Achieving a perfect balance of musical traditions from the East and West, ancient to future, they set the stage not only for a new transculturalism in jazz, but also created a lasting template for the fusion of musics from world traditions that would flower over a decade later. The four participants in Oregon, oboist and pianist Paul McCandless, guitarist and pianist Ralph Towner, upright bassist and pianist Glen Moore, and the late multi-instrumentalist Collin Walcott, operated on the premise that melodic ideas and expansive harmonies all contributed to a music that didn't bridge cultures, but erased them and eradicated them. This is a place where the astute dynamics of classical music meet the freedom of post-bop jazz in an inquiry of world rhythms and harmonics. Standout tracks include "North Star," with its celebration of rural music and rhythmic invention; the up-tempo "Sail," which offers a killer trio of Walcott's sprinting tablas, Towner's frenetic 12-string playing, and Moore's inquiring bass; the intensely improvisatory "Shard/Spring Is Really Coming"; and the lilting "The Swan." This is fusion music, to be sure, but it's the kind of fusion musicians have been trying unsuccessfully to emulate for decades.  Artists - Itzhak Perlman & Andre Previn Album - A Different Kind of Blues Label - EMI/Angel Year - 1980, release - 1992 Quality - MP3@320 kbps Size - 83,6 mb Total time - 36:35 This looked like a debacle in the making on first glance -- Andre Previn, out of jazz for nearly two decades as of this session, indulging classical violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman, who had never played jazz before in his life -- but the two classical partners actually made a really charming album the first time around. Of course, Perlman had a lot of expert help as he waded into the jazz pool, for Previn wrote out all of the tunes and solos for him and populated the rhythm section with can't-miss stalwarts Shelly Manne on drums, Red Mitchell on bass, and Jim Hall on guitar. That wouldn't guarantee a great record all by itself (see the It's a Breeze review) but in this case, the results are swinging, musical, lyrical and inordinately entertaining. Like the proverbial bicyclist who took a long sabbatical but never forgot how to ride, Previn still had plenty of keyboard invention in his fingers, and his tunes are consistently witty. The catchiest tune of the lot also has the funniest title, "Who Reads Reviews" -- aimed no doubt at the anticipated pack of jackals who were expected to eat this album for breakfast. But Perlman gives an attractive account of himself, not quite swinging but creating an alluring illusion of jazz feeling; in the ballads, he sounds as if he had been definitely listening to a lot of Stephane Grappelli. A historical note: this record, now on CD, actually anticipated the rash of "crossover" albums by classical artists that didn't take hold until late in the 1980s. In the past, it was his trio with pianist Andre Previn that performed music from hit plays (most notably My Fair Lady). For this date it is Manne's regular quintet (with trumpeter Conte Candoli, tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca, pianist Russ Freeman and bassist Chuck Berghofer) that play seven themes from a now-forgotten television series (Checkmate) composed by Johnny Williams. None of the melodies caught on but at least they gave these fine musicians some fresh material to improvise on. You'd have to say that the old man still has plenty of wind in him, because this is a blowing session from start to finish, especially on tracks like "The Mark of Zorro" (versions of which open and close the album), "Where or When," and "Flip the Whip," when Phillips is joined by one or both of two fellow tenor men, James Carter and Joe Lovano. The rest of the time, he sticks with a rhythm section consisting of Howard Alden, Benny Green, Christian McBride, and Kenny Washington, though Duke Ellington's "In a Mellow Tune" is a duet with bassist McBride and "This Is All I Ask" pairs him with guitarist Alden. Alden especially also gets plenty of solo time in on what are really group performances. But that takes nothing away from the spry leader, who can roar on such numbers as the title tune and whisper with a husky tone on slow burners like "For All We Know." На фирме «Ампико» работали энтузиасты своего искусства, прекрасно разбирающиеся не только в механике и технике, но и в музыке. Они понимали также, какое значение могут иметь высококачественные записи таких пианистов, как Сергей Рахманинов, Иосиф Левин, Мориц Розенталь, Артур Рубинштейн. Благодаря техническим достижениям в создании совершенного механизма записи, позволяющего учесть практически все тонкости фортепианной игры, начиная