Jimmy Smith - A Date With Jimmy Smith |

 |
 |
Artist: Jimmy Smith Album: A Date With Jimmy Smith 2LP Label: Blue Note Year: 1957 Format, bitrate: Mp3 320kb/s Time: 1:06:49 Size: 153 MB After cutting five albums with his trio, organist Jimmy Smith on Feb. 11, 1957, recorded with trumpeter Donald Byrd, altoist Lou Donaldson and tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley in a sextet that also included guitarist Eddie McFadden and drummer Art Blakey. Among the five songs recorded that day, two (lengthy versions of "Falling in Love with Love" and "Funk's Oats") are included on this LP along with a shorter trio rendition of "How High the Moon" from two days later with McFadden and drummer Donald Bailey in a trio. For the jam session date altoist Lou Donaldson has a duet with organist Jimmy Smith on "I'm Getting Sentimental over You," and together they match up forces in a sextet with trumpeter Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley on tenor, guitarist Eddie McFadden and drummer Art Blakey, playing lengthy versions of Mobley's "Groovy Date" and Duke Ellington's "I Let a Song Go out of My Heart." All of the Jimmy Smith jam sessions are easily recommended to fans of straightahead jazz; All of this music has been reissued by Mosaic on a definitive CD box set. by Scott Yanow at All Music Guide |

Artist: Lee Konitz and the Brazilian Band Album: Brazilian Serenade Label: Venus Records Year: 1995, release: 1999 Quality: Mp3@320 kbps Size: 116 mb Rather hard to find Japanese only release, not to be confused with it’s companion release, Brazilian Rhapsody, with Lee delving into the Brazilian Jazz vein, of which his sound and style seem to be a perfect fit for. Lee and the group perform well known and not so well known Brazilian tunes. This is not sleepy Bossa Nova. It's more like Jobim after a couple of cafezinhos. The sound quality, as on all the Venus releases, is superb. |

Alex Schultz - Think About It |

 |
Artist: Alex Schultz Album: Think About It Label: Severn Year: 2004 Genre: Blues Format, bitrate: mp3@320 kbps Time: 53:16 Size:122 mb If the sepia-toned photos of the guitarist aren't enough indication that this album is a throwback to his jump blues roots, the "no Stratocasters were used in the making of this recording," liner note should settle it. An experienced musician with an impressive résumé supporting blues acts such as William Clarke, Rod Piazza & the Mighty Flyers, and Tad Robinson (who contributes vocals to three tracks here), Alex Schultz doesn't use his first solo album as a showcase for his impressive guitar skills. In fact, after recording the bulk of the tracks in 2001, he returned to the studio in 2003 to add three more instrumentals -- the only originals on the album -- that feature his clean yet tough guitar solos. The result is a well-rounded, horn-dominated project that recalls the great jump blues of the '40s and '50s, but retains enough contemporary sheen not to seem dated. Schultz's snappy lead lines and sure sense of style guide these 13 tracks. Veterans Finis Tasby, Lynwood Slim, and Robinson provide vocals on ten tunes, and all are in stunning form. The various singers mesh with the instrumentals to provide a diverse but focused album that never lags. Schultz digs into his influences to cover songs from Charlie Rich, Jimmy McCracklin, and Eddie "Guitar Slim" Jones, among others, all of which are delivered with style, sophistication, and a genuine respect for the genre. The closing Finis Tasby tune shifts into swampy territory with just standup bass and brushed drums as accompaniment. There isn't a false note on the disc as it swings with finger-popping, toe-tapping energy that will impress even the most dedicated lover of classic jump blues. ~ Hal Horowitz, All Music Guide |

