The Three Sounds - Elegant Soul (1968) |

 |
Artist: The Three Sounds Album: Elegant Soul Label: Blue Note Year: 1968 Format, bitrate: Mp3 224 kbs vbr Time: 38:48 Size: 194 MB AMG Raiting: The centerpiece of this beautiful — and underappreciated at the time — album is Higgins' nine-plus-minute "Sittin' Duck," with Harris at his hooky gospelized best, playing the hell out of the changes and filling the measures with his requisite taste and feel. The two drummers shuffle in unison, and Estes' vibes articulate the melody with Harris adding a warmer dimension. The strings are rich, but are employed mostly in the codas and tags, adding to the dramatic weight of the tune, which is otherwise a long, dance-worthy strut. Elsewhere, the strings are varied in their texture on the gorgeous "Sugar Hill"; they outdo those in the hits of the day like Paul Mauriat's "Love Is Blue," or even Roger Williams' "Born Free." Ervin's "African Sweets" is one of the set's highlights, too. It lifts six notes from the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black" on top of a happening bass vamp and some slamming snare to introduce the cut. This is down-and-dirty soul-jazz dressed for Saturday night at the club; Harris beats the hell out of the piano's middle register in pure groove ecstasy. The added flamenco-style guitar and rough-and-rowdy flute solo add to an already heady brew. All of this is just the tip of the iceberg in a sense. Elegant Soul was — and could even be currently — dismissed with a casual listen as lightweight pop with a compelling rhythmic sense. But that would be selling it way short. This album warrants close listening to discern all that's happening in its production and arrangements. Whether it's on the dancefloor, for sampling, for feel-good or deep listening, or for finger-popping, it satisfies on all levels. [Previously only available as an import, Elegant Soul was reissued in 2008 as part of Blue Note Records' venerable Rare Groove series. ~ Thom Jurek at All Music Guide |

Sarah Vaughan - Favorites (1995) |

Artist: Sarah Vaughan Album: Favorites Label: Sony Music Special Products Year: 1995 Genre: Jazz Vocal Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kb/s Time: 30:51 Size: 72 MB REPOST with new link If you favor the softer, symphonic, syrupy side of Sarah Vaughan, this is a collection that might appeal to you. Although far from definitive, or even familiar, the set features Vaughan's pristine voice backed by an orchestra and string section, with every song being a slow ballad and treated as opera. The material is fairly obscure, there are none of her famous torch song hits, and although most will recognize "Fools Paradise," "Say You'll Wait for Me," and Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria," the remainder of the program is not all that memorable or timeless. There are much better and extensive compilations available from Vaughan, even on the overtly theatrical side. This one can only be recommended to completists or the ultra-curious. Michael G. The Three Sounds - Coldwater Flat (1968) |

Artist: The Three Sounds Album: Coldwater Flat Label: Blue Note Year: 1968 Format, bitrate: Mp3 320 kbs Time: 32:24 Size: 78,5 MB Live at the Lighthouse captured the Three Sounds at their jazziest, but Coldwater Flat, the first studio session pianist Gene Harris and bassist Andrew Simpkins recorded with new drummer Donald Bailey, takes a different path. For this date, the group decided to emphasize its pop side, recording the record with the lush Oliver Nelson Orchestra and choosing to cover such pop hits as "The Look of Love" and "Last Train to Clarksville." The closing number, "Star Trek," is actually an original by Harris, unrelated to the TV show. One of the primary attractions of the Three Sounds' sound was its simplicity and their ability to find so much variation within the trio format. That magic is somewhat lost with the orchestra, which tends to overwhelm the trio. More than anything, that is what prevents Coldwater Flat from ranking among the group's finest efforts, but the glossy production has its appealing moments as well, and the record does function well as pleasant background music, even if it veers too close to easy listening to be true jazz. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine at All Music Guide |

Artist: Chet Baker Album: Sentimental Walk in Paris Year: 1985 Genre: Jazz / cool, West Coast Quality: MP3 @320kbps Size: 120mb (RS.com) Covers + Scans Audio CD: January 8, 2002 Time: 44:28 Label: DRG REPOST with new links Chet Baker's Sentimental Walk in Paris is a collection of his Vladimir Cosma covers from the '80s. Although Baker was past his prime and had descended into heavy drugs, he was still an ace trumpeter. His gorgeous sound overcomes the arrangements (which are not bad, but tend to get cheesy at times), and fit perfectly into Cosma's mood music. In fact, Cosma produced the album and acted as Baker's handler during the recording sessions... |

