Raoul Bjorkenheim & Nicky Skopelitis - Revelator (2001) |
Music » Jazz » Fusion |
Artist: Raoul Bjorkenheim and Nicky Skopelitis Album: Revelator Format: APE & MP3@320Kbps Size: 336 & 127 MB (scans) Label: Innerhythm Total playing: 57:20 Genre: fusion, experimental Those familiar with guitarist Raoul Bjorkenheim from his work with the harder-edged Krakatau and with guitarist Nicky Skopelitis from his work with the very soft-edged CyberOctave label may be surprised by what they hear on this duo album. Featuring the percussion talents of Bill Buchen and the spiritual oversight of bassist Bill Laswell (credited here with "sounds"), Revelator delivers mainly lush, exotic grooves that are consistently both easy on the ear and sonically challenging. It would be easy to let these ambient soundscapes fade into the background, but then you'd miss the complexities -- the way Bjorkeheim's bowed guitar snakes around until Buchen's tabla enters to clear the way for Skopelitis' Delta blues figures on "Epiphany" or the gorgeously polytonal "Fresh Meat and Roses." Those who enjoyed Laswell's Hear No Evil will find a lot to like here, as will fans of the first Robert Fripp and Andy Summers collaboration. Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson, AMG |

Jeri Brown - Mirage |

Artist: Jeri Brown Album: Mirage Label: Justin Time Year: 1994 Quality: mp3 @ 256 Size: 71+63 mb On her first recording as a jazz singer, Jeri Brown really stretches herself. Joined by pianist Fred Hersch and bassist Daniel Lessard, Brown interprets everything from a swinging "No Moon at All," "Good Bait," and "On the Sunny Side of the Street" to "The Look of Love" and a long free improvisation duet with Hersch called "Ten Twenty" (after its length). Brown is best when she is caressing a warm ballad, for on the freer material her singing gets quite abrasive and is sometimes difficult to take. She would temper her excesses in future years and become one of the top jazz singers around, so Mirage is mostly recommended as the beginning point for this top-notch singer. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Craig Pilo - Just Play (2007) |

Artist: Craig Pilo Album: Just Play Label: Rue De La Harpe Original Year: 2007 Genre: Jazz Fusion Format/Bitrate: MP3/320 Size: 100mb+39mb "Drummer Craig Pilo is kept busy via his concert tours with pop and rock icons Frankie Valli and Edgar Winter. Yet this jazz-fusion studio date signifies an insightful glimpse into his enviable chops and overall musicality. With an attractive blend of originals, jazz standards, and pieces by Trane and Freddie Hubbard, the drummer generates pop, zip and fluid movement throughout. Featuring veteran session artists such as keyboardist Mitchel Forman, bassist Tom Kennedy and others, the various lineups convey a tightly-organized and thoroughly, in-the-pocket chemistry. Constructed upon largely, melodic pieces and groove-oriented rhythmic maneuvers, Forman s Fender Rhodes piano work serves as the axis on several tracks. They execute a mid-tempo, Latin-jazz spin on Autumn Leaves, while projecting a contempo jazz outlook with saxophonist Roman Dudok s appearance on various works. On Hubbard s modern jazz classic Red Clay, the saxophonist judiciously improvises within the primary melody, firmed-up by Pilo s solid and throttling backbeats. Kennedy renders a literal reading of Jaco Pastorius Teen Town, as the trio s interpretation of Softly As In A Morning Sunrise, surfaces as a dreamy ballad, spiced-up with a distinct edge. No frills or revelations here! It s more about a consortium of top-caliber musicians infusing their broad music vernaculars into a potpourri of jazz-tinged works that intimate a jubilant state-of-affairs. Everything seems to click rather naturally here." ~ Glenn Astarita, EJazz News |

Keely Smith - Keely Swings Basie Style...With Strings |

Artist - Keely Smith Album - Keely Swings Basie Style...With Strings Label - Concord Year - 2002 Quality - MP3@320 kbps Size - 154 mb Total time - 68:53 The swing revival was custom made for singers like Keely Smith. Keely Swings Basie Style...With Strings follows 2000's Swing, Swing, Swing and 2001's Grammy-nominated Keely Sings Sinatra, capping off a trilogy of lovingly performed classic jazz. Smith's backward glance, however, isn't just pure nostalgia. Keely Swings Basie Style, for instance, begins with Count Basie-style arrangements and then applies them to a number of songs not necessarily associated with the bandleader. The addition of strings provides another distinctive layer. Smith begins with "April in Paris" and brings her warm vocals to bear on a number of other classics, including "Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe" and "How High the Moon." There's a particularly lovely take on "Mood Indigo" and a bouncy version of "Cherokee (Indian Love Song)." Smith balances these standards with spry contemporary fare like "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)" and "Can't Take My Eyes off of You." The closing number offers something of a surprise, beginning with "The House I Live In" and then flowing into "Star Spangled Banner," ending the album on a patriotic note. The combination of tasteful arrangements, good song choices, and Smith's pleasing vocals guarantees that fans will warmly embrace Keely Swings Basie Style. ~ Ronnie D.
