Thelonious Monk - Straight, No Chaser (1967)

This CD reissue of one of Thelonious Monk's most accessible (and commercially successful) albums differs greatly from the 1967 LP. Besides previously unavailable takes Duke Ellington's "I Didn't Know About You," Monk's own "Green Chimneys" and the rare and exquisite piano solo "This Is My Story, This Is My Song," the CD includes previously unheard takes of three of the album's original six tracks. The time differences in these versions are substantial: the title track is lengthened by nearly a minute, the classic "We See" by 2:47 and "Japanese Folk Song (Kojo No Tsuki)" by a whopping 5:41. (For purists, Columbia reissued the original album on vinyl in 1998.) As always, the more Monk the better, but the added material is particularly welcome in this case, as STRAIGHT NO CHASER finds the pianist and his quartet partners--tenor Charlie Rouse, drummer Ben Riley and brilliant bassist Larry Gales--at the height of their considerable powers.

1984: Marian McPartland - Piano Jazz Radio Broadcast [With Special Guest Dave Brubeck]

Dave Brubeck and Marian McPartland became good friends back in the 1950s, so it was no surprise that he was one of her guests in the early years of her long running radio program. Unlike many of her guests, Brubeck doesn't keep the solo spotlight on himself in the early part of the show, preferring to have his hostess join him for delightful duets of standards like "St. Louis Blues" (a long time favorite concert opener for Brubeck) and often recorded Brubeck masterpieces such as "The Duke" and "In Your Own Sweet Way"; Brubeck's Chopin-influenced "Thank You (Dziekuje)" deserves to be as well known. Marian solos on another lovely Brubeck ballad, "Summer Song." Brubeck was joking about a lack of confidence in playing alone when the tapes weren't rolling, so it is hilarious to hear McPartland comment to Brubeck at the end of their rousing finale of "Take Five," "What do you mean no chops?" to her guest's laughter. Needless to say, they complement one another's playing very well on all of their duets, including the adventurous improvised "Free Piece." Although a total of 32 editions of Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz were issued on compact disc between 1993 and 1996, this is the only release that features a track not included in the original broadcast on National Public Radio. At Brubeck's insistence, the original session tapes were located and a brief version of his "Polytonal Blues," which was originally recorded for a Concord LP as "Polly," was added; this wild performance is typical Brubeck, who picked up the pace of recording solo tracks in the years following this taping. This is one of the most enjoyable editions of Piano Jazz made commercially available so far, and unless Concord is willing to resume releasing additional great programs from this series (which began airing in 1979), collectors will have to make due taping and trading copies of the broadcasts. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Charlie Parker And The Stars Of Modern Jazz - Of Carnegie Hall Christmas - 1949

This Carnegie Hall concert can be considered the height of the bebop era. Among the top young modernists heard near their early peaks are pianist Bud Powell, trumpeter Miles Davis, baritonist Serge Chaloff, altoist Sonny Stitt, trombonist Kai Winding, tenor-saxophonists Stan Getz and Warne Marsh, pianist Lennie Tristano, altoist Lee Konitz and Sarah Vaughan. But while their performances are consistently outsanding, Charlie Parker and his quintet (which includes trumpeter Red Rodney, pianist Al Haig, bassist Tommy Potter and drummer Roy Haynes) steals the show. Bird and Rodney rarely sounded more fiery than on their five songs and Parker's incredible solo on this version of "Ko Ko" might very well be his best. This CD is highly recommended for all collections. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

MUGZY'S MOVE is the second release from noted swingsters Royal Crown Revue. The album features some prime examples of this seven-piece ensemble's own brand of gangster-culture-laced-swing. There's the finger-snapping, bullet-flying groove of ... Full Description"Zip Gun Bop," complete with singer Eddie Nichols' between-verse, Joe-Pesci-like vocal chiding. Sinatraesque numbers like "Beyond the Sea" show the band's knack for catchy orchestration. They also provide opportunities for Nichols to show himself off as a serious crooner.

Most of the songs on MUGZY'S MOVE are arranged to allow these very talented instrumentalists to strut their individual chops at any turn. When the ensemble turns up the tempo on "Park's Place," they maintain a seamless cohesion that's held down by the dance of Veikko Lepisto's fingers across the bass strings. Trumpeter Scott Steen gives a standout performance on the track. The band doesn't shy away from humor either. "Datin' with no Dough" explores the throes of being a "cat trying to court with no scratch." Fans of the neo-swing movement shouldn't miss MUGZY'S MOVE.

An early recording of an under-documented quintet, co-led by Miles and Tadd Dameron. Joined by a young James Moody with Kenny Clarke and Barney Spieler in the rhythm section the quintet performs some excellent bop rundowns of "Rifftide", "Good Bait", "Don't Blame Me", "Lady Bird", "Wah Hoo", "Allen's Alley", "Embraceable You", "Ornithology" and "All The things You Are".

Tadd Dameron.
Tadd Dameron - Fats Navarro.
High Resolution, 24 bit Edition.

Hank Mobley - The Complete Blue Note Hank Mobley Fifties Sessions

          Artist: Hank Mobley

          Label: Mosaic

          Booklet scans included

This is a typically remarkable box set from Mosaic. The six-CD limited-edition package has all of tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley's recordings as a leader for Blue Note from a three-year period, all of the music originally included in the albums titled The Hank Mobley Quartet, Hank Mobley Sextet, Hank Mobley & His All-Stars, Hank Mobley Quintet, Hank, Hank Mobley, Curtain Call, Poppin', and Peckin' Time; not a lot of imagination went into these records' original titles. There is only one previously unissued selection (the alternate take of "Barrel of Funk"), but two of the albums were only out previously in Japan, and most of the others had not been previously available on CD. Mobley, an underrated player with a distinctive sound (influenced at times by Sonny Rollins), would continue to grow as an improviser and composer throughout the 1960s, but even on his earliest date here, he is a strong (if unsung) soloist. Featured along with the leader is a who's who of 1950s hard bop, including trumpeters Donald Byrd, Lee Morgan, Bill Hardman, Kenny Dorham, and Art Farmer, pianists Horace Silver, Bobby Timmons, Sonny Clark, and Wynton Kelly, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, bassists Doug Watkins, Paul Chambers, Wilbur Ware, and Jimmy Rowser, and drummers Art Blakey, Charlie Persip, Philly Joe Jones, and Art Taylor. A must for Hank Mobley and 1950s Blue Note fans, but this deluxe box (released in 1998) promises to go out of print quickly. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

The First Lady of Song recorded these tunes in 1960, at the peak of her interpretive powers. As such, she puts her singular stamp on everything from a sultry vamp like "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve" to the sweet and cozy "The Christmas Song." Even potentially shopworn standards like "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" sound fresher when they're coming from Ella Fitzgerald...
