Toumani - Diabate - Djelika (1993) |

 |
 |
Artist: Toumani Diabate Album: Djelika Label: Hannibal Year: 1995 Format: APE & MP3@320 Kbps Size: 260 & 118 MB (scans) Total playing: 51:50 Genre: world fusion, ethno jazz, african jazz The African kora, which is like a cross between a lute and a harp, is one of the world's most beautiful instruments. It isn't as sweet as a harp and, with some of the quick action of a lute or guitar, it is as much a "classical" instrument as it is a "folk" one. On Djelika, Diabate is accompanied by Keletigui Diabate on balafon, an instrument like the xylophone which usually acts as a rhythm section, and Basekou Kouyate on the ngoni, a small instrument thought to be the ancestor of the banjo whose sharp timbre provides a contrast with the kora. The songs are simply beautiful. The title cut is a jazzy piece that slyly quotes the soundtrack "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." Keletogui sits out on "Cheick Oumar Bah," a traditional song in honor of one of Mali's spiritual leaders. It is thoughtful and dignified. "Kandjoura," on the other hand, is just fun, fast, and whimsical. It sounds like it's based on an Afro-pop song. The three musicians, each a virtuoso on his instrument, do a wonderful job providing sonic variety to keep the ear intrigued. Djelika is true African art music and should be sought out not only by fans of "world music," but also by aficionados of jazz and Western classical music. -- by Kurt Keefner, AMG |

Dresch Dudas Mihaly Quartet - Folyondar (1995) |

Artist: Dresch Dudas Mihaly Quartet Album: ...Folyondar... (Live recording) Label: Adyton Year: 1995 Format: APE & MP3@320Kbps Size: 375 & 147 MB (scans) Total playing 73:15 One of the most individual, definitive and exemplary representatives of the Hungarian jazz world. As Garbarek with the Eastern European, and Coltrane with the African music traditions, thus Dresch has taken elements of the authentic traditional music of Transylvania into jazz. His music doesn't work with, it lives on the traditional culture, and consciously speaks for the heritage hidden there. The folk posture which is built into his music gives him a foundation, which offers a secure basis from which he takes flight in jazz and improvisation. His recordings which are primarily instrumental in character, do not simply paraphrase traditional melodies, but the texts can also be heard. His music is enveloping, personal and intimate; strength and faith radiate from it. His work is known the world over. On an international level, he is placed amongst the finest musicians. His musical career began in the seventies. He was the founder and for years a definitve member of the Binder Quintet. His now totally matured, individual taste, can be distinguished upon hearing the first note. From early on, his distinguished playing style and fantastic inprovisational technique, won the attention of the professionals as well as the audience. Later he formed his own quartet, in which all the major figures in Hungarian free and improvisational jazz have done a turn (Istvan Balo, Robert Benko, Istvan Grencso, Felix Lajko and many others). He is a permanent member of Gyorgy Szabados' the leading Hungarian leader of free music, band; of the MAKUZ Ensemble; as well as of the well known Csik (folk music) Ensemble. He regularly takes part in countless international festivals, concerts and jam sessions.' -- Record company press release |

Eric Bibb - Painting Signs (2001) |

Artist - Eric Bibb Album - Painting Signs Release Date - 2001 Label - Rhino Source - Flac Cue - Yes Cover - Yes Genre - Blues Size - 220+100 Mb Ýðèê Áèáá (Eric Bibb) ñ àëüáîìîì "Painting Signs". With Painting Signs, Eric Bibb makes a fine case for blues as a music of introspection, warmth, and supreme nuance. Easily his most mature album to date, Painting Signs continues Bibb's formula of socially aware songs performed from an acutely personal point-of-view; standout tracks "Don't Ever Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down" and a cover of "Hope in a Hopeless World" hammer home his message of individual freedom and the responsibilities that accompany it. (It's no coincidence that Pops Staples, to whom Bibb dedicates this album, once recorded the latter song.)... AMG

Carmen Lundy - Good Morning Kiss |

Artist: Carmen Lundy Album: Good Morning Kiss Label: Justin time Year: 1985 Quality: mp3 @320 Size: 66 + 62 mb Carmen Lundy's debut album was so strong that it's surprising a follow-up was not released domestically for another six years. This excellent effort for the soon-defunct Black Hawk label uses a variety of personnel, including several horn players (trumpeters Jon Faddis, Cecil Bridgewater and/or Earl Gardner, trombonist Steve Turre and altoist Bobby Watson, who provided the arrangements) on four of the eight selections; the other numbers showcase Lundy with a rhythm section including keyboardist Harry Whitaker. Lundy (who puts the right amount of feeling into "Love for Sale") has both a flexible range and the ability to sing beautiful low notes. She is also a talented composer, as she shows by contributing five of the eight songs. Well worth searching for. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Carmen Lundy - Something To Believe In |
Music » Jazz » Vocal Jazz |
 |
 |
Artist: Carmen Lundy Album: Something To Believe In Year: 2003 Label Justin time Quality: mp3 @320 Size: 55+51 mb The message here is one of love. Love for all the good things that we believe in. Love for what makes us happy, and love for what keeps us on track. Carmen Lundy’s rich alto voice brings jazz to her audience with clarity and balance. Her seamless phrasing gives the listener assurance that each lyric’s message rings true. As an artist dedicated to interpreting creative works, Lundy doesn’t dabble in superficial vocal acrobatics. That kind of stunt can be left for those singers, usually found in pop and R&B circles, who only want to show their wares. Lundy’s concern is for the message. She sings these love poems from the heart. Regina Carter and Mark Shim add colorful interludes, while complementing Lundy’s purpose. She and Shim appear as long-lost lovers on “Vu Ja De” with freely interspersed phrases that produce an enchanted conversation. Lundy and Carter exchange glad tidings on “A Gift of Love” to reflect the miracle of birth and how much it means to us all year long. Carmen Lundy is equally at home interpreting golden standards as she is creating new adventures. The common denominator is her high regard for genuineness of spirit. Her love message shines though like a beacon. All about Jazz |