Herbie Hancock - Sextant (1973) |

Artist: Herbie Hancock Album: Sextant Label: Columbia/Legacy (1998) Format: FLAC & mp3 (320k/s) Size: 280 & 91 MB (scans) Total time: 39:02 When Herbie Hancock left Warner Bros. in 1971 after releasing three musically sound but critically and commercially underappreciated albums -- The Crossing, Mwandishi, and Fat Albert's Groove -- he was struggling. At odds with a jazz establishment that longed for his return to his Blue Note sound and a fierce consciousness struggle with free music and the full-on embrace of electricity since his tenure with Miles Davis, Hancock was clearly looking for a voice. Before diving into the commercial waters that would become Headhunters in 1973, Hancock and his tough group (including Billy Hart, Julian Priester, Dr. Eddie Henderson, Bennie Maupin, and Buster Williams) cut this gem for their new label, Columbia. Like its Warner predecessors, the album features a kind of post-modal, free impressionism while gracing the edges of funk. The three long tracks are exploratory investigations into the nature of how mode and interval can be boiled down into a minimal stew and then extrapolated upon for soloing and "riffing." In fact, in many cases, the interval becomes the riff, as is evidenced by "Rain Dance." The piece that revealed the true funk direction, however, was "Hidden Shadows," with its choppy basslines and heavy percussion -- aided by the inclusion of Dr. Patrick Gleeson and Buck Clarke. Dave Rubinson's production brought Hancock's piano more into line with the rhythm section, allowing for a unified front in the more abstract sections of these tunes. The true masterpiece on the album, though, is "Hornets," an eclectic, electric ride through both the dark modal ambience of Miles' In a Silent Way and post-Coltrane harmonic aesthetics. The groove is in place, but it gets turned inside out by Priester and Maupin on more than one occasion and Hancock just bleats with the synth in sections. Over 19 minutes in length, it can be brutally intense, but is more often than not stunningly beautiful. It provides a glimpse into the music that became Headhunters, but doesn't fully explain it, making this disc, like its Warner predecessors, true and welcome mysteries in Hancock's long career. - by Thom Yurek, AMG |

Artisis: SaxEmble Album: Saxemble Label: Qwest/Warner bros Year: 1995 Quality: FLAC - own cd.rip Time: 0.50:10 Saxemble is the first major-label release by a quintet that includes drummer Cindy Blackman and four reed players including James Carter. This quintet inevitably reminds one of the World Saxophone Quartet, for Saxemble also capitalizes on the resemblances between a four-horn combo and a vocal quartet to emphasize the doo-wop and gospel flavors in modern jazz. And like the WSQ, Saxemble attacks the middlebrow stolidity of mainstream jazz both from the low-brow perspective of '50s R&B and from the highbrow angle of '60s free jazz. It's a measure of the album's success that Saxemble finds the common thread that ties together pieces by Monk, David "Fathead" Newman, Eddie Harris, and Albert Ayler. -- Geoffrey Himes, Amazon.com. |

Artist: Grant Green Album: First Session Genre: Jazz / hard bop, soul-jazz, jazz funk Year: 1961 Quality: MP3 @320kbps Size: 117mb (RS.com) with 5% file recovery Covers Original Release Date: November 16, 1960 Time: 55:37 Label: Blue Note Grant Green's first-ever session as a leader -- recorded by Blue Note in 1960. The set features Green's guitar playing in a piano quartet, with rhythm by Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones -- about as fine a backing trio as Green could hope to find. We're not sure why Blue Note didn't issue this material at the time -- perhaps because they were trying to break Green as R&B-inflected soul jazz player, and this set had more of a straight jazz quality (like his Sunday Morning album) -- but whatever the case, it's all here now, along with 2 other tracks from a 1961 session with Sonny Clark on piano. Titles include "Seepin", "Sonnymoon For Two", "Just Friends", "Woody N You", and an early recording of "Grant's First Stand". ~ Dustygroove.com |

