Phil Woods - Plays the music of Jim McNeely
Artist: Phil Woods
Album: Plays the music of Jim McNeely
Year: 1995
Label: TCB
Quality: mp3 @320 kbps
Size: 144 mb

Jim McNeely is well-known for his stellar big-band writing, but this album affords the pleasure of hearing his compositions in a small-group setting. And not just any small group, but the Phil Woods Quintet, among the tightest and most road-hardened post-bop units in existence. McNeely occupied the band's piano chair through much of the '90s. While he's the man of the hour in terms of this album's content, no special effort is made to single out his piano presence. He usually solos third in the rotation, after altoist/leader Woods and trumpeter Brian Lynch, although both horn players take a break on the penultimate track, a beautiful trio feature titled "New Waltz." This track also features bassist Steve Gilmore's only solo of the set. (Drummer Bill Goodwin doubled as producer, as is often the case on Woods' records.) McNeely's compositions are by no means simple, but they're never abstract or inaccessible. They tend to have long forms, with vamp-like modal sections and busier strings of boppish chord changes alternating to create tension and release. These are exactly the kind of charts to suit the Phil Woods Quintet, with its rhythmic drive and uncanny ability to sound like a little big band. Every tune is a winner, but standouts include the opening track "A Perfect Six," which would later appear on McNeely's 2001 effort Group Therapy in an arrangement for ten-piece band, and the closing track "Don't Even Ask," which begins with a sharp-edged bass/alto unison line and then blossoms continually over the course of 11-plus minutes. ~ David R. Eric Bibb - Good Stuff (1997)

Artist: Eric Bibb & Needed Time
     Album: Good Stuff
     Format: FLAC & mp3 (320k/s)
     Size: 299 & 125 MB (scans)
     Label: Opus 3 (HDCD)
     Total playing: 56:28

Eric Bibb's debut album, Good Stuff, is a clever fusion of contemporary folk and classic country-blues and classic gospel that emphasizes the guitarist's skill at fusing genres, as well as his flair for writing solid bluesy songs. Not all of the material really catches hold, but it all shows promise, and the very best moments on the record confirm that he's one of the more intriguing new bluesmen in the late '90s. ~ Thom Owens, AMG

Donald Byrd - Jazz Lab (1957)

     Artist: Donald Byrd, Gigy Gryce
     Album: Jazz Lab
     Label: Jubilee
     Year: 1957
     Genre: Jazz
     Format, Bitrate: mp3, 320bps
     Time: 39 min
     Size: 54 MB

Wonderful work from the team of Donald Byrd and Gigi Gryce! Byrd is at his youthful best here -- blowing with a soulful imagination that's surprising, given his young age, and honed to a modern edge by the arrangements of Gryce. Conversely, Gryce's tone on the alto is fantastic -- less measured than on other albums, and perhaps given a bit more of a gutsy push by his work here with Byrd. Of course, the rest of the group helps, too -- and with Art Taylor on drums, Tommy Flanagan on piano, and Wendell Marshall on bass, the whole set grooves nicely! Titles include "Little Niles", "Sans Souci", "Nica's Tempo", and "Speculation". (6 eye logo pressing with deep groove. Cover has seam splitting, remnants of a sticker, a small peeled spot, staining on the back, and a small bit of the upper corner on the opening has worn away.) © 1996-2008, Dusty Groove America, Inc.

Perhaps his greatest album as a leader. Immaculate trombone solos. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide

Frank Rosolino was one of the all time greats in the world of jazz trombone. Born in Detroit in 1926, he played in the bands of, among others, Gene Krupa and Stan Kenton. His first notoriety came with the vocal "Lemon Drop" with Krupa's band, but it was with the Kenton band that he got his biggest public notice. After leaving Kenton, he eventually settled into the LA/Hollywood scene, making a living in the studios as well as outside jazz dates. He was a regular in Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars, as well as with many of Marty Paich's recordings, and in his later years was heard with the group Supersax as well as appearing on the Quincy Jones version of "Bluesette". Others he recorded with include Benny Carter, Mel Torme, Louie Bellson, Helen Humes, Zoot Sims and many more.

Columbia Records and Sony Music never did too well by their catalog of Frank Sinatra's music, at least in the way of single-disc compilations. There was the 12-CD complete set, of course, and the four-CD best-of that complete set, both from the early '90s, which were aimed at serious, dedicated fans, but except for the very flawed 16 Most Requested Songs, there wasn't a genuinely good single-CD overview for the casual listener to get his first taste of at least the most popular songs from this most underrated phase of Sinatra's career. Sings His Greatest Hits solved that problem and then some. It's a terrific single-disc collection containing 18 of the singer's best-known songs from his time at Columbia, including "April in Paris," "Night and Day," and "Nancy," of which "Body and Soul" and "Laura" are alternate takes. This CD (which also came out in a limited-edition gold CD version) is a great sampler and introduction for the curious listener who doesn't want to invest in any of the more comprehensive sets, although once one gets hooked -- assuming one does -- those bigger sets will seem a logical next step. ~ Bruce Eder & Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music

Michael Bublé - Totally Bublé (2003)

     Artist: Michael Bublé
     Album: Totally Bublé
     Label: DRG
     Year: 2003
     Genre: Swing
     Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s
     Size: 38,2MB

