This album has more than its share of remarkable music. Pianist Oscar Peterson takes seven performances (including a five-song Duke Ellington medley and racehorse renditions of "Indiana" and "Sweet Georgia Brown") unaccompanied and guitarist Joe Pass follows with five solo selections of his own. But it is when Peterson and Pass team together for the final six numbers that the sparks really fly, particularly on "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Blues for Bise"; the results are often quite wondrous. In some of these previously unreleased concert performances, the tenor saxophonist reaches peaks of the intensity, drive, inventiveness and whimsy that have kept him inimitable for nearly six decades. His "Tenor Madness" solo from Japan in 2000 is one of Rollins's most compelling recorded blues statements. There's a remarkable "Easy Living" from Poland in 1980. "More Than You Know," recorded in France in 2006, concludes with a ravishing extended cadenza that is a tour through the inner workings of a great melodist's creative process. The most recent track, "Some Enchanted Evening," from Rollins's 2007 Carnegie Hall concert, is curiously tentative despite the presence of bassist Christian McBride and drummer Roy Haynes. The architectonic "Blossoms," from Sweden in 1980, is anything but tentative. Full of risk-taking, it is twelve-and-a-half minutes of Rollins at his most penetrating and complex.

This is one of the most accessible of altoist Jackie McLean's Blue Note sessions, for the six songs, which have been augmented on this CD reissue by "new" alternate versions of "Goin' Way Blues" and "Torchin'," are all blues. McLean teams up with the fiery young trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Doug Watkins, and drummer Pete La Roca for diverse originals by the leader, Drew, and Hubbard that all have the feeling (if not always the exact structure) of the blues. The variety of tempos, moods, and styles makes this a highly recommended set. - AMG

Planet Drum is the brainchild of Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, whose research into world drum styles has yielded some interesting and important recordings. On this one, he brings together artists from cultures as diverse as India, Brazil, and Nigeria. The idea was for everyone to simply get together, start playing, and see what would happen. What happened, predictably, was a wonderful learning and bonding experience for the drummers and a recording that is, overall, pretty boring for those who weren't a part of it. Some of the album's best moments feature singer Flora Purim ("Light Over Shadow," "Lost River"); another is an exciting program piece called "The Hunt." "Temple Caves," a fragile and lovely piece that defines more space than it fills, is another high point. But most of the album consists of repetitive, monochromatic jams that start out pleasant and lulling and quickly become merely annoying. Having the Indian percussionist "Vikku" Vinayakram play alongside Babatunde Olatunji may make for a heartwarming sociopolitical statement, but the resulting music doesn't really go anywhere or do anything.
