When the premiere reissue producer Michael Cuscuna researched all known Pacific Jazz tapes attributed to Chico Hamilton, all he came across were three edited numbers from this session, two of which had appeared on a compilation and another only on a DJ sampler. But this release is due to the luck of a Canadian resident who was digging through a used record bin in his hometown of Brighton, England, where he found a copy of The Ellington Suite with the personnel listed from a later session and a near mint blank test pressing of what turned out to be the long lost Chico Hamilton original version with Dolphy. While producer Richard Bock may have thought Dolphy's playing was at times too radical, history proves him wrong. His mellow alto sax is a key ingredient of "In a Sentimental Mood," while his unique phrasing is central to the swinging "Just A-Sittin'and A-Rockin'." Dolphy's flute is not as aggressive as it would be in the next few years, but his playing on "Everything but You" provides a preview of what was to come later in his career. Dolphy's clarinet weaves underneath Nate Gershman's arco cello solo in the lovely "Day Dream." Of course, the work of guitarist John Pisano, bassist Hal Gaylor, and the leader should not be ignored, as their musicianship is of the highest order, too. Chico Hamilton's pianoless chamber jazz recordings for Pacific Jazz between 1955 and 1959 are important landmarks, but the discovery of this long-lost date adds to his many achievements. A handful of recordings for the Verve label were issued, with ensuing time spent studying at Columbia University. In 2004, a severe and near fatal spinal injury left Delano unable to play piano. Well before the affliction, this CD was recorded in 1996, but never released. Delano's maturity as a modern contemporary pianist is clearly evident, as he weaves wondrous golden post-bop messages of sonic substance. His fluidity and acumen are formidable, his ideas overflowing but not overbearing. On his three featured tracks, tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman's post-John Coltrane sound brings his vintage and progressive notions to bear, while losing none of the original voice he made so precious. Three standards with just the trio are all started slowly then ramped up, including a careful approach integrated into a bass walking take of "For All We Know," and an expected regretful piano during "Everytime We Say Goodbye," eleven minutes of stretched out discourse displaying the refined interpretive powers of Delano. Redman (who died in 2006, ten years after this date) joins on the sad, overpatient ballad "Too Long to Wait"; he's focused and reserved, but not lacking emotional depth for "Zoning," and works the effortless, slight tune "Sound Spirits" to a polished sheen. Delano offers advanced phrasings on the hard bopper "Inner Limits," showing his love of Chick Corea-cum-Bud Powell, as a flawless performer who can zoom along in supersonic fashion, but whose musicianship is more than just chops. The waltz "Summer Song" is where Delano asserts himself on a wistful level with shimmering axioms and loose-tight associations, formulating eminently listenable music. Bassist Doug Weiss is more than up to the task, especially on "For All We Know," and drummer Anders Hentze is solid, unspectacular, and timely. If more tracks with Redman were issued, this endeavor could rightly have been "with" rather than "for" Redman. As it is, this readily enjoyable CD marks not only the passing of a jazz giant, but bookmarks the past effort of a still young pianist making inroads. As of this 2008 release, Delano has made a full recovery. He is on the comeback trail, buoyed by the thought that this fine recording may inspire him to achieve further greatness. ~ Michael G. Although Bunnett is the leader, she is also very comfortable taking a backseat during numbers featuring the larger groups. Most tracks were recorded during their visit to Cuba as they moved around the country, covering traditional tunes such as the percussive and fun-filled "Quitate el Chaquetón," "A la Rhumba," and "El Diablo," with the infectious rhythm and heartfelt vocals adding to the fun of the sessions. Three songs feature a stunning ten-piece vocal choir, Desandann, who sing in Patios, the language of their Haitian ancestors. The session is highlighted by Bunnett's lyrical flute (especially on "Nan Fon Bwaa") and her spirited soprano sax (showcased on her originals "Arrival" and "Movin' On"). It is impossible to listen to this CD and not be caught up in the celebration; this highly recommended CD is easily one of Jane Bunnett's greatest accomplishments during her career. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |

During his long career Ben Webster did many fine records, but to these ears his best were together with the Oscar Peterson Trio. These records for Verve in the 50ths and 60ths were studio recordings, but this one, broadcasted in colour for German television, is live ! Actually it was the second part of a splendid concert. The first part was a solo concert by Oscar Peterson, who was during the 70ths at the peak of his powers. For the second part Oscar Peterson used NHOP, The Viking, the fastest bassplayer ever, while Ben had his longtime drummer at his side: Tony Inzalaco. As always Ben is sitting on a chair and very much enjoyed playing with his old friend: Oscar. The greatest jazzpianist ever, also had a ball and gives Ben all the support he needed. This is not only a great concert, but also one with historical value. First this is the only recorded live recording of these giants, Second it was the last great concert of Uncle Ben, as he died the next year in Amsterdam. It is a great concert, with love and understanding, and I enjoyed every minute of it! Her one major record was My Hour of Need, a session she cut in 1962 with an impressive stable of Blue Note artists, including Ike Quebec, Grant Green, Herbie Lewis, Milt Hinton, Billy Higgins, and Al Harewood. Greene was the first vocalist Blue Note signed to an exclusive contract, and she was also the only vocalist the label signed during the '60s, which suggests the lack of success the record achieved. A native of Buffalo, NY, Greene began singing as a child. She continued to sing throughout her teens, although she was planning a career in medicine. Her first big break arrived when she filled in for a sick vocalist in Cozy Cole's band. He asked her to join his group, but she refused. Eventually, she decided to pursue a career in music and began singing regularly at venues along the East Coast, as well as Chicago. Slowly, she built up a following among audiences and fellow vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Dinah Washington, and was able to play venues in London and Germany. |

