В составе ряда коллективов выступали также музыканты из Казани, Риги, Тулы и других городов. Многие из этих коллективов еще на прошлых фестивалях утвердили свое право на существование. А на фестивале «Джаз 67» с успехом выступили не только уже известные (хотя и молодые) музыканты, участники зарубежных и отечественных фестивалей, но и многие другие, как профессиональные, так и самодеятельные исполнители. Ряд ансамблей явился объединением не только музыкантов-профессионалов, но и музыкантов-любителей, для которых джаз стал фактически второй профессией. |

Each song is represented in its original version, including "White Christmas," which is not often heard in its 1942 Academy Award-winning version. Among other highlights are "New San Antonio Rose," "Pistol Packin' Mama," "Jingle Bells," "Swinging on a Star," "Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral (That's an Irish Lullaby)," "Don't Fence Me In," "Galway Bay," "Play a Simple Melody," and "Silent Night, Holy Night," which has never been available on CD prior to this collection. On this live set (recorded in Pittsburgh), Harris and his regular quartet of the period (with guitarist Ron Eschete, bassist Luther Hughes, and drummer Paul Humphrey) perform typically soulful versions of "Summertime," "You Don't Know Me," "Lady Be Good" (taken at a relaxed tempo), and "That's All." Veteran tenor saxophonist and flutist Frank Wess is featured on four other numbers: two of his originals plus "Straight No Chaser" and "My Funny Valentine." The music overall is predictably excellent, for all of Harris' Concord recordings are easily recommended. AMG Review by Scott Yanow

Huge chunks of his brilliant '65 albums, Sings Soul Ballads and Otis Blue, are included, along with five Carla Thomas duets from the 1967 LP King and Queen. Among the obscure jewels rescued from oblivion are Redding's previously unissued '66 recording of "You Left the Water Running" -- originally cut as a demo for Wilson Pickett, with Otis on acoustic guitar -- and a recording of "I've Been Loving You Too Long" that eclipses the hit-single version with its slower, bluesy tension and heartbreaking vocal. Sides seven and eight are a revelation in themselves, featuring late '67 tracks (the great swamp-pop stomp "Love Man" and the finger-poppin' "Hard to Handle") and ending appropriately with the masterful "(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay," the last song Otis Redding ever recorded. |

Brazilian artists have often been quite adept at creating music that has light and delicate qualities, but never degenerates into "elevator muzak." Like the bossa nova of the '60s, Crazy Rhythm is "easy listening" music with a difference -- some of it was soft enough for airplay on "quiet storm" and "smooth jazz" radio, but nothing on this CD comes across as contrived or calculated. Jose Roberto Bertrami delivers one of the finest solos of his career on the beautiful and enchanting "Diza," and special guest Joe Pass (guitar) is in fine form on "Tropical Horizon" and "Hobalala." ~ Alex Henderson, AMG |

Johnson, plus the piano roll version of his hit "The Charleston." Many of these performances have been formerly issued in haphazard or incomplete fashion, but this exciting CD has all of Johnson's dates up until his 1930 solos. There are three early band sides from 1921 (including Johnson's "Carolina Shout"), 13 piano solos ("Snowy Morning Blues," "Riffs," and "Feeling Blue" are particularly memorable), and hot combos that feature such sidemen as cornetist/trumpeters Louis Metcalfe, Cootie Williams, and King Oliver and (on two songs) fellow pianist Fats Waller.
