner notes[b] |

Bo Diddley - His Best (1997) |

 |
Artist: Bo Diddley Album: His Best (The Chess 50th Anniversary Collection) Label: Chess Year: 1997, Release Date: 2001 Genre: Blues Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kb/s Size: 132,6 MB With Bo Diddley's various hits and anthology packages all out of print and the multi-disc deluxe box set out of pocketbook reach for most casual consumers, MCA finally comes up with a 20-track compilation that hits the bull's-eye and makes this rock pioneer's best and most influential work available to everyone. The song list reads like a primer for '60s British R&B and '90s blues bands: "Bo Diddley," "I'm a Man," "Diddley Daddy," "Pretty Thing," "Before You Accuse Me," "Hey! Bo Diddley," "Who Do You Love," "Mona," and "Roadrunner" are the tracks that made the legend and put his sound on the map worldwide. The transfers used on this set are exemplary, the majority of them utilizing masters that have a few extra seconds (or more) appended to the fades, which will cause even hardliners to hear these old standards with fresh ears; especially revelatory are the "long versions" of "I Can Tell" and "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover." If the box set is too big a trigger to pull and you want all of Bo's influential sides in one package, this one should be first-stop shopping of the highest priority. Cub Koda.AMG. |

Magic Slim & The Teardrops - Midnight Blues (2008) |

Artist: Magic Slim & The TeardropsAlbum: Midnight BluesYear: 20088 Genre: Blues Label: Blind Pig Tracks: 13 Format: mp3, Bitrate: @ CBR 320 File Size: 50 MB + 54 MB Magic Slim is the greatest living proponent of the intense, electrified, Mississippi-to-Chicago blues style that spawned much of the music played by modern blues artists and rockers. It's no wonder that Magic Slim and the Teardrops, considered by many to be "the last real Chicago blues band," have become one of the busiest and best-loved blues bands around. As Blues Revue wrote, "Whoever the house band in blues heaven may be, even money says they're wearing out Magic Slim albums trying to get that Teardrops sound down cold."
When word got out that Magic Slim was looking for a few guest Teardrops, the Chicago rhythm & blues community responded with a resounding "Yeah!" Joining him on this incredible set of real Chicago Blues with a dash of Country and a bit of Soul thrown in and produced by Nick Moss are James Cotton, Little Ed, Lonnie Brooks, Otis Clay, Gene Barge, Elvin Bishop and the Chicago Rhythm & Blues Kings horn section. Slim is a national treasure, one of the few true "bluesmen " still around, and at seventy years young he is playing and singing with as much passion and strength as ever. |

Jimmy Witherspoon - Goin’ To Chicago |

 |
Artist: Jimmy Witherspoon Title: Greatest Jazz Concerts (Goin’ To Chicago) Year: 2001 Label: TIM Total Time: 60:03 Format: EAC(WAV)+CUE+LOG + Covers One of the great blues singers of the post-World War II period, Jimmy Witherspoon was also versatile enough to fit comfortably into the jazz world. Witherspoon was born on August 8, 1920, in Gurdon, AR. As a child, he sang in a church choir, and made his debut recordings with Jay McShann for Philo and Mercury in 1945 and 1946. His own first recordings, using McShann's band, resulted in a number one R&B hit in 1949 with "Ain't Nobody's Business, Pts. 1 & 2" on Supreme Records. Live performances of "No Rollin' Blues" and "Big Fine Girl" provided 'Spoon with two more hits in 1950. |

