Mississippi John Hurt - Delta Blues |
Biography |
 |
 |
Mississippi John Hurt Mississippi John Hurt was born July 2, 1892, in Teoc, Mississippi. John was the eighth of ten children born to Paul Hurt and Mae Jane Smith. According to personal biography of his life John Hurt learn to love and appreciate music and guitar playing from William H Carson, a man infatuated with his teacher at the St. James School, located in Avalon, Mississippi. John Hurt stated, " I wasn't allowed to bother Mr. Carson's guitar. I would wait until he feel asleep at my house, then I would slip his guitar into my room and try to play. There I learned to play the guitar at the age of nine years old. After that, my mother bought me a second hand guitar at the price of $1.50! 1 can tell you there was no beautiful sound than my own guitar music. I was playing for country dances at the same time working very hard on a farm new Avalon Mississippi." Hurt played solo at local parties where his fluid yet highly syncopated guitar style made him a favorite among Carroll County dancers. His fame was localized, however; it was not until 1912 that he started playing parties around Jackson, Mississippi, 103 miles from his native Avalon. While Hurt worked mostly outside music as a farmer and laborer, his musical reputation among whites as well as blacks led to his first recording session in Memphis in 1928. Willie T. Narmour and Shell W. Smith, two white country musicians from Carroll County, recommended him to their record producer, Tommy Rockwell In 1916 John Hurt met and married Gertrude Hoskins. Three years later they had a son TC Hurt born April 1, 1919. Then in 1921, they had a daughter Ida Mae Hurt born June 26, 1921. Shortly after the birth of Ida Mae John and Gertrude separated for unknown reasons. John and Gertrude never divorced, however, did go there separate ways as couple. Yet they continued to raise their children as one. Gertrude soon met Will Connelly who shared the parenting of the two children. They never had children together. John and Jesse Lee Cole shared the parenting of the two children and had one son of their own, John William. The children of John and Gertrude both preceded their parent in death. Ida Mae was killed at the age of 19 by her estranged husband, Doc Johnson she left behind two small children whom Gertrude raised as her own. TC Hurt died of cancer in 1965 at the age of 46 years old leaving 14 children behind many under the age of adulthood. Between John Hurt's three children he had eighteen grandchildren. TC and his wife Annie Dora Richardson had fourteen children. Ida Mae and her husband Doc Johnson had two children. John William and his wife Bonnie Lott had two children which John and Jesse raised as their own. |

Artist: Keith TippettAlbum: You Are Here…I Am ThereLabel: Polydor Year: 1969 Genre: Jazz Format, bitrate: mp3, 192kb/s Size: 69MB Time: 47:02 Keith Tippett's debut album as a bandleader was and remains a rather remarkable affair in that it was the first engagement of British young people who came up in rock, pop, and blues bands to play jazz. Tippett himself is a classically trained musician who came to jazz via Mingus, George Russell, Coltrane, and Pharoah Sanders, but his compositional element also owes to composers such as Darius Milhaud, Vaughan Williams, and Frederick Delius. His front-line group contains the Soft Machine's Elton Dean, plus Nick Evans and Marc Charig, while his rhythm section contains drummer Alan Jackson and bassist Jeff Clyne -- whose bowing sensibilities are not only highly developed but provocative as well. All eight tracks were composed and arranged by Tippett, but his penchant for writing for a particular group of musicians is very keen here: check the Charig solo in "I Wish There Was Nowhere," Tippett's own solo in "Violence," and the saxophonistry of Dean in "Stately Dance for Miss Primm" and both versions of "This Evening Was Like Last Year." Evans' trombone work so thoroughly saturates most charts that it's impossible to single anything out as a specific vehicle for him. Tippett's engaging harmonic sensibilities wrap around tonal investigation, a deeply committed sense of the blues and swing, and a color palette that owes plenty to Gil Evans without sounding the least bit derivative. This is brave jazz that makes use of space, harmonic organization, and free improv, much more so than some of his contemporaries who would just as soon do away with jazz as deepen or widen it. Very fine indeed. All Music Guide Review by Thom Jurek |

Artist: Andrew HillAlbum: Mosaic Select23: Andrew Hill – SoloLabel: Mosaic Year: 2007 Genre: Jazz, piano Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbps Time: 47:52 74:38 55:28 Size: 104x4 + 53.7 Mb When Blue Note released Andrew Hill's label debut Black Fire in March 1964, the jazz community immediately recognized a fresh new voice as bold and distinctive as Thelonious Monk or Herbie Nichols. For the next six years, Hill applied his singular compositional skills to a variety of settings from trio to nonet, even incorporating quartets with string quartets and quintets with six-voice choirs. So much of Andrew's prime Blue Note recordings had depended on and been written for the interaction of empathetic improvisers, that his first solo recordings Hommage and Live At Montreux, both from 1975, came as a surprise to even his most die-hard fans. Those experiences whetted his appetite for more. Living in a small Bay Area bedroom community, he began playing a lot of solo concerts at Arts Centers up and down the West Coast. In August and October 1978, he made three trips to the Fantasy Recording Studio in Berkeley for lengthy solo piano sessions. Two extended pieces were issued on the Artists House LP From California With Love. That album quickly became a collector's item when the label folded. Meanwhile over two hours of solo piano music by Andrew remained in the can until Mosaic discovered the session tapes in Hawaii. Now the complete sessions are gathered in this Select. Hearing a great pianist/composer in solo setting is like eavesdropping on the thought processes of a restless, creative mind. Unfettered by other instruments and input, the artist is free to go wherever his inner logic and imagination take him. Like Thelonious Monk and Randy Weston among others, Andrew Hill's most revealing and fascinating creations are often those made alone at a piano. |