Artist: Jimmy Smith Album: Daybreak Label: West Wind Year: 2002 Genre: jazz Format: Mp3 320kb/s Size: 102 MB This Jimmy Smith album (not a compilation in the real sense of the word as stated in A.M.G.) was recorded at the end of his career between 1999 and 2001 when he made his last recordings. It consists of two parts: Tracks: 1/2/7/8 recorded at Livewire Studios, Sacramento, CA. April 2001. Tracks 4/5/6 recorded live in The Florida Keys Islamorada's Festival by The Bay, October 1999. Both parts live and studio are full of energy and beautiful soul-jazz bob. The sound is fresh and powerful and you can’t guess Jimmy’s age but only in the live tracks at the end by his harsh voice. The usual trio is added from time to time with nice guitar, sax and flute solos. The moods are: amiable, good-natured, energetic, exuberant, gritty, gutsy, joyous, laid-back, mellow, organic, passionate, playful, boisterous, confident, dramatic, effervescent, freewheeling, fun, greasy, lively, rambunctious, rousing, slick, sophisticated, sprawling, smart, uplifting, warm, and witty. Yet another Jimmy Smith release that worth to lean on. - Bubu Hans |

Artist - Benny Goodman Album - The Complete RCA Victor Small Group Recordings 3 CD Label - RCA Victor Years: 1935 - 1938, release - 1997 Quality - MP3@320 kbps Size: 143 + 156 + 145 mb Total time : (66:04)+(74:01)+(69:38) AMG Rating: The music of the Benny Goodman Trio and Quartets (with the clarinetist, pianist Teddy Wilson, drummer Gene Krupa and sometimes vibraphonist Lionel Hampton) has been put out many times through the years, including in other, earlier "complete" sets. This 1997 three-CD reissue not only has all of the regular recordings, but 20 alternate takes, two of which were previously unissued. Many of the performances (such as "After You've Gone," "Moonglow," "Dinah" and "Avalon") are quite famous, considered perfect examples of "chamber jazz," and veteran collectors will certainly enjoy hearing many of the alternates. Singers Helen Ward and Martha Tilton, trumpeter Ziggy Elman (on "Bei Mist Bist Du Schoen") and (after Krupa's departure) drummers Dave Tough and Buddy Schutz, bassist John Kirby and pianist Jess Stacy also make appearances. Classic music with many exciting moments from the King of Swing and his famous sidemen. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

The work is really tremendous -- every bit as great as Dolphy's monumental studio albums for Prestige, and written and performed with a similar blend of the free, the lyrical, the avant, and the soulful! Of course, the players help a lot -- as the group includes Donald Byrd on trumpet, Nathan Davis on tenor, and the great Jack Dieval on piano. Titles include "245", "GW", "Serene", and "Springtime". Artist: Osie Johnson Album: Osie's Oasis Year: 1955 Release: 1999 Label: OJC Format, bitrate: MP3, VBR 195 kbps Time Approx 40 min Size: 69,80 MB In the 1950s and the first half of the 1960s, Osie Johnson was one of the most in-demand drummers in New York, making a countless number of recordings and working steadily in the studios. He started working professionally in 1941, was with Sabby Lewis' band in Boston (1942-1943), and then was in the military where he played in a Navy band (1944-1945). After five years freelancing in Chicago, Johnson was a member of Earl Hines' band during 1951-1953. Stints with Dorothy Donegan and Illinois Jacquet followed before he became a busy session musician, playing and recording with a who's who of mainstream (including Coleman Hawkins, Dinah Washington, Wes Montgomery, and Sonny Stitt). In addition to contributing tasteful and supportive drums, Osie Johnson was an occasional composer, arranger, and singer, leading sessions for Jazztone (1955) and RCA (1956). ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Artist: Mynta Album: Indian Times Format: FLAC & mp3 (320k/s) Size: 298 & 121 MB (scans) Label: verBra (1999) Total time: 51:15 The musical traditions of Sweden and India come together with a global range of influences to create the unique music of Mynta. A true cultural exchange between Indian tabla player Fazal Qureshi and classical vocalist Shankar Mohadevan and Swedish musicians. Mix in Swedish hammered dulcimer, the Indian santoor and tanpura, and the North African saz and this becomes an exotic sort of orchestra. With groups like Mynta, it's clear that Scandanavia is turning out the most fascinating and enjoyable world fusion around. ~ Craig Harris, AMG