Shirley Horn - May the Music Never End (2003) |

 |
 |
Artist: Shirley Horn Album: May the Music Never End Label: Verve Year: 2003 Genre: Jazz Vocal Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kb/s Size: 128 MB Shirley Horn has made a remarkably strong and consistent series of records for Verve. On May the Music Never End, her 12th record for Verve, there are two big changes: the absence of Horn's longtime musical partner bassist Charles Ables, who passed away in 2001, and the addition of a pianist to take the place of Horn's quite capable playing. Ed Howard fills in admirably on bass and George Mesterhazy does the same on piano, except for on two tracks ("Maybe September" and "This is All I Ask") where Ahmad Jamal takes over. Horn's trademark sound is the sparse, languid torch song, with atmospheric piano chords and her gentle and soulful vocals caressing the notes as she slowly lets them ease into the listener's ear. Most of the album is in this downcast, nocturnal mood: the highlights are her smoldering version of the Jacques Brel-Rod McKuen song "If You Go Away," the bossa nova-influenced "Watch What Happens," and the heartbreaking and bleak "Ill Wind." She also does a very nice job with the Gordon Jenkins-penned "September of My Years"-style ballad "This Is All I Ask" and the emotional "May the Music Never End." These two tracks taken together almost sound like Horn saying goodbye to music and the world of jazz and will really bring a lump to the throat of Horn fans. She breaks up the somber mood with a few swinging tracks: the rollicking take on "Forget Me"; the lightly swinging "Take Love Easy," with some nice Roy Hargrove obbligatos; and the martial "Everything Must Change," which features one of Horn's most dramatic vocals and a wonderful moment three and a half minutes into the song where the tight rhythm bursts open and the band hits a big up-tempo groove with Horn soaring over top. The only real clunker here is her version of the Beatles' "Yesterday," a song that has been done just about every way possible. Here Horn cuts the tempo, adds some atmosphere, and actually manages to over sing the song. Her voice pushes at the outer reaches of her range, but her phrasing is strangely urgent and she sounds old for the first time. It is a rare misstep on an otherwise very good record by one of the great underrated jazz singers. If it is indeed her swan song, then she went out the same way she came in: as a true classic. Tim Sendra. All Music Guide.MAY THE MUSIC NEVER END was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. |

Stephane Grappelli - Tivoli Gardens (1979) |

 |
Artist: Stephane Grappelli Album: Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen, Denmark Label: Original Jazz Classics Year: 1979 Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbit/s Time: 0.44:24 Size: 101 Mb By the time the 71-year-old Stephane Grappelli made this live trio recording with guitarist Joe Pass and bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, his legacy as the greatest of all jazz violinists was firmly in place. Granted, that made him first in a fairly short line of colleagues — other than Joe Venuti and Stuff Smith, who else was there to consider? (Jean-Luc Ponty doesn't count.) But it's hard to imagine another player, regardless of virtuosity, ever conveying the same sense of swing and simple joie de vivre that Grappelli does with virtually every note. Nor does it hurt that his accompanists on this album are among the finest in their fields; Orsted Pedersen plays with a solidity and rhythmic power that are enough to make you forget the absence of a drummer, while Pass slides effortlessly between unobtrusive chordal backup and bravura soloing. The program itself is practically a Grapelli greatest-hits collection — "It's Only a Paper Moon," "Crazy Rhythm," "How Deep Is the Ocean," etc. — which makes this disc a perfect introduction to his art for anyone looking for a good place to begin. Highly recommended. -- Review by Rick Anderson, AMG. |

Sonny Criss - This Is Criss! (1966) |

Artist: Sonny Criss Album: This Is Criss! Year: 1966 Label: Prestige/OJC Time: 39:28 Quality: MP3@320 kbps Size: 94 mb (RS.com) with cover Along with tenor saxophonist Harold Land, altoist Sonny Criss qualifies as one of the most overlooked giants of West Coast jazz. His sound — like most alto players of the bebop and hard bop days — was heavily influenced by Charlie Parker, but Criss still managed to forge an original style featuring a very original melodic bent with loads of bluesy underpinnings. The goods can be optimally previewed on this great Prestige date from 1966. Backed by a trio consisting of pianist Walter Davis, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Alan Dawson, Criss makes fine work of such rare-bird covers as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "When Sunny Gets Blue." There are also some fine originals here, including Criss' own "Steve's Blues" and Davis' classic "Greasy." A perfect start to your Criss collection. - AMG |
