     История уникального оркестра восходит к 1986 году, когда окончивший Берлинский университет искусств (по специальности оперный певец) молодой Макс Раабе вместе с Вернером Леонардом и группой единомышленников решил организовать небольшой оркестр, который и получил название "Palast Orchester".
     Первое выступление коллектива состоялось в 1987 году в Берлине. Предполагалось, что они будут создавать музыкальный фон в фойе театра между действиями спектаклей. Но их манера исполнения сразу же привлекла толпу народа, которая не собиралась расходиться - публика стоя аплодировала появлению новой звезды. В течение 90-х годов оркестр вел активную концертную деятельность, выступая в Германии, Австрии, Швейцарии и Голландии. На концерт, посвященный десятилетнему юбилею коллектива, пришло 17 тысяч фанатов.

     Altoist Sonny Criss' Prestige recordings of the late 1960s generally included a current pop tune or two along with some stronger jazz pieces. This 1998 CD reissue is of particular interest because the intense altoist is teamed with guitarist Tal Farlow (who had recently come out of retirement before slipping back into obscurity for a few more years), pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Lenny McBrowne. "Up, Up and Away" (the Fifth Dimension hit) has more challenging chord changes than one would think and, although "Sunny" is lightweight, Criss really digs in and uplifts it. In addition, the leader overflows "Willow Weep for Me" with soul, plays a strong solo on Horace Tapscott's "This Is for Benny" and displays his blues roots on "Paris Blues." However the highpoint is a burning rendition of "Scrapple from the Apple" that finds Criss and Farlow engaged in torrid trade-offs. So overall this CD is more rewarding than it might appear at first glance. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

     Hidehiko "Sleepy" Matsumoto (1926-2000) was one of the best jazz sax players in Japan. His nickname was given by an American soldier when he was playing in a US military camp after the war. A true giant on tenor and flute, his contributions to the jazz industry of Japan were many and recognized by many awards and honors. This record, made in 1976 in a one-horn quartet setting, showcases Matsumoto's brilliant playing on both tenor saxophone and flute. He is a true master of both instruments and it is a great pleasure to hear him beautifully recorded by the people of Three Blind Mice.

     This is a compilation of tracks culled from various projects the Buena Vista Social Club members have done individually. The CD is almost as varied as the original BVSC release, with performances which add to our appreciation of the artists on that record. These recordings are no more than 12 years old, and the sonic quality is at time breathtaking. When I first saw this CD I automatically assumed this was just another way of cashing in on the Cuban music phenomenon; perhaps is still is, but there are quite a few gems in this compilation and they are every bit as good as what appeared on the original BVSC.

     Oliver Nelson would gain his greatest fame later in his short life as an arranger/composer but this superior session puts the emphasis on his distinctive tenor and alto playing. In a slightly unusual group (with vibraphonist Lem Winchester, organist Johnny "Hammond" Smith, bassist George Tucker and drummer Roy Haynes), Nelson improvises a variety of well-constructed but spontaneous solos; his unaccompanied spots on "All the Way" and his hard-charging playing on the medium-tempo blues "Groove" are two of the many highpoints. Nelson remains a vastly underrated saxophonist and all six performances on this recommended CD reissue (four of them his originals) are excellent. ~ Review by Scott Yanow, AMG.

     Music of Another Present Era remains Oregon's most enduring masterwork. Achieving a perfect balance of musical traditions from the East and West, ancient to future, they set the stage not only for a new transculturalism in jazz, but also created a lasting template for the fusion of musics from world traditions that would flower over a decade later. The four participants in Oregon, oboist and pianist Paul McCandless, guitarist and pianist Ralph Towner, upright bassist and pianist Glen Moore, and the late multi-instrumentalist Collin Walcott, operated on the premise that melodic ideas and expansive harmonies all contributed to a music that didn't bridge cultures, but erased them and eradicated them. This is a place where the astute dynamics of classical music meet the freedom of post-bop jazz in an inquiry of world rhythms and harmonics.      The fourth and final volume in Document's series assembles a wide range of Blind Blake material, from sides cut under the name Blind Arthur ("Guitar Chimes" and "Blind Arthur's Breakdown"), collaborations with vaudeville singer Chocolate Brown (a.k.a. Irene Scruggs), and even his sole two-part blues, the morbid "Rope Stretchin' Blues." Among the final pair of tracks, from mid-1932, the first, "Champagne Charlie Is My Name," is so atypical that some question whether it is even Blake at all; however, his last known side, "Depression's Gone from Me Blues," is a career-capping triumph -- just why he never recorded again is just one of the many mysteries which continue to swirl about this legendary figure. ~ Jason Ankeny