After the success of Michael Bublй's self-titled debut, DRG belatedly released this jazzy soundtrack from the 2001 film Totally Blonde in which Bublй had a co-starring role as a nightclub singer. Capitalizing on Bublй's newfound stardom, DRG basically ignores the music's connection to the film by altering the title and putting a shot of Bublй on the cover making it appear as if this was a proper Michael Bublй release. The slight misrepresentation was not lost on Bublй who has stated on his website that he did not want these songs released but that it was out of his control. In reality, the disc is not the complete disaster he makes it out to be, but buyers should be wary of the disc and understand what it is they are purchasing. The film's director, Andrew Van Slee, wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on this short, energetic disc while an as-yet unsigned Bublй does his best to breathe some life into these imitation swing-style songs. As with the standards he interpreted on his debut disc, Bublй sounds in command and comfortable fronting these slight tunes, making the songs sound much more interesting than they really are. Throughout most of the tracks Bublй channels his inner Sinatra in a way that is complementary but not imitative, as in the swagger of the disc's opening number, "That's How It Goes," where his Frank-ish vocals get revved up and zoom into a final Bobby Darin growl. His youthfulness does show through on the ballad "Anyone to Love," a boozy ode to losing at love in which Bublй's vocals lack the experience needed to truly portray the song's older, depressed character, but that is his only vocal misstep throughout these seven audio tracks. Although one could understand why Bublй would not want these early recordings to sit beside his stellar debut in CD bins, he shouldn't be too concerned as Totally Bublй does show what this gifted vocalist can do with even second-rate material. George Gee Big Band - Settin' the Pace (2004)     Artist: George Gee Big Band
     Album: Settin' the Pace
     Label: Gjazz Records
     Year: 2004
     Genre: Jazz, Big Band
     Format, bitrate: MP3@192 kbps
     Time: 59:20
     Size: 83.9 Mb

George Gee has been leading his swingin' big band out of New York, spreading the classic sound of jazz to dancers and listeners all over the world, for more than two decades. The music on Settin' The Pace was recorded following a triumphant appearance by the band, under the direction of special guest Frank Foster, at the city's premiere jazz venue, Birdland. The group brought the spirit inspired by that live date into the studio the next day and the result is one of the most exciting big band records recorded in years. Frank Foster says it best when he notes that, "Thanks to the dedication and persistence of leaders like George Gee - swing, happy swing - will be around for a long, long time." Thanks to Frank Foster, Carla Cook, George Gee and all the swingin' men in his big band the music is surely still alive and well in the 21st Century.
Many labels come to mind for George Gee's fourth album and first studio session, Settin' the Pace (GJazz): straightahead, neoswing, dance band-and none are pejorative. Gee can boast a tight, highly responsive, 17-piece unit-four trumpets, four trombones, five saxes and four in the rhythm section-made even more responsive with tenor saxophonist Frank Foster guiding them. Adding to the good news: 11 of the 12 tunes are Foster's arrangements. Highlights include Lance Bryant's tenor sax solo on "In a Sentimental Mood," Joe Cohn's guitar statements on "Ready Now That You Are GG" and flugelhornist Walt Szymanski's solo on the same track. Later, Szymanski shows his trumpet chops on "When Your Lover Has Gone," both in the art of playing pure melody and improvising. As lead trumpeter, his presence is felt throughout the album. Vocalist Carla Cook has three offerings but scores highest with "The Very Thought of You." It's the only one in her lower warmer range, and that's where the Grammy nominee belongs. ~ Harvey Siders, JazzTimes Magazine

Repost with additional link from M-r canito

After years of big band experimentation, Stan Kenton seemed to settle into a more grounded groove on 1956's In Hi-Fi. To his credit, Kenton did keep things swinging before, even in the midst of high brow bombast like the string-laden, 39 piece Innovations in Modern Music orchestra and numerous jazz meets Stravinsky projects. This uncanny balance of flow and brains came out of Kenton's own tempered direction and fine contributions by the likes of arranger Pete Rugolo, trumpeter Shorty Rogers, alto saxophonist Art Pepper, and singers Anita O'Day and June Christy. Thanks to a seamless mix of dazzling charts and liberal doses of Lunceford and Ellington-inspired swing, the marriage certainly works on Kenton in Hi-Fi. Old hits like "Eager Beaver" and "Artistry In Boogie" sparkle in the warm glow of '50s stereo technology, while fiery renditions of "Lover" and "The Peanut Vendor" show the famous muscle of the Kenton band. With the stellar playing of tenor saxophonist Vido Musso, trumpeter Pete Candoli, and drummer Mel Lewis to look forward to, one can see why this album was not only one of Kenton's most popular releases, but a critical success as well. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music Guide

Clifford Jordan - Four Play (1990)     Artist: Clifford Jordan
     Album: Four Play
     Label: DIW
     Year: 1990
     Format: FLAC; Quality: Lossless
     Size: 270 MB

Although this CD is technically listed under all four musicians' names (tenor-saxophonist Clifford Jordan, pianist James Williams, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Ronnie Burrage), Jordan (who contributed two of the four originals) is primarily the lead voice. His sound was always instantly recognizable and he seemed to be in a good mood for the date, judging by the many song quotes he throws into his solos (espacially on "Hi Fly"). Wiliams sounds at his best on his original jazz waltz "For My Nephews," a tune that also features Davis' bowed bass. Overall this Japanese CD (which was made available for a time domestically through Columbia) is a good example of the hard bop mainstream of the early 1990's as played by some of its best practioners. ~ Review by Scott Yanow, AMG.
