Manhattan Transfer - Couldn't Be Hotter |
Swing, Vocal Jazz |
 |
 |
Artist: The Manhattan Transfer Album: Couldn't Be Hotter Year: 2000 Release: 2003 Label: Telarc Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 kbps Time: 1:16:37 Size: 179 MB + additional links from Mr. leondm (MP3,320) - 95 mb + 60 mb All Music Guide Rating: Although Manhattan Transfer have released other live albums, the collections were scattershot affairs that mainly focused on their '80s pop experiments or Vocalese-era jazz numbers that never really coalesced into one solid, perfectly performed concert recording. Twenty-eight years after their debut album, Manhattan Transfer finally capture the magic of their live performances on disc with the appropriately titled Couldn't Be Hotter. This generous 16-track collection, culled from concerts recorded at Tokyo's Orchard Hall in 2000, focuses on the pure vocal jazz that initially brought attention to the group back in the early '70s. With the exception of the 1980 pop hit "Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone," the Transfer load the program with jazz and swing selections, most of which were featured on their two studio releases Swing and Spirit of St. Louis. The quartet takes command of the stage immediately with Louis Armstrong's "Old Man Mose," as Tim Hauser leads a looser and more exciting version than the one heard on the 78 rpm-inspired Spirit of St. Louis. The Transfer have always been one of the most successful purveyors of vocalese (writing lyrics to fit previously recorded instrumental solos), and Cheryl Bentyne gives a fine example of this art as she deftly sings Jon Hendricks' lyrics in "Clouds," capturing almost every instrumental nuance of the original Django Reinhardt solo. Each member of the group is highlighted throughout the disc, but they truly come alive when working together as a vocal quartet, as on "Sing Moten's Swing," or when lively interacting with each other as they do throughout the Cajun-beat of "Stompin' at Mahogany Hall." What separates the Transfer from other similar jazz vocal groups is the fact that they utilize their voices as actual instruments instead of just singing, sometimes sounding like a solo muted trumpet or like a full saxophone section when vocalizing together. That is why they are at their peak when performing vocal jazz or jazz-related material instead of the pop music excursions that never really suited them well, like "Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone." Although a crowd-pleaser, the pop song detracts from the tone set by the preceding songs and features a half-hearted vocal effort as if it were an obligatory addition to the set list. However, that one minor flaw should not diminish the fact that, with its consistent theme, excellent pacing, and impeccable performances, Couldn't Be Hotter documents Manhattan Transfer at their vocal best. Art Tatum - Hold that Tiger! Original Recordings 1933-1940 (2002) |

 |
Artist: Art Tatum Album: Hold that Tiger! Original Recordings 1933-1940 Label: Naxos Jazz Legends Years: 2002 Quality: MP3@256kb/s Size: 62.9+43.7 mb Total time: 56:50 Probably all of the superlatives have been used at one time or another to describe the playing of Art Tatum. His technical ability on the piano has surely never been equalled, let alone surpassed. Possibly the only pianists to come anywhere near in terms of sheer mastery of the instrument have been, at their very best, Bud Powell and Oscar Peterson. Styles and tastes have certainly changed but Tatum remains a colossus of modern music. The clarity of his up tempo playing is absolutely awe-inspiring and his melodic and harmonic invention beggar description in terms of facility and creativity. This disc is a compilation of solo performances, which arguably show Tatum at his best. There are many recordings available which feature the trio and also illustrate the pianist's undeniable talent as an accompanist but there is always the feeling that he is somewhat hampered by the presence of other musicians, no matter how talented they might be. There is a certain abandon in his best solo recordings that never seems to be there even with players of exceptional ability whether it be a virtuosic clarinettist such as Buddy De Franco or a more rhapsodic interpreter such as Ben Webster. The selections here contain many of the pianist's warhorses including the title track, " Tea For Two," "Get Happy" and two truly excellent versions of George Gershwin's "Liza". All of Art Tatum's trademark devices are present including sudden tempo changes, outrageous melodic sequences and spiralling arabesques . This is an essential for any lover of the piano in Jazz and is doubly attractive because of the low price and excellent presentation. ~ Dick Stafford |

1985: Chet Baker Trio - Chet's Choice |

Artist: Chet Baker Album: Chet's Choice Year: 1985 Label: Criss Cross Time: 63:53 Quality: MP3 @320kbps Size: 154mb (RS.com) with 5% file recovery Includes covers and scans One of the best settings for trumpeter Chet Baker was when he was accompanied by a guitar-bass duo. On this excellent Criss Cross CD, Baker is joined by guitarist Philip Catherine and bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse on a variety of high-quality standards that include such songs as "If I Should Lose You," Horace Silver's "Doodlin'," "Conception" and "Love for Sale." A special treat is hearing the talented but forgotten Bob Zieff's "Sad Walk." This is one of Baker's better albums from his later period. ~ AMG |

Ann Burton - Blue Burton |

Artist: Ann Burton Album: Blue Burton Year: 1999 Label: Epic Size: 90.62 mb Quality: mp3, 320 kb/s Much of one's character can be explained by origin, youth and upbringing. Ann Burton is no exception. Whoever looks further at the life and career of the Dutch singer and listens to the superb records she made will understand why her first album, and the book published in 1999 carry the significant title BLUE BURTON. The youth of Johanna 'Ansje' Rafalowicz, born on march 4th , 1933 in Amsterdam is for a great part darkened by the second world war. She had to go into hiding because of her Jewish descent, not to get caught by the German occupiers. And in the years after the liberation of Holland the sun still won't shine in Ansje's life. She perpetually clashes with her mother, which eventually leads to her being taken under the wings of a social welfare worker. Her dawning love for music is not without consequence: she becomes a singer with a combo, goes abroad, and soon adopts as her stage name Ann Burton. |

McCoy Tyner - Remembering John |

Artist: McCoy Tyner Album: Remembering John Label: Enja Records Year: 1991 Genre: Jazz, Piano Format, bitrate: mp3@320Kbps Time: 57:41 min Size: 127 Mb For this tribute to John Coltrane (which he performs with bassist Avery Sharpe and drummer Aaron Scott), pianist McCoy Tyner performs some offbeat material including 'Trane pieces that preceded his stay with the classic quartet (such as "Giant Steps") plus a few unrelated standards (including "In Walked Bud" and "Good Morning Heartache"). Six of the nine selections were composed by Coltrane and, although this was his umpteenth 'Trane tribute, McCoy Tyner still sounds enthusiastic and adventurous performing the timeless music. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Artist: Ann Burton Album: Ballads & Burton Year: 1999 Label: Epic Size: 85.62 mb Quality: mp3, 320 kb/s Sublime ballad work from Dutch vocalist Ann Burton -- sung with near-invisible accompaniment from the Louis Van Dyke trio! Van Dyke's got an especially tender touch on the keys -- one that hangs in air with great space between the notes -- a mode that's simply perfect for Ann's ethereal way of putting over a tune! Tracks are mostly familiar standards, but they've got a fragile approach here that makes them sound especially fresh -- and a few tracks feature some especially nice tenor sax work from Rudy Brink. |