Marian McPartland With Strings: Silent Pool (1996) |

Artist: Marian McPartland With Strings Album: Silent Pool Label: Concord Jazz Year: 1996 Genre: Jazz, Modern Jazz, New Emotional Music Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbps Time: 59:46 Size: 134.5 Mb Marian McPartland is one of those rare jazz musicians who has never developed what critics call a "mature" style. With her insatiable musical appetite — her influences range from Teddy Wilson and Duke Ellington to Bill Evans and Chick Corea — the 90-year-old pianist still considers herself a work-in-progress. Since she began recording for Concord in the late '70s, many of her best albums have focused on overlooked composers; her volumes on Benny Carter, Mary Lou Williams and Billy Strayhorn are full of sharp musical insights. But "Silent Pool," her latest CD, puts a well-deserved spotlight on her own body of work, and fulfills her longtime ambition of recording with strings. "Silent Pool" is a felicitous pairing of two unique musical sensibilities, with Alan Broadbent's string arrangements sharing center stage with McPartland's lyrical compositions and beautifully nuanced piano work. A brilliant pianist and composer himself, and a founding member of Charlie Haden's noir-inspired Quartet West, Broadbent has created an ideal setting for McPartland's compositions. His arrangements caress McPartland's melodies, remaining unafraid of her music's measured emotionality while never crossing the line into false sentiment or sweetness. His use of cellos in the introduction to "Ambiance" is unspeakably lovely, as is his deft borrowing from Debussy for the title track. "Twilight World," a tune often recorded by other musicians, is another highlight, played here with a dreamy, ethereal feeling. Best known for her National Public Radio show, "Piano Jazz," McPartland has interviewed an incredible array of musicians, playing duets with her subjects and holding forth with her wonderfully fey personality. Born Margaret Marian Turner in Windsor, England, McPartland fell in love with jazz listening to the BBC as a teenager in the 1930s. She met and married Chicago cornetist Jimmy McPartland during the war and gained a reputation among other musicians while working on New York's 52nd Street. Where Jimmy was a Bix Beiderbecke disciple, a traditional jazz purist, Marian absorbed new musical ideas — swing, bebop, bossa nova and various strands of modern jazz all found their way into her sound. Always open to new musical situations, McPartland jumped at the opportunity to record with strings, a dream only a handful of jazz musicians have fulfilled due to the prohibitive expense. With "Silent Pool," she has produced an album that rates among the best of such projects, joining such jazz legends as Charlie Parker, Stan Getz and Ben Webster. Recording with strings used to be considered a way to popularize improvisors; with the already beloved McPartland, it's simply one more path for a tireless musical explorer. ~ Andrew Gilbert |

Artist: B.B. King Album: Live at The Apollo Label: Verve - GRP Year: 1990 Genre: blues Format, bitrate: Mp3 256kbs Time: 44:24 Size: 84,2 MB Cover: 3 There are both good and bad points to this CD. Of the latter, the Phillip Morris "Super Band" is confined to background work with — other than a few spots for Plas Johnson's tenor — no soloists being heard from. As an ensemble, the all-star orchestra performs well, but is essentially anonymous. Also, despite the backing, B.B. King does not attempt to play jazz, a wasted opportunity. But, switching to the good points, Live at the Apollo is an excellent example of a strong B.B. King live performance. Somehow he always makes his combination of blues and familiar hits sound fresh. With a liberal amount of space set aside for his guitar solos, B.B. is in top form throughout the well-paced set, which is far superior to most of his overproduced studio sessions for MCA. Even if the big band is mostly irrelevant, this CD is recommended for B.B. King's singing and playing. ~ Scott Yanow at All Music Guide |