Artist: Keith Tippett & Stan TraceyAlbum: T’N’T Label: Emanem Year: 1974 Genre: Jazz Format: FLAC Size: 204MB Time: 49:35 Octogenarian Stan Tracey quietly enters and it’s straight down to business, an evening of “past, present and future work”. The band launches into a powerful rendition Duke Ellington’s “It don’t mean a thing”, which sets the tone for the evening. Backed by the powerhouse rhythm section of bassist Andy Cleyndert and Tracey’s son, Clark, you know the swing is never going to be far away. Tracey settled into the opening number like a pair of comfortable shoes. Taking us through some snappy piano work, he evokes the angular lines of Thelonious Monk and even shades of Bill Evans. This is going to be a special night, the audience-members wishing they’d bought that signed vinyl on sale in the foyer. |

Artist: Bobby TimmonsAlbum: Connecticut Jazz PartyLabel: Chiaroscuro Year: 1964, release:2003 Genre: Soul-Jazz, Hard Bop Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Size: 100mb This somewhat obscure live recording, which has appeared on Chiaroscuro and Early Bird LPs but not yet on CD, features pianist Bobby Timmons, altoist Sonny Red, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Mickey Roker really stretching out on five standards including a 12½-minute rendition of "Here's That Rainy Day" and a nearly-12-minute "Now's the Time." The playing has plenty of spirit although the recording quality is not state-of-the-art, making this an LP more for Bobby Timmons and Sonny Red completists than for general collectors. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |

Benny Golson - That's Funky (2003) |

 |
Artist: Benny Golson Album: That's Funky Label: Arkadia Jazz Year: 2002, release: 2003 Quality:FLAC Size:326 mb (with scans) As an originator of the initial soul-funk movement of the '60s when he was with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Golson is eminently qualified to funkify jazz and R&B-flavored instrumental music. Nat Adderley plays cornet alongside Golson's tenor in this, one of his last recordings before he passed away. Always fresh and deep in the groove is pianist Monty Alexander, and acoustic bassist Ray Drummond plays fat notes with ultimate conviction. Also contributing here is genius drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith, who lays out rhythms that Bernard Purdie would be envious of. All of the tunes are well-known, save Golson's original "Mississippi Windows," dedicated to the saxophonist's days with R&B icon Bullmoose Jackson. Golson also re-casts his classic "Blues March" in a New Orleans style, while the steady tick-tock to shuffle stride of "Moanin'" is not all that different from the original. The ultra-funky "Work Song" is much more so than the original, while "Sidewinder" is the single tune on the date that is most faithful to the original and not rhythmically altered. There are two versions of "Mack the Knife": one is a half-speed funk with ol' Mackie coming back with a twist; the second is the sole solid swinger of the session, as Golson and Adderley swap licks half-and-half on the melody line, then join together and slightly modify the line. Though they're not swinging, for the most part, in conventional 2/4 or 4/4 jazz beats, in a sense they are swinging in their own inimitable, danceable, street-derived, backbeat-driven way á la Silver, Stanley Turrentine, and Grant Green, among others. Those inventors of this boogaloo-influenced subgenre should be happy with Golson's results. Michael G. Nastos, All Music Guide |

Phil Woods - Real Life |

 |
Artist: Phil Woods Album: Real life Original Release Date: February 1, 1991 Label: Chesky Records Quality: 256 kbps mp3 Size: 63 + 68 mb During a major portion of his career, Phil Woods predominately led a quartet or quintet, so the opportunity to work with his Little Big Band gave him a special pleasure, by expanding both the brass and reeds to an octet. His third release to feature the octet includes his working quintet at the time, including trombonist Hal Crook, pianist Jim McNeely, plus his longtime rhythm section, bassist Steve Gilmore and drummer Bill Goodwin. Guests include Woods' former sideman trumpeter/flugelhornist Tom Harrell, alto and baritone saxophonist Nick Brignola, plus alto and tenor saxophonist Nelson Hill. Although the economics of touring with a band this size made it impossible to tour, the musicians dove into the difficult arrangements with plenty of gusto and end up sounding as if they had been playing them in concert for months. McNeely's challenging "Real Life" is especially inspired, while Woods is joined by both Brignola and Hill on alto saxes for a bluesy rendition of "Quill," a tribute to Woods' former partner, Gene Quill. The leader switches to clarinet for the powerful "Waltz for Harry," written in memory of Woods' former guitarist, Harry Leahey; Harrell's warm flugelhorn and McNeely's piano solo are also featured. Harrell's "Sail Away," one of his most important compositions, is arranged by Woods to feature Crook's potent trombone. The program ends with a boisterous rendition of Woods' usual set closer, including snatches of several pieces, among themDizzy Gillespie's famous introduction to "All the Things You Are," a blistering bit of "52nd Street Theme," plus the closing tags of "Salt Peanuts" and "Harlem Nocturne." Sadly, this would be the final recording of this octet, as the death of Nick Brignola in 2002 prevented a reunion of this particular lineup of jazz all-stars. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |

Artist: Miles Davis Album: Complete In A Silent Way Sessions Label:Legacy Year: May 11, 2004 Genre: Jazz Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kBit/s Time: 3 h. 30 min. Size: 485 MB AMG Rating: Though BITCHES BREW has attained iconic status as one of the most important, progressive statements ... Full Descriptionin post-bop jazz history, it's predecessor IN A SILENT WAY--though less widely acknowledged--was perhaps even more revolutionary for its dissolution of the songform-oriented cool jazz approach and introduction of electric instruments. This three-disc set, featuring all the material laid down in those vaunted 1969 sessions, is a revelatory sonic document that further illuminates the maverick genius of Miles Davis. In addition to the original SILENT WAY tracks as we know them, there are previously unheard compositions and alternate versions that shed new light on Miles's process. "The Ghetto Walk," for example, which was never released before in any form is a slow-burner that features some of new arrival John McLaughlin's most expansive, questing guitar work (partially due to Miles's penchant for springing new, unrehearsed material on his musicians). The shifting, kaleidoscopic keyboard work of Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and Joe Zawinul (what a trio!), gives another undiscovered gem "Early Minor" a haunting, ethereal feel. Additionally, the full, unedited versions of tunes included on the original album give an idea of producer Teo Macero's groundbreaking cut-and-paste editing process. For anyone interested in the evolution of modern jazz, THE COMPLETE IN A SILENT WAY SESSIONS is an essential item. |

Artist: Coleman Hawkins Album: And Confreres Year: 1961 Label: Verve Quality: FLAC + all covers Size: 89+89+62 mb Coleman & Confreres. Ben Webster (ts), Roy Eldridge (tpt), and Hawkins head things up. This is one of the few worthwhile releases in this special Alpha series. In first two tracks Hawkins is joined by the ever-swinging Oscar Peterson trio, Ben Webster (who takes back seat on second track) and drummer Alvin Stoller, a nice group of hard swingers who nevertheless show more of their mellow side than some might expect... The rest of the album is equally rewarding; the Hawk stretches his wings working with Roy Eldridge (tp), Hank Jones (p), George Duvivier (b) and Mickey Sheen (dm) In his liner notes Nat Hentoff says something interesting and quite significant - when playing with Hawk, Eldridge doesn't feel the urge to light up the proceedings with a fierce solo (pyrotechnical hysteria is something often mentioned by Roy's detractors...). Hawkins' playing is so full of energy even in slower tempoes that Eldridge also takes it down a notch and constructs his solos with less high register explorations...
This, at first glance quite laid back album (Hawk relaxes, one might say) is therefore a great example of the jazz giants at the hight of their power, playing subtly and intelligently, toying with the jazz-idiom they helped to create (or that they joined with a lot of respect). |

Artist: Pepper Adams Album: Pepper Adams Plays Charles Mingus Label: Fresh Sound Year: 1963, release: 2004 Genre: Hard Bop Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Size: 99.3mb Pepper Adams' Plays Charlie Mingus is a watershed album in Adams' long career. For starters, Mingus himself had a hand in the selection of material for the dates, along with Adams and vibist Teddy Charles. Next, the two dates here, September 9 and 12, 1963, were recorded with two different bands. Most of the material was taped on the earlier date with an octet comprised of Adams, Mingus' own drummer, Danny Richmond, bassist Paul Chambers, and Thad Jones on trumpet and his brother Hank on piano. The latter date added Charles McPherson on alto, Zoot Sims on tenor, Bennie Powell on trombone, and had Bob Cranshaw replacing Chambers on bass. Adams' read of "Fables of Faubus," by the quintet with its loping, rather than careening, pace, was arranged by Thad Jones approved by the composer. Historically, it is also the first recording of the work without vocals. "Incarnation," also by the quintet, was arranged by Adams. Hank Jones leads the band in the piece's difficult rhythmic and harmonic structures, and he edges Adams and Thad Jones on in the front line; Pepper's solo and fills are among the most moving and knotty of his career. Of the octet session, "Haitian Fight Song" is as furious as the composer's, as Cranshaw's bass drives the band inexhaustibly into the spirit of righteous indignation and rage at its heart. On "Better Git It in Your Soul," Sims and Powell's solos are full of gut-bucket funk and stride the R&B line with aplomb and plenty of grease. This is one of those must-own recordings for fans of Adams; but it is also for those who revere Mingus' work, because, as radical as some of these interpretations are, they were not only sanctioned by, but delighted in by the composer. ~ Thom Jurek, AMG |
