AMG Rating: Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959) Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959)

Ornette Coleman's Atlantic debut, The Shape of Jazz to Come, was a watershed event in the genesis of avant-garde jazz, profoundly steering its future course and throwing down a gauntlet that some still haven't come to grips with. The record shattered traditional concepts of harmony in jazz, getting rid of not only the piano player but the whole idea of concretely outlined chord changes. The pieces here follow almost no predetermined harmonic structure, which allows Coleman and partner Don Cherry an unprecedented freedom to take the melodies of their solo lines wherever they felt like going in the moment, regardless of what the piece's tonal center had seemed to be. Plus, this was the first time Coleman recorded with a rhythm section -- bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Billy Higgins -- that was loose and open-eared enough to follow his already controversial conception. Coleman's ideals of freedom in jazz made him a feared radical in some quarters; there was much carping about his music flying off in all directions, with little direct relation to the original theme statements. If only those critics could have known how far out things would get in just a few short years; in hindsight, it's hard to see just what the fuss was about, since this is an accessible, frequently swinging record. It's true that Coleman's piercing, wailing alto squeals and vocalized effects weren't much beholden to conventional technique, and that his themes often followed unpredictable courses, and that the group's improvisations were very free-associative. But at this point, Coleman's desire for freedom was directly related to his sense of melody -- which was free-flowing, yes, but still very melodic. Of the individual pieces, the haunting "Lonely Woman" is a stone-cold classic, and "Congeniality" and "Peace" aren't far behind. Any understanding of jazz's avant-garde should begin here. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

De-Phazz’s musical gems pop up in various compilations and are so distinctive and infectious that the inevitable question is ”Where do I find more of this?” Problem is that, as their individual albums show, these guys are out on the erratic edge, mixing up latin, electronica/dance and jazz/hip-hop into something that’s at best addictively super-cool and at worst completely over the top. But the good news is that this ”Best of…” collection includes most of what you’re probably looking for including the wonderfully funky ”Hero Dead & Gone”, ”Godsdog” & ”Heartfixer”, the bizarrely brilliant Latin pastiches ”The Mambo Craze” & ”Something Special” and the quite stunning ”Jazz Music”, plus a great deal more. And the bad news? It’s missing two of their very best tracks – ”Jim the Jinn” (found on their ”Death by Chocolate” CD) and ”Riddim Wize” (from their ”Plastic Love Memory” compilation of lost tracks & alternative takes) – which if you like what’s here you’ll also want. Almost the perfect answer… but unfortunately life ain’t that easy.

This CD's title is a bit ironic, for violinist Stephane Grappelli and pianist Martial Solal (who are heard on a set of duets), although two of France's finest jazzmen, had only recorded together once before, and that was for a single selection in which they overdubbed their parts. This 1980 studio recording finds Solal reining in his adventurous style a bit so as to offer solid support for Grappelli. They perform six standards, two of Solal's pieces and a free improvisation.

For this set of unaccompanied seven-string guitar solos, Bucky Pizzarelli decided to focus on superior standards that he considered underplayed. It does seem ironic in hindsight that he included Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight," which after Monk's death in the 1980s was covered practically as much as a major pop tune. Most of the other songs are actually not all that obscure (Bix Beiderbecke's "Candlelights" and George Gershwin's "Blah! Blah! Blah!" come the closest). To Pizzarelli's credit, he does not stick exclusively to ballads and does a particularly fine job on Charlie Christian's "Solo Flight." A strong effort by an underrated but brilliant guitarist.

     Year: 2000
     Genre: Jazz
     Format, rate: mp3, 320kbs

Jane Monheit, at 22 years old, has made a stunning debut with the help of some of the finest players in the world: Kenny Barron, Ron Carter, Lewis Nash, David "Fathead" Newman, Hank Crawford, and Bucky Pizzarelli. From her first entrance on the supremely swinging "Please Be Kind," Monheit makes clear that she's the boss, even in such illustrious company. Her voice is about as close to flawless as a human can get, yet she's never coldly technical or aloof. While she's perfectly comfortable with the medium swing tempos of "More Than You Know," "Save Your Love for Me," and "Twisted," as well as the Latin groove of "My Foolish Heart," it are the ballads that really showcase Monheit's gift. If you don't get goosebumps listening to "Detour Ahead," "Never Let Me Go," and "Dindi," you probably don't have a pulse.

