Pee Wee Crayton - Early hour blues |
Music » Blues » Modern electric blues |
 |
 |
Artist: Pee Wee Crayton Album: Early hour blues Label: Blind Pig Year: 1999 Quality: MP3@256 kbit/s + covers Size: 85 mb A West Coast blues guitar hero, Crayton died shortly after these sessions, done primarily with Rod and Honey Piazza's band, or with jazz pianist Llew Matthews' quartet. The two dates show Crayton could do it all. Jump blues, hard or straight blues, and boogie were all easily played. It's that unmistakable T-Bone Walker influence, a stinging, swinging single line or chunky, chortling chord progressions that made Crayton stand out among the crowded blues guitar landscape. He was a one-of-a kind player, and this CD is not only his final testament, but a solid exclamation point on the career of a true American music legend. Crayton also proved to be a pretty good singer. His soulful rendering of the hit "Send for Me" is sincere and believable. "Barefootin'" might be a throwaway, but he really sends up the B.B. King evergreen "When I'm Wrong." Steaming instrumentals with big horn charts swing hard as on "You Know Yeah," Eddie Taylor's "E.T. Blues," "Red Rose Boogie," and the short horn-fired rave-up "Head'n'Home." The Piazzas and Matthews really know how to support a star, and their work is as credible as any. Additional kudos to Crayton's wife, Esther, who wrote six of these 11 cuts, and was always a major factor in his repertoire. On some of his solos, Crayton is astounding; on the rest, his guitar is merely spectacular. Though 14 years late (Crayton died in 1985) and only 45 minutes short on this CD, this is a precious document of one of originals of blues guitar, and a reminder that although he was relatively obscure, he had many fans who knew what the real deal was. For blues scholars, this is an artist, like Freddie King, Otis Rush, and T-Bone, well worth studying and relishing. |

Benny Goodman - Live at Berlin 1980 |

Artist - Benny Goodman Album - Live at Berlin 1980 Label - TCB Year - 1980, release - 2002 Quality - MP3@320 kbps Size - 85,8 mb Total time - 57:49 This Benny Goodman live CD is a bit of a sleeper in his vast discography. Before leaving for Germany in the fall of 1980, he took only one musician with him, pianist Don Haas, who had joined the clarinetist earlier in the year. He then auditioned and recruited guitarist Harry Pepl, bassist Peter Witte and drummer Charly Antolini; in spite of the language barrier (none of them spoke English), Goodman was quickly convinced of their abilities and proceeded to play two shows with them on consecutive nights in Berlin. According to noted Goodman discographer Russell Connor, Goodman was so pleased with the results that he considered issuing an LP at the time, but was dissuaded by potential producers since the concerts had been broadcast on both television and radio in Europe and were widely taped by collectors. Among the highlights of the shows are old favorites like "Avalon," "Airmail Special," a rousing "Sing, Sing Sing!" (showcasing Antolini) and "Harry Pepl's Blues" (in which Pepl shows a definite Wes Montgomery influence, but in a swing setting). Goodman is at the top of his game throughout the CD; the release of this valuable concert material was long overdue. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |

Artist: Buck Clayton Album: A Swingin' Dream Recording Date:1988 Label:Stash Type:Live Genre:Jazz Format:APE Size:190(2)+39,4Mb Total trime - 69:26 Трубач, композитор Бак Клэйтон (Buck Clayton) и его бэнд с концертным альбомом «A Swingin Dream». Этот состав музыкантов он собрал уже после своей болезни и на мой взгляд запись получилась очень удачной. About Buck Clayton on this site. The premise for this CD is so logical that it is surprising (and disappointing) that only one recording resulted. Trumpeter Buck Clayton was forced to retire due to lip problems in the late '60s, but he had always been a talented arranger. Finally, in the mid-'80s, he put together a big band to play some new charts he had written. This 13-piece unit has such fine players as trumpeters Spanky Davis and Johnny Letman, trombonist Dan Barrett, altoist Chuck Wilson, baritonist Joe Temperley, guitarist Chris Flory and drummer Mel Lewis, among others. "Avenue C" is the only older tune included on this swinging date; Clayton's big band should have recorded many more sessions. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |

Artist: Chuck Loeb Album: The Love Song Collection Release Date:2007 Label:Shanachie Type:Compilation Genre:Jazz Format:Flac Size:190+174Mb About Chuck Loeb on this site. One of the most versatile of all East Coast contemporary jazz guitarists, Chuck Loeb was equally inspired to play screaming fusion as he was to write hip radio-ready smooth jazz hits and sweet candlelit gems. This nice collection definitely focuses on the latter, highlighting his low-key acoustic and electric playing on songs culled from his seven Shanachie releases from 1996-2005.... Harry James & His Orchestra - 1937-1939 |

Artist: Harry James Album: Classics 1937-1939 Label:Classics Year: 1996 Genre: Jazz, Big Band Format, bitrate: MP3@192 kbps Time: 62:55 Size: 86.2 Mb Trumpeter Harry James was very consistent in his musical tastes throughout his career. This CD, which has the first 22 selections that James recorded as a leader, starts off with eight numbers in which the trumpeter (still a Benny Goodman sideman at the time) uses many of Count Basie's top sidemen (including trombonist-arranger Eddie Durham, tenor saxophonist Herschel Evans and singer Helen Humes) for swinging performances highlighted by "Life Goes to a Party" and "One O'Clock Jump"; James' bands (particularly from the 1950s on) would often sound like a duplicate of Basie's. In addition, this CD has four tunes from 1938 in which James mostly uses Goodman players (plus baritonist Harry Carney), and he is also heard on the first six numbers by his big band (including "Two O'Clock Jump" and his earliest recording of his theme "Ciribiribin"). However, the hottest performances are four numbers in which James is backed by a boogie-woogie trio featuring either Pete Johnson or Albert Ammons on piano. This enjoyable CD is full of many examples of James' hot swing trumpet and is easily recommended to swing fans. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Artist: Harry James & His Orchestra Album: Two O'Clock Jump/Trumpet Blues And Cantabile Label:Documents Classics Year: 2006 Genre:Jazz, Big Band Format, bitrate: MP3@192 kbps Time: 61:14 57:14 Size: 86.4+82.9 Mb If you are a fan of Harry James, this is likely a recording you'll want to find unless you own them already. Still, having all four of these original recordings -- Two O'Clock Jump/Trumpet Blues And Cantabile -- is a treat. Though well beyond his initial foray into big-band swing jazz, but not past his prime, James is here on two CDs that document concert dates 1938-1952. The recordings are full, rich and clean, and hard to deny as to their high quality. A recommended item of more than just curio cabinet status, it's definitely one for nostalgia buffs, and the ages. |
