David Sanborn – Love Songs (1995)
     Artist: David Sanborn
     Album: Love Songs
     Label: Warner Bros / Wea
     Year: 1995
     Release Date: 1976
     Genre: Smooth Jazz
     Format, bitrate: mp3;160 kb/sec
     Size: 49.91MB

This 1995 CD sampler has a dozen songs taken from eight of altoist David Sanborn's Warner Bros. releases, including a 1985 version of "The Water Is Wide" (with Linda Ronstadt on vocal) that was not previously released domestically. A fine all-around set with the emphasis on passionate ballad statements, the CD is more for listeners unfamiliar with Sanborn than for more serious Sanborn collectors, who will prefer the complete original sets. Highlights include "Straight To The Heart," "You Don't Know Me" and "I Do It For Your Love." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Why it took vocalist Madeleine Peyroux eight years to follow up her acclaimed Dreamland album is anybody's guess. The explanation from her website bio claims, "I could have kept running with it, but I took a breather." Really it hardly matters, since there have been plenty of capable singers to fill that void. Produced by Larry Klein, Careless Love is essentially Dreamland part deux. She lost Yves Beauvais and Atlantic Records, as well as a stellar cast of edgy jazz and rock session players, but she did gain Larry Klein. There are some fine players on this album, including Larry Goldings, Scott Amendola, David Piltch, and Dean Parks, and it's a much more focused set than Dreamland. That she's on Rounder is just an "oh well." Since Klein is not reined in by having to be a "jazz" producer, his sense of restrained and subtle adventure is a perfect foil for Peyroux's voice and phrasing, which is still too close to the Billie Holiday model for comfort. The material is a curious collection of modern pop songs, country tunes, and old nuggets. There's an original as well in "Don't Wait Too Long," co-written with Jesse Harris and Klein. Peyroux's reading of Leonard Cohen's "Dance Me to the End of Love" that opens the disc is radical, sung like a German cabaret song, and lacks the drama of the original, which is on purpose but it's questionable as to whether it works.

Her cover of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" works much better. It keeps the breeziness of the original but focuses on the object of the song still being very present to the protagonist -- delighting in the presence of the Beloved. Parks' guitars play sparely and pronouncedly in the mix, as Amendola's brushwork complements the spare cymbal and tom-tom work of Jay Bellerose as well as Goldings' in-the-groove organ and piano. The hinge track on this record is the empathic and moving version of Elliott Smith's "Between the Bars." With tense sound effects whispering in the backdrop and Goldings' celeste setting the atmosphere, once again Amendola's brushes whisper and shimmer, giving the singer an anchor in the depth of the song's melancholy. It's simply awesome. The sparse haunted treatment of Hank Williams' "Weary Blues" is devoid of its country trappings and rooted firmly in the uptown blues tradition of Holiday's 1940s. Likewise, the title track, a classic standard by W.C. Handy, is turned inside out and made a B sharp gospel-flavored R&B tune, driven by Goldings on the organ and a Rhodes piano -- an instrument that makes a frequent appearance here. Parks' subtle yet dirty guitar gives the singer a platform and she swims inside the lyric, letting it fall from her mouth. The tune's swing quotient is formidable. In all, this is a stronger record than Dreamland, in part because Klein is obviously sympathetic to singers and because Peyroux is a more confident and commanding singer. It's a welcome addition to the shelf, but if she waits another eight years, that space reserved for her may disappear. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

Madeleine Peyroux made a bit of a stir in 1996 due to her voice sounding remarkably close at times to Billie Holiday's. This wide-ranging set features Peyroux singing swing standards, originals and tunes that hint at country and folk music. Her supporting cast, which changes on each selection, includes a restrained James Carter on tenor and bass clarinet, Marc Ribot on dobro and guitar, trumpeter Marcus Printup, pianist Cyrus Chestnut and violinist Regina Carter, among others. A very interesting release which, despite the derivative nature of Peyroux's voice, is full of surprises. Highlights include "Walkin' After Midnight," "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter," "La Vie en Rose" and "Muddy Water." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Dizzy Gillespie - Have Trumpet, Will Excite!
     Artist - Dizzy Gillespie
Album - Have Trumpet, Will Excite!
     Label - Verve
     Year - 1959
     Quality - MP3@320 kb/s
     Size - 91 mb

It's easy and perhaps unfair to take any later jazz album by a trendy, "hot" trumpeter and compare it to a classic like Have Trumpet, Will Excite!. Critics and fans have been afforded the luxury of time to weed out half-efforts. Still, even without former knowledge of who Dizzy Gillespie is, Have Trumpet, Will Excite! separates itself from the crowd pretty quickly. The Latin up-tempo arrangement of "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" thrusts the song into an entirely different realm. Junior Mance's piano kicks things of with a quirky, forceful rhythm, and after Gillespie's trumpet lays down the bare bones of the melody, it's pretty much forgotten. From there, the band takes off on a creative surge. The same is true of "My Man." A brave arrangement, kicked off by piano and outlined by trumpet, completely rewrites the piece. "Sure," Gillespie and the band, seem to say, "We can play old swing tunes, but wouldn't it be cool if we turned them inside out?" This approach, along with sharp solos, gives the material an exciting edge. Gillespie's solo on "St. Louis Blues" just soars, while Les Spann, who plays both flute and guitar on the album, follows him with a bristly guitar solo. Mance offers distinctive piano work that matches Gillespie's enthusiasm on tunes like "Woody 'n' You," while bassist Sam Jones and drummer Lex Humphries keep a high-octane rhythm in constant motion. The 2001 reissue adds several outtakes which are fun and a set of liner notes by Kirk Silsbee. Have Trumpet, Will Excite! more than measures up to its promise and stands as a cornerstone to Gillespie's '50s work. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., All Music Guide

(Jack DeJohnette)
9 августа 1942г.
“I love to play grooves. Aside from swinging, and being abstract, I also love to be in the pocket and make a groove something substantial.”

The Complete Decca Trios -- Plus is a double-disc, 50-track collection containing all of the recordings Les Paul made for Decca between 1936 and 1947, including all of his released and unreleased masters, plus several tracks he cut with fellow Decca recording artists. These are the recordings that earned Paul's reputation as an excellent guitarist and they show his extraordinary range. He could play jazz and Hawaiian music, swing with big bands or subtly support singers like Bing Crosby, Helen Forrest and The Andrews Sisters. All of that is featured here, on a collection that is essential for anyone with an interest in Paul or the history of the electric guitar. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Tony Bennett - Snowfall (1968)
     Artist: Tony Bennett
Album: Snowfall: The Tony Bennett Christmas Album
     Label: Columbia
     Year: 1968
     Format: mp3 320Kbps
     Size: 68,8 Mb

With British arranger/conductor Robert Farnon handling the transatlantic sessions, Tony Bennett's 1968 Christmas album turned into a swinging affair, from the version of "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music (how did this song become associated with Christmas?) to seasonal standards like "White Christmas" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Bennett's warm style was especially winning on this kind of material, making an inevitable assignment a winning combination of singer and songs. [In 1994, Columbia Records added one track — a version of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" recorded on The Jon Stewart Show — and reissued Snowfall on CD.] (By William Ruhlmann)

The music on Lonesome Road is almost as fine as that on The Sermon or Groovin' at Small's Paradise. Jimmy Smith, guitarist Eddie McFadden and drummer Donald Bailey play a selection of eight standards, but the songs don't sound stale; they sound fresh and alive...
