"Of all the people I've played with, the most stimulating in an onstage situation was Freddie King. He could be pretty mean but subtle with it. He'd make you feel at home and then tear you to pieces... He taught me just about everything I needed to know... when and when not to make a stand... when and when not to show your hand. . . and most important of all... how to make love to a guitar." ERIC CLAPTON

FREDDIE KING: Live In Nancy, 1975 - fantastic 1989 French only 12-track set of volumes 1 & 2 of the series recorded live just a year before his untimely death. His performances were powerful and filled with emotional singing coupled with burning soulful licks played on his Gibson 355.

One of the most infamously acrimonious musical unions transpired between two of the leading purveyors of West Coast cool jazz: Chet Baker (trumpet) and Stan Getz (tenor sax). Their paths crossed only a handful of times and West Coast Live captures two of their earliest encounters in Los Angeles at the Haig on June 12, 1953, and the Tiffany Club on August 17, 1953. These recordings have been issued in Europe and Japan ad infinitum in varying degrees of quality, completeness, and often sporting erroneous data. However, enthusiasts should note that West Coast Live is the only release derived from producer/engineer Dick Bock's own master reels. For two men who purportedly would rather not be in the same room at the same time, Baker and Getz are able to create some legitimately brilliant improvisation... AMG (continued)

Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz, December 12, 2008 - Pianist Sam Reider was born in New York, but raised in San Francisco since he was a year old. He began studying classical piano at age 5 and became interested in jazz several years later. By age 11, he'd begun studying and playing jazz primarily, preferring the freedom of improvisation to the constraints of classical study.
In high school, Reider studied piano vigorously. By his senior year, he'd racked up several impressive awards, including Outstanding Soloist at the North Texas Jazz Festival. He'd also been made a member of the 2007 Monterey Jazz Festival's Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. Along with the members of his Uptown Trio - with bassist Jeff Picker and drummer Jake Goldbas - Reider was selected in 2007 by the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts to be the rhythm section of the Clifford Brown/Stan Getz All-Stars.
Reider is currently attending Columbia University, where he majors in English. He's just released an album with his Uptown Trio titled Without Strings. The group spent the summer of 2008 on a West Coast tour in support of the album, which took it to Yoshi's and Catalina's, among other venues from Washington to L.A.

Bernie Besman's Detroit based Sensation records is better known for its blues recordings. But in three months mid 1948 the label cut five sessions that go right to the roots of modern jazz. Milt Jackson, Sonny Stitt, Russell Jacquet and Sir Charles Thompson led these groundbreaking sessions.
The 1948 Sensation sessions w. Sonny Stitt, Milt Jackson, Sir Charles Thompson, Russell Jacquet, Leo Parker, Max Roach, J.J. Johnson, Kenny Clarke, John Lewis, Ray Brown. Detroit's Sensation Records material belonged to either the blues or R&B fields, but in three months in mid 1948 Sensation recorded five sessions that go right to the roots of modern jazz.
The music the musicans played wa at the heart of the organic changes happening in jazz, as it progressed from swing to both bop and the R&B flavoured modernism.

Lonnie Johnson - Steppin' on the Blues     Artist: Lonnie Johnson
     Album: Steppin' on the Blues
     Release Date: 1990
     Recording Date: Nov 4, 1925 - Aug 12, 1932
     Label: Columbia/Legacy
     Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 kbps
     Time: 57:32
     Size: 133 MB

Groundbreaking guitar work of dazzling complexity that never fails to amaze — and this stuff was cut in the 1920s! Lonnie Johnson's astonishingly fluid guitar work was massively influential (Robert Johnson, for one, was greatly swayed by his waxings), and his nononsense vocals (frequently laced with threats of violence — "Got the Blues for Murder Only" and "She's Making Whoopee in Hell Tonight" are prime examples on this 19-cut collection) are scarcely less impressive. Johnson's torrid guitar duets with jazzman Eddie Lang retain their sense of legend over seven decades after they were cut.

Ray Brown's got the right idea about making Christmas music: swing it, shout it, blues it up and down, riff with it, and, above all, never let it become boring. With a handful of top-line jazz vocalists on board, and a sax and guitar sitting in with the trio, he and his cool company can't miss the mirth of improvising or the mistletoe magic of rejuvenating a baker's dozen seasonal standards. Dee Dee Bridgewater demonstrates her versatility on "Away in a Manager" while the sublime Diana Krall scats with the creeping bass line on "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town." With Nancy King, Etta Jones, Marlena Shaw, Vanessa Rubin, and Kevin Mahogany singing, Brown delivers the goods musically (just check out his lyrical work on "Rudolph."). -- Martin Keller, Amazon.com

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2009!

For their set of Christmas related material, the Manhattan Transfer welcome such guests as trumpeter Jack Sheldon (on "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!"), Tony Bennett ("The Christmas Song"), trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison and tenor saxophonist Pete Christlieb. With arrangements provided for the backing orchestra by Johnny Mandel on a few numbers, highlights of this disc include "Snowfall," a Santa medley and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." A pleasing set of jazz-influenced Christmas music.