The somewhat nostalgic thrust of Monheit's repertoire and style might prove a liability over time. In this sense, the equally young Claudia Acuña, who has displayed considerable arranging and writing chops, is a step ahead of her. Yet Monheit's budding musical adventurousness is made evident by her subtle vocal overdubs toward the end of "Dindi." Her revelatory approach to classic songs is highlighted by her a cappella performance of the seldom-heard introductory verse to "I've Got It Bad." But on future albums, lest she fall into a retro rut, she'll need to work on realizing her potential as a musical risk taker. ~ David R. Adler, All Music Guide

This unusual duet session by violinist Stephane Grappelli and pianist Earl Hines had the potential for a lot of fireworks but is disappointingly relaxed. The emphasis is on ballads and, although Hines typically takes some chances with time during his solos, the music on the CD is on a whole overly tasteful and safe, well-played but not as memorable as it could have been. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Taken from the same live session that resulted in the Verve CD Four, this set (which was released for the first time in 1996) matches the great tenor Joe Henderson with the former Miles Davis rhythm section of pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb. Although Henderson had not played with the other musicians before, they blend together quite well and obviously inspired each other. In addition to a variety of standards, the quartet also performs a couple of then-recent songs ("Days of Wine and Roses" and "On a Clear Day [You Can See Forever]"), the ancient "Limehouse Blues," and Miles Davis' "Pfrancing." With recordings by Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter, Bo Diddley, and others, the Willie Dixon CHESS BOX is not only a great tribute to Dixon but also a great overview of Chicago blues history.

Certainly one of the most exciting musicians to come out of Acadiana is Wayne Toups. From the moment he bursts on-stage with his accordion, Toups is going full blast and the show is only going up from there. In short, Toups will blow your dance socks off.

His electrifying stage presence is due somewhat to his persona; often sporting a Hawaiian shirt, head band, and ponytail, he is a man in constant motion. It is also because he is a fantastic musician on his accordion, performing a brand of music he calls Zydecajun. As the name suggests, his style fuses the traditional Cajun country sound with the bluesier sound of zydeco, with a definite rock & roll twist and Cajun roots rock is what it is.

"Yarra Yarra is by a jazz duo from Finland formed by the late Edward Vesala's wife Iro Haarla and the lead saxophonist of Sound & Fury-- Pepa Päivinen. The album was recorded during the darkest and coldest day in Finland. A very melancholy and beautiful ballad album, rooted deeply in Finnish folk forms and jazz abstraction. This is also the first recording which includes many of Vesala's tunes since he died in 1999. A true dedication to him."

With this release, Italian pianist/arranger Claudio Angeleri and his orchestra render various slants on a portion of the Thelonious Monk discography. Recorded live at an Italian theater, the band kicks off the program with a straightforward spin of ”Epistrophy.” However, the fun really starts with the second piece ”Well You Needn’t,” featuring gritty solo endeavors by tenor saxophonist Marco Gotti, alto saxophonist Gianluigi Trovesi and others. Here and throughout, the band offers slight variations amid a few nicely placed twists and turns largely due to the leader’s interleaving horn charts. Moreover, the orchestra frequently uses components of any given tune as a means for extending mini-themes into various extensions of Monk’s inherent rhythmic ideologies. Angeleri’s extended solo on ”Pannonica” is awash with lyrically charged chord progressions to coincide with his delicate touch and strong sense of swing. Whereas the ensemble employs an animated and consistently upbeat approach on ”Eronel.”

It’s not all about reengineering Monk’s songbook! Yet, Angeleri’s visions cast a contemporary outlook to these works that have been endlessly rehashed by many of today’s jazz stars. They swing hard, and present a polytonal outlook. Angeleri and co should be commended here. Recommended. Glenn Astarita
