Deborah Coleman - Soul be it! |

Artist: Deborah Brown Abum: Soul Be It! Label: Blind Pig Recorded at Sierra Nevada Brewery, Chico, CA Quality: mp3@256 Size:53+50 mb The first live album from up-and-coming blues guitarist and singer Deborah Coleman is a sheer delight, chock-full of evidence that someday she'll be considered one of the brightest stars in blues. Soul Be It! starts off nice and easy, with the uptempo-yet-relaxed "Brick." That's just to warm you up, however. By the time "I'm a Woman" rolls around, Coleman's guitar playing catches fire. As for her voice, it's more like Turkish coffee than hot chocolate; there's a richness to her singing that a connoisseur will appreciate. The 12-minute final track, "Goodbye Misery," is a revelation: in a mere eight tracks, Coleman takes her listeners from the opening bars (the bars' opening?) at 9 p.m. all the way to 2 in the morning, with relentless energy. Coleman has to be one of the hardest-working women in the business; she mentions being home perhaps two weeks out of the year. All her work pays off in this live recording, which is as refined as a studio performance, but has that extra kick only a live show can deliver. ~ Genevieve Williams |

The obscure music on this CD has rarely been reissued. Pianist Wynton Kelly is heard with a trio (Franklin Skeete or Oscar Pettiford on bass and drummer Lee Abrams) at the age of 19 when he was working as an accompanist for Dinah Washington. Featured on this recording a year before he joined Dizzy Gillespie and seven years before his next date as a leader, Kelly in 1951 was already long on his way to achieving his own sound. Influenced most by Bud Powell but also displaying some of the joy of Teddy Wilson's style along with his own chord voicings, Kelly gives listeners no hints on this enjoyable CD (which has two complete sessions plus three alternate takes) that he was still a teenager. [Originally released in 1951, Piano Interpretations was reissued on an import-only Japanese CD in 2000.] ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Charlie Christian-The Genius Of The Electric Guitar (1990) |

 |
Artist: Charlie Christian Album: The Genius Of The Electric Guitar(1990) Genre: Jazz Label: Columbia Format: MP3@320 Kbp/s Size: 115 Mb Time: 43.86' Covers: Yes AMG Rating: Christian revolutionized the guitar by giving it a solo voice and a fresh, fluent personality to go along with it. Although he never lived to see the full-flowering bebop movement, Christian's sophisticated harmonic improvisations sowed the seeds of that heady musical revolution. Perhaps more impressively, he accomplished all this in the span of less than three years, before succumbing to tuberculosis at age 25. |

Headhunters - Return of the Headhunters (1998) |

Artist: The Headhunters Album: Return of the Headhunters Format: APE & MP3 (320) Size: 360 & 120 MB (scans) Label: Verve Forecast Total playing: 54:02 After a two-decade-long hiatus, Herbie Hancock's Headhunters returned to action in 1998 with their funk groove pretty much intact, allowing for some technological and stylistic updating. The core of the band -- the too-long-neglected Bennie Maupin (saxes, bass clarinet), Paul Jackson (bass), Bill Summers (percussion), and the group's second drummer Mike Clark -- still has the complex funk telepathic interplay down pat, though occasionally the rhythms are simplified for contemporary audiences. Hancock himself only appears on four tracks, where he tries to comp and stomp out on latter-day digital instruments (alas, he doesn't quite generate the same superfunky feeling that he once could on analog clavinets, Fender-Rhodes pianos and ARP synths). Billy Childs fills the keyboard chair in more genteel fashion on the other six tracks, with occasional help from Patrice Rushen, Mark Goodman and Darrell Smith. The main hangup here is that the revived Headhunters didn't come up with much memorable material, the strongest tracks being the back-to-1974 retro workout "Funk Hunter," and the rhythmically tricky "Kwanzaa," and "Watch Your Back," which features the obligatory rap honoring elder statesmen of music (strange how reverential the nominally rebellious younger set often can be). ~ Richard S. Alberta Hunter, Lucille Hegamin, Victoria Spivey - Songs We Taught Your Mother |

