Charlie Watts Quintet - From One Charlie 1992 |

Artist: Charlie Watts QuintetAlbum: - From One Charlie Label: Continuum Records Year: 1992 Quality: MP3; 128 kb/s Size:25, 74 mb That quote from Charlie Watts in the liner notes sums up the feeling of this album. This is a warm and wonderful souvenir of Charlie Watts' obsession with Bird and his music, meant as a companion piece to his 1964 children's book, "Ode to a High Flying Bird," and recorded in 1991. Five new songs composed by alto sax player Peter King and two Parker originals ("Bluebird" and "Relaxing at Camarillo") make a short but thoroughly entertaining set of biographical and musical sketches. Unfortunately this is out of print, but the entire suite can be heard performed live (with additional narration and a complete second set of Parker tunes) on "A Tribute to Charlie Parker With Strings." And yes, while this album's fine on its own, it will make you track down the Bird originals! ~ Amazon.com |

Bachir Attar - The Next Dream (1992) |

 |
Artist: Bachir Attar Album: The Next Dream Label: CMP Format: FLAC & mp3 (320k/s) Size: 247 & 92 MB (scans) Total playing: 41:23 Back in the wildly creative period of the psychedelic '60s, surrealist/avant-garde artist Brion Gysin took his friend Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones into the Moroccan foothills to hear and record The Master Musicians of a village called Joujouka. For a week they were possessed by a seductive form of trance music that has facilitated astral travel and celestial visitations for centuries. The Next Dream, produced by maverick musician Bill Laswell, is a solo project by Bachir Attar, the chief of these musicians. Playing shepherd's flute, gimbri (three-stringed goatskin lute) and ghaita (a droning seven-holed Moroccan folk oboe), Bachir is joined by an African percussionist and reedman Maceo Parker, who played for years with James Brown. The results are intoxicatingly surreal, and otherworldly. -- AMG |

Sammy Davis Jr. - As Long As She Needs Me (1963) |

Artist: Sammy Davis Jr. Album: As Long As She Needs Me Label: Collector's Choice Release Year: 1963 Format: MP3 320 kbps Size: 67 MB As Long As She Needs Me (1963) is a fruitful union between Sammy Davis, Jr. and arrangers Marty Paich and Morty Stevens. With the singer's inimitable sense of style and flair, Davis unleashes another dozen classic reworkings of pop standards and melodies from Broadway and the silver screen. Paich's scores incorporate two distinct backing ensembles, his own ten-piece Dek-tette of heavyweight studio musicians, as well as a larger orchestral aggregate. The title composition, taken from Lionel Bart's Oliver! (1962), is enhanced by a lush accompaniment, showcasing the strength and conviction of Davis' dramatic and emotive interpretation. The same holds for "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" which is lifted by a refined chorus (likewise heard on the revisitation of another Rodgers & Hammerstein tune, "We Kiss in a Shadow" from 1956's The King and I). Conversely, "There Is Nothing Like a Dame," "Falling in Love With Love," and "The Tender Trap" are given hard-hitting and thoroughly pulse-quickening readings, allowing the vocalist to let loose with his trademark passion and high energy. Interestingly, the swinging Stevens collaborations "The Tender Trap," "Back in Your Own Back Yard," and "Out of This World" are from Davis' incipient Reprise sessions some two years earlier. "Bye Bye Blackbird" would become one of Davis' most revered catalog entries thanks to this ultra-hip and finger-snappin' overhaul. He similarly breathes new life into the jazzy and upscale redux of "Song from Two for the Seesaw (A Second Chance)," crooning above Paich's scintillating backdrop. The platter concludes with the tale of Honey Brown on the grooving and rhythmically propulsive "There Was a Tavern in the Town." Although the song commences in a low-key and unassuming manner, it isn't long before Davis pounces, turning it into a suitably show-stopping affair. In 2004 Collectors' Choice Music issued As Long As She Needs Me on CD for the first time as part of their reassessment of Sammy Davis, Jr.'s work on Reprise Records. |

Ranee Lee - Maple Groove |

 |
Artist: Ranee Lee Album: Maple Groove Published: May 01, 2004 Label: Justin Time records Quality: MP3 @ 256 kbit/s Size: 55 + 48 mb The always swinging singer Ranee Lee chose to create a songbook of works written by Canadian composers and/or lyricists for this release, including some fare not typically covered in a jazz setting. Folksinger Gordon Lightfoot 's 'If You Could Read My Mind' works surprisingly well in an uptempo hard bop setting, while rocker Bruce Cockburn 's 'My Beat' is given a funky treatment. Less successful is a bossa nova arrangement of the Guess Who 's 'Undun,' which collapses due to its vapid lyrics, while the strutting take of Blood, Sweat & Tears ' 'Spinning Wheel' goes off track due to the addition of a dumb rap by Darrell Henegan Jr. However, the standards and jazz compositions are consistently rewarding. She soars with a brisk rendition of Bill Evans ' timeless ballad 'Waltz for Debby' (with lyrics by Canada native Gene Lees ), while the McGill Students Vocal Ensemble invite comparisons to the Singers Unlimited with their backing of Lee in the amazing a cappella version of Oscar Peterson 's 'Hymn to Freedom.' Her lighthearted take of 'Swinging Shepherd Blues' includes a bit of playful scatting and singing in unison with guitarist Richard Ring . She packs an emotional punch with her powerful interpretation of 'Maybe September.' Lee is in consistently fine voice throughout the date, which is warmly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

