Milt Jackson and Strings - Feelings (1976) |

Artists: Milt Jackson and Strings Album: Feelings Label: Pablo / OJC Year: 1976 Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbit/s Time: 0.46:10 Size: 106 MB 1976's Feelings is an atypical set for Milt Jackson. Usually the epitome of cool jazz hipness, the title track finds the music's pre-eminent vibraphonist squandering his talents on Morris Albert's gloppy pop hit to the accompaniment of an uninspired, violin-heavy string section. Both concept and execution are dire, although Jackson does perk up briefly towards the end when he finally breaks away from the insipid melody into a fun duet with flutist Jerome Richardson. The remainder of the album picks up significantly from that abysmal beginning; producer Norman Granz and arranger Jimmy Jones wisely keep the orchestra well in the background, adding the occasional lush, Ellington-like flourish at the beginnings and endings of the tunes but otherwise staying out of the way of Jackson's sublimely melodic vibes. A pair of Brazilian tunes, Antonio Carlos Jobim's relatively rare ballad "If You Never Come to Me" and Abel Ferreira's "The Day It Rained," are among the highlights, putting the flutes of Richardson and Hubert Laws, as well as Tommy Flanagan's skillful piano, in their best settings. It's not the average Milt Jackson album, but after a potentially devastating start, Feelings turns out not to be half bad. ~ Review by Stewart Mason, AMG. |

John Lee Hooker - That's My Story (1960) |
Music » Blues |
 |
 |
Artists: John Lee Hooker Album: That's My Story Label: Original Blues Classics Year: 1960 Original Released: 1960 Quality: mp3; 128 kb/s Genre: Blues Size: 50.6 MB An acoustic date cut on February 9, 1960, this finds Hooker in top-notch form, running through a dozen performances in his instantly identifiable style. Except for three solo turns, Hooker is ably backed by bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes, both wisely following John Lee's idiosyncratic timing and changes. All the tunes are stretched out to comfortable lengths, and his interpretations of then-R&B hits like "Money" and Rosco Gordon's "No More Doggin'" are so vastly reworked that they sound like totally original compositions. A good choice to pick up if you run across a copy. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide |

Artist: Milt Jackson Album: A London Bridge Label: Pablo Year: 1982 Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbit/s Time: 0.51:46 Size: 119 MB AMG rating: One of three albums of material recorded by the Milt Jackson Quartet (which consisted of pianist Monty Alexander, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Mickey Roker) during a stay at Ronnie Scott's Club in London, this excellent set features the veterans playing in their usual style (bop, blues and ballad) but with a fresher repertoire than usual including "Impressions," "Good Bait" and Alexander's "Reggae/Later." The pianist often steals the show on this fine set; all three records from this gig are easily recommended. ~ Review by Scott Yanow, AMG |

Artist: Mimi Fox & Marian McPartland Album: Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz: Mimi Fox Label: Manhattan Beach Studios Year: 2008 [Broadcast date: 2008-11-21] Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbps Time: 54:55 Size: 123.7 Mb Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz, November 21, 2008 - San Francisco-based guitarist Mimi Fox was born in 1956 in New York City. Growing up, Fox recalls an eclectic mix of music in her home: Her father, an amateur drummer, enjoyed early jazz and had a collection of Dixieland albums. Her mother was a professional singer until Fox was 12, so the music of the American songbook was also present. Meanwhile, her older brother and sister were taken with the rock and pop sounds of the late '60s and early '70s. Fox began playing the drums in the school band at age 9. A year later, she picked up the guitar and began picking out Beatles and Monkees tunes. She would continue playing guitar throughout her teenage years, but with a focus on funk, R&B and Top 40 music. As a drummer, though, Fox remained connected to jazz, playing in several groups through junior high and high school. At age 14, Fox was encouraged by her friends and bandmates to check out John Coltrane, which she recalls as a seminal moment in her musical development. In 1979, Fox moved out to San Francisco, where she became an in-demand musician playing in diverse groups in and around the Bay Area. There, she also met guitarist Bruce Forman, who encouraged her to focus on jazz guitar full-time. Fox has since been recording and touring fiendishly, playing jazz clubs and festivals around the world and garnering accolades from fans and critics along the way. She has performed and/or recorded with such artists as Branford Marsalis, Abbey Lincoln, Diana Krall and Dr. Lonnie Smith, as well as fellow guitarists Charlie Hunter and Stanley Jordan. Fox continues a grueling touring schedule, and also finds time for jazz education. She serves as an advisor to the guitar department at the Jazz School in Berkeley, Calif., and has served as an adjunct professor at New York University. In addition, she has written a book about guitar methods for Mel Bay publishing, and has also created a CD-ROM-based jazz course called Jazz Anatomy. Her latest CD, 2006's Perpetually Hip, is her seventh release as a bandleader. The two-disc set features a guitar quartet on one disc and her solo work on the other. |

Patricia Barber - A Distortion of Love (1992) |

Artist: Patricia Barber Album: A Distortion of Love Label: Polygram Records B0000046KX Year: May 19, 1992 Genre: vocal jazz Format, bitrate: Mp3 224 kbs vbr Time: 56:47 Size: 93,9 MB Pianist and singer Patricia Barber's second album (and major-label debut) is a consistently interesting, but not always completely rewarding, array of original instrumentals, vocal standards, and surprise cover versions. The arrangement of "Summertime" that opens the program is eerie almost to the point of creepiness, and all the more effective for it: after a long instrumental prelude, Barber sings the lyrics over the most minimal bass-and-piano unison pedal point, her voice goosed with reverb and wailing softly like a ghost. "Subway Station #5," the original composition that follows, is nervous, jumpy, barely tonal, and moves niftily from a contrapuntal and polyrhythmic introduction into a straight swing section. The problem is that it lasts almost ten minutes, and by the seventh or eighth minute, its ideas seem pretty well played out. "Or Not to Be" and "Yet Another in a Long Series of Yellow Cars" suffer from similar treatment. But her singing on "You Stepped Out of a Dream" and, especially, her sweet and touching rendition of the soul classic "My Girl" are quietly spectacular. There's every reason to expect great things of her in the future. ~ AMG |

Artist: Patricia Barber Album: Companion (live) Label: Koch Records B0002IQOOG Year: 1999 Genre: vocal jazz Format, bitrate: Mp3 224 kbps vbr Time: 46:25 Size: 78,6 MB Companion was recorded in a special three-night series of shows in July, 1999 at Chicago's famed Green Mill jazz club — an unusually short amount of time to produce a live album. To mine as much material as possible from those nights the performances were run more like recording sessions than live shows, with the crowd reverently hushed. Patricia Barber is in her element and the only thing that seems to have suffered for the recording circumstances is the album's length — at seven songs and 40 minutes, it walks the line between standard EP and full-length size. |

Artist: Patricia Barber Album: Modern Cool Label: Koch Records B00026WTVA Year: 1998 Genre: vocal jazz Format, bitrate: Mp3 192 kbps Time: 1:07:42 Size: 93,4 MB The dark, smoky voice of Patricia Barber is quite haunting. On Modern Cool, she mostly sings downbeat songs at slow tempos. All but three songs are her own originals, and they deal with such subject matter as an "homage to beauty" that seems to connect painting one's face with prostitution, loneliness, mindless conformity, the "Postmodern Blues," and other such topics. Barber, whose piano playing is mostly very much in the background, comes across on this set as a pop/folk singer. Most of the jazz moments are provided by trumpeter Dave Douglas, who is on half of the selections and adds some excitement; guitarist John McLean, bassist Michael Arnopol, and drummer/percussionist Mark Walker complete the group. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
