The talented young pianist Jacky Terrasson and his trio (with bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Leon Parker) find something new to say on a few standards (including a rare up-tempo version of "For Sentimental Reasons") and introduce five of Terrasson's originals. Although he has does not have an original style yet, Terrasson displays a great deal of potential for the future. Highlights include "I Should Care," "Just One of Those Things," and a medley of his "Reach" with "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." ~ Scott Yanow, AMG

Stan Getz - The Complete Roost Recordings (1950-54)     Artist: Stan Getz
     Album: The Complete Roost Recordings
     Label: Roost / Blue Note
     Years: 1950-1954
     Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbit/s
     Time: 03.24:11
     Size: 155 + 166 + 147 MB
AMG Rating: Stan Getz - The Complete Roost Recordings (1950-54)

The Complete Roost Recordings is a three-disc, 59-track box set that contains all of the recordings Stan Getz made for the Roost Record label in the '50s. The set includes all of his officially released sessions — including the date led by guitarist Johnny Smith, the live performances with Count Basie, and a full disc of live performances with his quintet — as well as many unreleased and alternate takes. Roost was the first label Getz recorded for as a leader, and what's surprising about these sessions is how mature he sounds here. He had already arrived at his full, rich tone and was able to improvise with skill and grace. That's what makes this box set so rewarding — it's not only historically important, but it offers a wealth of excellent music. ~ Review by Leo Stanley, AMG.

Bob James - Touchdown (1978)     Artist: Bob James
     Album: Touchdown
     Label: Tappan Zee / Koch
Original Year: 1978, Release Date: Aug, 2005
     Recording Time: 34 min
     Format/Bitrate: MP3/320 kbit/s
     Size: 80 mb

With Creed Taylor no longer serving as his producer, Bob James loses something on 1978's TOUCHDOWN.
James calls in a talented orchestra and some of the jazz world's best for support - Hiram Bullock, Eric Gale, Gary King, Ron Carter, Steve Gadd, Mongo Santamaria, Dave Sanborn, Hubert Laws, Earl Klugh, Jon Faddis, and Randy Brecker are among the players here-but still manages to deliver a somewhat formulaic recording.
Regardless, TOUCHDOWN was among James' most successful albums.

Roy Haynes - Birds Of A Feather (A Tribute To Charlie Parker)
Artist: Roy Haynes, Dave Holland, Dave Kikoski, Kenny Garrett, Roy Hargrove
Album: Birds Of A Feather (A Tribute To Charlie Parker)
     Label: Dreyfus
     Year: 2001
     Format: MP3 320 kbps
     Time: 60:04
     Size: 159 MB

It would seem an odd choice for a drummer to be paying tribute to a saxophonist, but that odd prejudice flies out the window when considering that the saxophonist in question is Charlie Parker. So much has been said out about Bird, his career, and his pervasive influence that there is very little present in today’s vast jazz landscape that cannot be traced back to his immense contribution to the art. With his latest release, Birds of a Feather: A Tribute to Charlie Parker, legendary drummer Roy Haynes shows that there is still a need for a fresh perspective on familiar territory.
Dripping with talent, Birds of a Feather is not just about the single contribution of a solitary member of the quintet. Haynes is not the focal point here, though he still has the strongest hand in guiding the shape and feel of many of the tracks. Instead, he has assembled a collection of musicians who are genuinely intrigued by the prospect of conversing and sharing, immersing themselves in what Charlie Parker, and the music that represents him on this disc, has come to mean to their art.

     Year: 1988
     Genre: Be-bop, Cool Jazz
     Quality: MP3@320 kbps

Terms such as supergroup and all-stars may understate the stature of this imposing 1988 sextet. Frank Morgan, at the peak of his personal renaissance, meets two front-line players who had been at the forefront of jazz’s new directions for two decades, a bass/drum team for the ages, and the period’s brightest young pianist. Beyond its individual name power, Reflections also verifies that Henderson and Hutcherson played just as magnificently in years when listeners weren’t paying attention, and that the bebop-rooted Morgan (who also recorded a Charlie Parker tribute album, Yardbird Suite, with this rhythm section) could function just as convincingly in the more contemporary realm of Miller’s “Old Bowl, New Grits” and Hutcherson’s “Starting Over.” The session is filled with memorable contributions, from Morgan’s chorus on the title ballad to a bonus-track “Caravan” with jaw-dropping drumming from Al Foster. ~ Concord Music Group

One of the finest jazz trumpeters of the post-Dizzy Gillespie generation is Freddie Hubbard, a giant of hard bop from the late 1950s on through the `80s. For health reasons, Hubbard has greatly cut back on his performing in recent years, which all the more reason to celebrate ON THE REAL SIDE, a tribute disc to which the tributee himself happily contributes. The New Jazz Composers Octet consists of some great younger (than Freddie) musicians, including Jimmy Greene (saxophone) and Steve Davis (trombone), playing seven Hubbard originals (including the newly written title track). While SIDE doesn't feature much playing from Hubbard himself, the band and the album both evoke the fiery, durable style of Hubbard at his best.Down Beat (p.80) - 3 stars out of 5 "Horn ensemble lines are full and the playing individual and collective is fiery....Hubbard sticks and moves, using short phrases musical haiku actually seldom for more than a chorus."
JazzTimes (p.64) - "Hubbard, playing flugelhorn only, is one of the soloists on six of the seven tracks, but the focus here is as much on the charts and the Octet, a fruitful mix of jazz elder and nascent jazz masters."

Originally released as two separate LPs (and reissued in 2004 as a double CD package) THE NIGHT OF THE COOKERS, VOLUMES 1 & 2 puts trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan, two of the biggest guns of the hard-bop era, head to head throughout an extended live set. James Spaulding plays alto sax and flute, balancing out the brighter, brassier timbres of Hubbard and Morgan, and a crack rhythm section of pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Larry Ridley, drummer Pete La Roca, and conga player Big Black keeps things simmering. Each disc contains only two compositions, Clare Fischer's "Pensativa" and Richard Carpenter's "Walkin'" make up Disc One, and two Hubbard compositions, "Jodo" and "Breaking Point" occupy the second. Since each cut clocks in at approximately 20 minutes, there is ample solo time for each musician; the approach here is all about stretching out over solid grooves. Spaulding and Mabern turn in agile improvisations, but the spotlight is on the two trumpeters. Morgan's playing pales a bit besides Hubbard's on this date--understandably, as Hubbard is tirelessly playful and acrobatic. There are chops galore on this classic hard-bop document, and fans of the era (and of these musicians in particular) will find much to admire.