Artists: Alberta Hunter, Lucille Hegamin, Victoria Spivey Album: Songs We Taught Your Mother Year: 1961 Label: Bluesville / Original Blues Classics Time: 41:46 Quality: mp3 320Kbps Size: 88,71 Mb Although Alberta Hunter, who had briefly come out of retirement, gets first billing on this CD reissue, in reality she shares the spotlight with two other veterans of the 1920s: Lucille Hegamin and Victoria Spivey. Each of the singers is featured on four songs apiece while backed by such top players as clarinetist Buster Bailey, trombonist J.C. Higginbottham, and Cliff Jackson or Willie "The Lion" Smith on piano. Hunter is in superior form on such numbers as "You Gotta Reap Just What You Sow" and "I Got a Mind to Ramble," although she would soon be out of music for another 15 years, continuing her work as a nurse. Hegamin (who had not recorded since 1932) was having a brief last hurrah, despite sounding good, and Spivey, reviving her "Black Snake Blues," would soon be launching her own Spivey label. This is a historic and enjoyable set recommended to both classic jazz and blues collectors. ( By Scott Yanow) |

Fred Wesley - Swing & Be Funky |

Artist: Fred Wesley Album: Swing & Be Funky Genre: Jazz Label: Minor Music Format: Mp3@320Kb/s Size: 175Mb Time: 76:41' Fred Wesley (born July 4, 1943) is an American jazz and funk trombonist, best known for his work with James Brown in the 1960s and 1970s. Wesley was born in Columbus, Georgia, the son of a high school teacher and big band leader. During the 1960s and 1970s he was a pivotal member of James Brown's bands, playing on many hit recordings including "Say it Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud", "Mother Popcorn" and co-writing tunes such as "Hot Pants". His slippery riffs and pungent, precise solos, complementing those of saxophonist Maceo Parker, gave Brown's R&B, soul, and funk tunes their instrumental punch. In the 1970s he also served as band leader and musical director of Brown's band the J.B.'s and did much of the composing and arranging for the group. He left Brown's band in 1975 and spent several years playing with George Clinton's various Parliament/Funkadelic projects, even recording a couple of albums as the leader of a spin-off group, The Horny Horns. |

Omar Sosa - Afreecanos |

Artist: Omar Soa Album: Afreecanos Original Release Date: February 12, 2008 Label: Ota Records Format: mp3 256 kbps Size: 102 MB Afreecanos. Rooted in Africa. Omar Sosa’s new studio album brings together musicians from Africa, Cuba, Brazil, and France to celebrate the rich heritage of African music in jazz and Latin music. Mr. Sosa’s approach takes folkloric elements from Africa and the Americas, combines them with his Afro-Cuban roots, and brings them all forward into a contemporary jazz expression. For the first time since his arrangements on Spirit Of The Roots and Prietos, Mr. Sosa uses a horn section, and Afreecanos features a variety of traditional and modern flute sounds. The recording also features kora, ngoni, guitar-sitar, and a variety of folkloric percussion instruments, including batá, timbales, kongoman, m’bira, and talking drum. Featured on the recording are Cuban drummer Julio Barreto, Mozambican electric bassist Childo Tomas, Senegalese vocalist Mola Sylla, Cuban folkloric master Lázaro Galarraga, Cuban woodwind player Leandro Saint-Hill, French trumpet player Stéphane Belmondo, and French multi-instrumentalist Christophe Disco Minck. Also featured are Cuban timbal master Orestes Vilató, Malian percussionist Baba Sissoko, Malian flute player Ali Wague, and Senegalese kora player Ali Boulo Santo, et al. Mr. Sosa has taken Afro-Cuban musical forms, like the rumba, and arranged them for African musicians and African instruments... releasing these forms from the traditional Afro-Cuban clave... and opening them to innovative interpretations... combining the fokloric with the contemporary, the ancestral with the urban. Throughout the album we hear folkloric elements infusing a modern jazz idiom, including spirit vocals and percussion from Africa, Cuba, and Brazil. The sound is lush and orchestral. Afreecanos is produced by Paris-based drummer Steve Argüelles, who also produced Mr. Sosa’s 2004 GRAMMY-nominated recording, Mulatos. Afreecanos was recorded at Fattoria Musica in Osnabrück, Germany, with additional recording in Paris and San Francisco. The recording is dedicated to the late Cuban percussion masters, Pancho Quinto and Angá Diaz. |