The four lengthy selections -- three originals and an over 15-minute rendition of "Softly as in a Morning Sunrise" -- find Scofield, pianist Richie Beirach, bassist George Mraz and drummer Joe LaBarbera really stretching out. 1956: Chet Baker & Art Pepper - Picture of Heath |

Artists: Chet Baker & Art Pepper Album: Picture of Heath Label: Pacific Jazz Year: 1956, release 1961 Format, bitrate: MP3@ 192 kbit/s Time: 0.40:25 Size: 57 MB The seven sides that make up the all-star outing Picture of Heath (1961) might be familiar to fans of co-leads Chet Baker (trumpet) or Art Pepper (alto saxophone), as Playboys (1956). Perhaps owing to trademark-related issues with the men's magazine of the same name, Picture of Heath became the moniker placed on the 1961 Pacific Jazz vinyl re-release, as well as the 1989 compact disc. Regardless of the designation on the label, the contents gather selections recorded on October 31, 1956 — the third encounter between Baker and Pepper. Backing Baker and Pepper are the sizable quartet of Carl Perkins (piano) [note: not to be confused with the '50s and '60s rockabilly star], Larance Marable (drums), Curtis Counce (bass), and Phil Urso (tenor sax). Although Pepper supplied "Minor Yours" and "Tynan Time," the majority of the material can be traced to Heath Brothers trio member, Jimmy Heath (sax/flute), who was himself an acclaimed instrumentalist, composer, and arranger. The aggregate provide essential interpretations of his work, adding their own unique earmarks on to what is arguably the best and most playful interaction involving Baker and Pepper. Notable occurrences can be heard on "Picture of Heath" where Pepper sonically salutes Thelonious Monk, quoting recognizable passages from "Rhythm-A-Ning" on a number of occasions — initially during a fierce exchange with Baker on the title track and then again prominently in the commencement of the aforementioned Pepper composition "Tynan Time." One of the more striking elements coalescing the partnership between the combo's soloists is the seemingly innate abilities that Baker and Pepper share as they propel themselves through the limber lines of "For Minors Only." The level of musicianship is evident as Counce, Perkins, and Marable effortlessly banter with youthful verve. Both the studied bop enthusiast and average jazz lover will find much to enjoy and revisit on Picture of Heath. ~ Review by Lindsay Planer, AMG. |

 |
Artist: Michel Camilo Album: Thru My Eyes Format: FLAC & mp3 (320k/s) Size: 393 & 145 MB (scans) Label: RMM Total playing: 73:46 Michel Camilo could have obscured his virtuosity in a large band, playing brilliantly and receiving critical acclaim from the denizens of dark, smoke filled nightclubs who would have loved him in a private way as he pounded his images into the keys above the brass section, above the reeds. Something told Michel that what he possesed was special, a blessing so rare that it needed a special setting, a forum where people could listen to the travels of his fingers, the musical flight of his fertile imagination. And so he chose the trio for this album, thank God! It was good enough for Oscar Peterson, for Eroll Garner, for Bill Evans, and perfect for Michel Camilo. For decades, those of us who love the person and the musician, knew deep down that quiet place of soul, due south, tropical south, where talent lies on every street corner, like diamonds shining brilliantly, waiting to be picked up by anyone who truly loves jazz. And each album Michel recorded placed him closer and closer to that pinnacle where he could not be judged by nationality, nor by his extensive knowledge of Afro-Antillian rhythms, but by his sheer pianistic genius, his overpowering harmonic sense of space and time, and his humble way of allowing others to shine as he reached out for our hearts and ears. This, then, is the album complete with all the jazz classics critics and public have used to determine who can make the grade and be accepted into the pantheon of piano masters. Michel takes each masterpiece and gives it a new outfit, complete with accessories and scent. He puts his indelible Camilian print on it without changing the drape of the musical cloth.(from liner notes ) |

 |
Artist: Doris Day Album: Love Me Or Leave Me Release Date: 1955 Label: Columbia Format: mp3 256 kbps Size: 55 MB Love Me or Leave Me was one of Doris Day's greatest, and least likely, successes. Coming out of a string of light movie musicals, she turned in a dramatic performance in this film biography of singer Ruth Etting. She looked nothing like Etting and made no attempt to sound like her, either. But since Etting's recordings of the 1920s and '30s were long out of print and she made only a few films, that was less of a problem than it would have been for a performer whose voice and appearance were better preserved and available. The film was a popular and critical success, but the soundtrack, consisting entirely of Day's renditions of Etting signature songs like the title tune and "Ten Cents Dance," plus a couple of newly written songs, was a blockbuster, spending months at the top of the charts and becoming far and away the best selling of the relatively new 12" LPs of 1955. Day was given a chance to sing something different from the novelty-dominated contemporary material and often second-rate screen songs she had been assigned up to this point, and she reveled in the opportunity. |

 |
Artist: Doris Day Album: I'll See You In My Dreams Original Release Year: 1951 Label: Columbia Format: mp3 256 kbps Size: 43 MB Doris Day may have come to movies accidentally, but she proved a real workhorse once she got started. I'll See You in My Dreams, a film biography of songwriter Gus Kahn (played by Danny Thomas -- Day played Kahn's wife), was her fifth film appearance of 1951. It was also her third musical of the year, following Lullaby of Broadway and On Moonlight Bay. Warner Bros., which had her under contract, didn't yet have a record company, so there were no official soundtrack albums from these films, but Columbia Records, which also had her under contract, was happy to take up the slack by having her make studio recordings of the songs from the films, sometimes with members of the cast. And that formula had been a spectacular success, giving her four consecutive Top Five albums. |