от силы удара и кончая педализацией, мы теперь имеем возможность услышать, как играл Рахманинов не с помощью граммофонной пластинки 20-х годов, где, по выражению самого Рахманинова, рояль звучит как балалайка, а в живом исполнении на хорошем концертном рояле. В студии «Ампико» для изготовления музыкальных роликов (перфолент) использовался двухметровый кабинетный рояль фирмы «Мейсон энд Хэмлин». Но в принципе воспроизводящий механизм мог быть установлен и в трехметровый концертный рояль с использованием тех же самых музыкальных роликов. Нам неизвестно, были ли во времена бума механических роялей большие концертные инструменты с системой «Ампико», но в 1978 году такой рояль был оборудован в Англии. Это советский концертный рояль «Эстония» с хорошим тембром звучания, на котором можно прослушать все тридцать пять записанных Рахманиновым музыкальных роликов. Впечатление неописуемое, невероятное, поразительное! …И Рахманинова пригласили в студию прослушать готовые ролики. Сергей Васильевич сидел и слушал, не проявляя никаких признаков интереса или неодобрения, но перед тем как покинуть студию, он обернулся к руководителям и сотрудникам и сказал: - Джентльмены, я только что услышал, как я сам играю! In April of that year Edison offered him a contract to make ten sides for the gramophone. By the end of the year he had fallen out with the inventor, and signed an exclusive contract with Victor which was to continue until his death. But the gramophone contracts did not Preclude an artist from recording performances 'on perforated piano rolls'. Ampico had entered the reproducing piano race later than its great American rival, Duo-Art, and desperately needed a world famous artist in its catalogue if it was to be taken seriously. In 1919 it made overtures to Rachmaninov to persuade him to make some test recordings. These recordings were processed, and Rachmaninov was invited to the Ampico studio to hear the finished music rolls. He listened, apparently utterly unimpressed, but just as he was about to leave he is reputed to have turned to the Ampico officials and said: 'Gentlemen, I have just heard myself play'. What a marvellous testimonial! This was the beginning of an association which would last for ten years and produce 34 music roll recordings. He was still a hard bopper, although his "sheets of sound" solos were certainly among the most interesting, creative, and distinctive that bop had to offer in the late '50s. Stardust contains some highlights of two bop-oriented Coltrane dates from 1958: one is a July 11 session with trumpeter/flugelhornist Wilbur Harden, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb, the other is a December 26 session with Garland, Chambers, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, and drummer Art Taylor. At both sessions, Coltrane's playing is quite engaging. He is a lyrical, expressive ballad player on "Then I'll Be Tired of You," "Stardust," and "Time After Time," but he swings fast and aggressively on "Love Thy Neighbor" (the only track on this 39-minute program that isn't a ballad). And at both sessions, Coltrane is well served by Garland's piano and Chambers' bass. When Coltrane was playing alongside those jazzmen in Miles Davis' 1955-1957 quintet, he enjoyed a strong rapport with both of them -- and that rapport wasn't any less strong in 1958. It is no coincidence that Prestige's A&R department united Coltrane with Garland and Chambers so often; Prestige knew how compatible all of them were. Although not quite essential, Stardust paints a consistently attractive picture of Coltrane's 1958 output. [When Fantasy reissued Stardust on CD for its Original Jazz Classics (OJC) series in 1997, the July 11 session had long been available in its entirety (except for alternate takes) on a disc titled The Stardust Session; however, performances of "Then I'll Be Tired of You" and "Time After Time" (both from the December 26 session) had only been available on CD as part of the 16-CD box set The Complete Prestige Recordings.] -- Review by Alex HendersonREPOST with new links |

Art Pepper concluded a very successful tour of Japan with a concert in Yamagata that was recorded and released on two Storyville CDs. This second of two CDs taken from the final night of Art Pepper’’s 1978 Japanese tour features the great altoist (along with pianist Milcho Leviev, bassist Bob Magnusson and drummer Carl Burnett) exploring two of his originals ("The Trip,” and “Red Car"); a lyrical version of Michel Legrand’’s “The Summer Knows” and an intense rendition of “Caravan.” None of the Storyville sets have been reissued elsewhere, and each adds to the remarkable legacy of Art Pepper whose second career (covering 1975-82) was arguably even greater than his first. - AMG |