Odyssey: 1945-1952 chronicles the master trumpeter in small groups, big bands, a session with strings, and also some blues. Among the rare treats on the collection are a full-fledged Gillespie big band score "Interlude (A Night in Tunisia)," performed here with the Boyd Raeburn Orchestra, where Gillespie worked for a couple of weeks at a time in both 1944 and 1945. The inimitable "Groovin' High" is played by the Dizzy Gillespie Sextet of which Charlie Parker, Cozy Cole, and Slam Stewart were members. The song is heard here as a classic bebop contrafact based on the chord progression of "Whispering," which became a million-seller for Paul Whiteman. Disc one also features "Slim's Jam," a song that is ripe with Gillespie conversation, including one with sax great Charlie Parker about his reed. This song makes you feel as if you are right there in the recording session. The Dizzy Gillespie All Star Quintet play a humorous "Salt Peanuts" and features the young Sarah Vaughan singing "Lover Man." Disc two includes music by such great bands as the Ray Brown All Stars, the BeBop Boys, who featured Dizzy Gillespie tearing down the house with such jazz notables as James Moody, Milt Jackson, and Hank Jones, playing such great songs as "Moody Speaks" and Boppin' the Blues." Disc three has some of the best excitement from Gillespie's musical diary and provides a fascinating insight into his life and times with such jazz giants as Percy Heath, J.J. Johnson, Art Blakey, and Stuff Smith on "Oh Lady Be Good," "Love Me Pretty Baby," and "Caravan." Savoy has reissued one of the best documentations of Gillespie's artistry in recent times. For those who are just learning about the great Dizzy Gillespie or for those who have an extensive collection of his music, this box set supplies a comprehensive review of his timeless musical itineraries during 1945-1952. As he swings, swaggers and finger-pops in vintage Rat Pack style these 18 hit recordings confirm he had every reason to be confident. Annoyingly, few release/recording dates are given in the liner notes to this 18-song compilation. It doesn't spell it out, but basically most of this is taken from Bobby Darin's mid-'60s Atlantic albums, with early-'70s live versions of "Mack the Knife" and "Beyond the Sea" (note that Darin's famous original hit recordings of those tunes are not included on this CD). Getting past this packaging shortcoming, it's a decent sampling of the more pop-swing-oriented material Darin cut during the time, the selection heavily emphasizing popular standards and show tunes of both the uptempo and ballad variety. Darin's interpretations of "The Shadow of Your Smile," "Mame," "It's Only a Paper Moon," and "Don't Rain on My Parade" are all here, for example. He did a lot more in this vein than what's on this disc, of course, but it's a good representation of his skills with such material, which were in a league with those of Frank Sinatra, though these recordings have not attained the iconic status of the more celebrated of Sinatra's similar outings. Fans of Darin's earthier side might not be in the mood to hear a collection that focuses so intently on his more poppy one. But he does let some bluesy shades into the vocals and arrangements at times, as on "After You've Gone" and more particularly "Feeling Good," which is the highlight with its smoky jazz organ and sultry pace. All three of the shows are adequately recorded, and the performances are all quite solid, even if they're not earth-shattering. However, since it's unclear whether or not these are full performances (although the impression is that they're not), this may not be of considerable interest to the hardcore collectors that are its main audience, given that the collection consists merely of highlights. I don't think so although Tatum, of course, ran him close. In this set from 1974 the great man was joined by Barney Kessell on guitar and Niels Henning Oersted-Pederson on bass and it says much that Peterson towered so much above the other two that their true status was somewhat submerged. Prior to the arrival of Barney and Niels, our man had played a couple of unaccompanied numbers; "I Should Care" and a particularly impressive version of "This Nearly Was Mine". I've always felt the Rodgers and Hammerstein tune never reaches its potential when sung in the semi-operatic manner demanded of it in "South Pacific" and here Oscar totally stripped it of any sentimentality even to the extent of adding some stride-like touches without losing its harmonic attraction. Although not in the driving seat, Barney did have a couple of decent solos but it is my feeling that a guitarist - any guitarist - is on a hiding to nothing when Oscar is in full flight. Despite its hopelessly gauche cover -- one can only presume Taylor had no say-so in the choice of artwork used -- Taylor's approach to three Cole Porter tunes with a trio and three of his own with a quintet is a lively combination, and one which, in lieu of his later work, reveals the construction of his system of improvisation better than his later records do when he is playing from the middle of it. Accompanied by Dennis Charles on drums and Buell Neidlinger on bass, Taylor dives deep into Porter's "I Love Paris," a shifty little pop song. Taylor goes head to head with Neidlinger in a contrapuntal statement of the melody -- illustrated by chord changes which are extrapolated from the melodic sequence -- against harmony before actually flowing into the main theme of the tune for a moment before kicking the rhythm section loose and treating the tune percussively, almost as if it were a series of rhythm changes instead of harmonic ones. On the title track it's much the same, except Taylor's tenderness shines through in his lilting right hand in the middle as he trades fours with Charles. There's a wonderful cut-time tempo here, and Taylor starts building scales harmonically in his solo only to answer them with the melody and original harmony. With his own three tunes, with trumpeter Ted Curson and saxophonist Bill Barron added to the fray, Taylor takes more chances. On "Little Lees (Louise)," he scores in an elaborate melody that is played without dissonance by the horn section as he and Neidlinger play entirely in counterpoint. But here, too, there is a sublime lyricism at work; there are no extra notes or chords, and everything falls in line with the chromatic architecture Taylor composes with. "Maities Trophie" is Taylor ringing in a blues jam à la Ellington -- or at least his version of Ellington. The solos by Curson and Barron are tight, narrative, and bordering on swing, but all that's taken care of by Taylor's solo. Love for Sale is a delightful anomaly in Cecil Taylor's long career. ~ Review by Thom Jurek, AMG. |