Artist: James Clay Album: A Double Dose of Soul Label: JVC Japan Year: 1960, release 2006 Format, bitrate: Mp3 329kbs Time: 40:16 Size: 92,5 MB AMG Rating: James Clay only led two record sessions before settling in obscurity in Texas, where he would not be rediscovered until the late '80s. Cannonball Adderley helped present him on Riverside in 1960, so it seemed fair that Clay utilized several of Adderley's sidemen on this session (cornetist Nat Adderley or vibraphonist Victor Feldman, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Louis Hayes) along with a young Gene Harris on piano. Clay splits his time between his lyrical flute and tough tenor, proving to be an excellent bop-based improviser. [The CD reissue adds two alternate takes to the original LP program, highlighted by Feldman's "New Delhi," "Come Rain or Come Shine," and Nat's blues "Pockets."] by Scott Yanow at All Music Guide |

Artist: The Three Sounds Album: Standards (compilation) Label: Blue Note Year: 1959, release 1998 Format, bitrate: Mp3 320 kbs Time: 1:01:48 Size: 146 MB Covers: 4 AMG Rating: *** Bubu's Rating: ***** During the prime Blue Note years (1958-1962) of the Three Sounds (a trio comprised of pianist Gene Harris, bassist Andy Simpkins and drummer Bill Dowdy), the group did an awful lot of recording for the label. This 1998 CD has a dozen titles that had never been released previously from four sessions in 1959 and 1962. The standards (only "Lights Out" is actually a blues) are made bluesy by the trio. Strangely enough, Harris often sounds closer here to Red Garland (especially in his chord voicings) than to his own style. The fact that the music is not in general as funky as usual may be why producer Alfred Lion did not release with the sessions when they were recorded. However, although not essential, the playing is enjoyable on its own terms, with highlights including "Makin' Whoopee, '" "Witchcraft," "Sometimes I'm Happy," "Red Sails In The Sunset" and "Lights Out." by Scott Yanow at All Music Guide |

Artist: Stacey Kent Album: Dreamsville Format: FLAC & mp3 (320k/s) Size: 308 & 127 MB (scans) Label: Candid Total time:53:40 Vocalist Stacey Kent may or may not be "the greatest ballad singer in half a century," as her PR claims, but her straightforward renditions of these by-request ballads are not at all generic. What makes them consistently delightful is her unique sound and delivery. There's a certain brassiness, a trumpet-like pointedness, in her voice, as well as a host of endearing idiosyncrasies. Listen to her pronounce the word "idea" in George and Ira Gershwin's "Isn't It a Pity?" Or deliver these remarkable lyrics from the same song: "What joys untasted!/You, reading Heine/Me, somewhere in China." And later, "My nights were sour, spent with Schopenhauer." Kent knows how to make every tune fit her own musical persona. Dreamsville includes a number of seldom-heard gems, particularly "You Are There" by Johnny Mandel and Dave Frishberg, "You're Looking at Me" by Bobby Troup, and the ever-stunning title track by Henry Mancini. She also presents perennial favorites like "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" and "Thanks for the Memory" (the latter not exactly a ballad). And although this is Kent's hour all the way, her band provides expert backing and more than a few surprises. The singer's husband, Jim Tomlinson, takes a break from tenor sax to play a sumptuous clarinet solo on "Polka Dots." And in the midst of Rodgers & Hart's "Little Girl Blue," pianist David Newton, bassist Simon Thorpe, and drummer Jasper Kviberg fall away, entering again only after Tomlinson and Colin Oxley perform a hushed tenor/guitar duet chorus. ~ David R. |
Artist: David Murray Quartet & Strings Album: Waltz Again Year: rec. 2002; rel. 2005 Label: Justin Time Records Genre: Modern Jazz Format: MP#@320/kbs Waltz Again is a strings project with a Murray twist: a quartet with familiar associates (Hamid Drake, Jaribu Shahid, Lafayette Gilchrist) plus a ten-piece string section handpicked from the Havana Philharmonic. Waltz Again begins with "Pushkin Suite #1," divided into seven parts and running a total of 26 minutes in length, shifting from being a near-classical piece to straightahead jazz and back again. This ambitious undertaking seldom lets up in its high energy. With its intricate changes, funky backbeat and spirited solos from bassist Shahid and pianist Gilchrist, "Dark Secret" would not be out of place as a Yellowjackets tune. It is the most satisfying track on the recording. Things come down a few notches in intensity on "Steps," a lovely ballad. Overall this is a dark and intensely moody project with one long, energetic solo after another from Murray. Indeed, Waltz Again can become a quickly wearying experience if swallowed whole. Its beauty is best appreciated when listened to with a breather between each track. By Ollie Bivens |
