Tania Maria - Love Explosion (1983) |
Music » Jazz » Latin |

Artist: Tania Maria Album: Love Explosion Label: Concord Records Year: 1983 Format, bitrate: Flac@Level 8 Size: 192 MB Genre: Brazilian Jazz AMG Rating: 3 stars Brazilian jazz vocalist and pianist Tania Maria's career has spanned over three decades, starting when she was just 13 and she fronted a band of professional musicians organized by her father, who was a metal worker and gifted amateur musician. He had encouraged her to study piano so that she could accompany him on his weekend jam sessions, but her musical talent grew beyond those small performances. Maria's four sisters also had musical talents, but they eventually grew from their impoverished roots to become professionals, a path that Maria was on herself as well. She attended law school for two years, then married and had a family. The pull of music was too strong, however, and in 1971 she released her first album in Brazil, Olha Quem Chega. In the late '70s she moved to Paris and expanded her career, touring internationally. A date in Australia brought her to the attention of guitarist Charlie Byrd, who hooked her up with Carl Jefferson, head of Concord Records. The label provided her with her first international commercial success with her 1984 album Come With Me, and continued to record her music and issue it to an international audience. Based in New York since the '80s, Maria still sings the pop and blues-influenced music that brought her fame, releasing several albums in the '90s. Her first album of the new millennium, Viva Brazil, was also released by Concord Records. AMG: Stacia Proefrock |

Bob James - Angels Of Shanghai (2007) |

Artist: Bob James Album: Angels Of Shanghai Label: Koch Records Year: 2007 Genre: Jazz, Smooth Jazz Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbps Time: 50:50 Size: 114.9 Mb JazzTimes (p.117) - "Enhanced with the exotic sounds of a region where the pianist has performed many times and for which he obviously has affection." Legendary jazz artist Bob James presents his newest project, featuring Nathan East, Harvey Mason, Jack Lee and Lewis Pragasam. A unique East meets West musical exploration - contemporary jazz artists interacting with young musicians from Shanghai performing on traditional Chinese instruments. Ancient sounds blend with modern technology and creativity to produce an experience with no boundaries. With his easygoing keyboard style and genial compositions, Bob James virtually defines smooth jazz. ANGELS OF SHANGHAI, however, is something of a departure for him, as James fuses his sweetly lyrical style with elements of traditional Chinese folk music. He seamlessly melds the stylings of his core quartet (Harvey Mason, Jack Lee, Nathan East) with Asian modes, scales, and instrumentation (pipa, erhu, dizi) to create an atmospheric, coolly exotic, and occasionally funky sonic travelogue. And get ready to be amazed by the revamped version of "Angela," better known as "Theme From TAXI." |

Artist: John Lee Hooker Album: This Is Hip Year: 1992 Label: Charly Blues Masterworks, Vol. 7 Format: MP3 @320kbps Size: 85mb (RS.com) Includes Covers + Liner Notes REPOST with new link John Lee Hooker gives new meaning to the Muddy Waters phrase "The blues had a baby and they named it Rock and Roll". There are other Hooker collections available, but Charly was the label that got the really cool stuff together back when hardly anyone realized what truly cool music sounded like (it was the age of disco when 'the most popular music' totally [stunk]). Anyhow, this collection has a mix of well known and obscure tunes, all of which are classic rock archetypes. |

Artist: Lee Konitz and Harold Danko Album: Wild As The Spring Time Label: Candid Year: 1984 Quality: mp3, 320 kb/s Size: 121 mb Two gifted players join forces together and the result inevitably produces music of consistently superior quality. This album is just one more example of a quite outstanding body of work. REPOST! |

Travis "Moonchild" Haddix - Daylight At Midnight (2008) |

Artist: Travis "Moonchild" Haddix Album: Daylight At Midnight Year: rel. 2008 Label:Earwing Music Company Format: MP 3 @320 Kb/s Time: 39:20 Size: 88 Mb |

1950,1954: Louis Armstrong - New Orleans Nights |
Traditional Jazz, Armstrong Louis |
Artist - Louis Armstrong Album - New Orleans Nights Label - Decca/Verve Years - 1950, 1954 Quality - MP3@320 kbps Size - 74,98 mb Total time - 36:06 Verve's 2008 reissue of New Orleans Nights, a Louis Armstrong album originally released on Decca in 1957, is a compilation of recordings made in 1950 and 1954 by two different bands operating under the noble mantle of Louis Armstrong and the All Stars. "Panama," "New Orleans Function," "My Bucket's Got a Hole in It," and "Bugle Call Rag" testify to the integrity of the earlier group, with Armstrong leading Jack Teagarden, Barney Bigard, Earl Hines, Arvell Shaw, and Cozy Cole, who is granted extra long drum breaks during the "Bugle Call Rag." On "Struttin' with Some Barbecue" and "Basin Street Blues," Tea is replaced by Trummy Young, Hines by Billy Kyle, and Cole by Kenny John. Tenor saxophonist Bud Freeman sat in on "Basin Street"; it's a pity that he didn't participate on "Barbecue," as the warmth and ease that characterizes this elegant update of Lil Hardin Armstrong's magnum opus would have fit Freeman's personality like a favorite pair of argyles. ~ arwulf arwulf, All Music Guide |

Bill Watrous Big Band - Space Available (1997) |
Music » Jazz » BeBop |
Artist: Bill Watrous Album: Space Available Label: Double Time Jazz Year: 1997 Format, bitrate: Mp3 320 Kbps Time: 70:55 Size: 144 Mb In the mid-1970s, trombonist Bill Watrous led a couple of notable big band albums for Columbia. Since relocating to the Los Angeles area in the '80s, Watrous has put together jazz orchestras on a part-time basis to play at local clubs. Finally, in 1997, a recording was released by the more recent version of the Bill Watrous Big Band. Featuring arrangements by Tom Kubis, Shelly Berg, Gordon Goodwin, Ken Kaplan and Frank Perowsky, the Double-Time set is largely straight-ahead but not exactly predictable. Most of the eight selections have their complex sections, but always swing. The warm-toned trombonist is the main soloist (fully showcased on "My Foolish Heart" and "My Romance"); powerhouse pianist Shelly Berg is the top supporting player, and other key voices include Gene Burkurt and Bill Liston on tenors, trumpeters Bob Summers and Steve Huffsteter, and altoist Sal Lozano. The music is as rewarding as one would expect, considering the caliber of these players, and is easily recommended to modern big-band fans. — Scott Yanow |

Sonny Stitt - Personal Appearance |

Artist: Sonny Stitt Album: Personal Appearance Label: Verve Quality: FLAC & MP3@320 Size: 272 MB & 206 MB Time: 47:29 While the comparisons to Charlie Parker were inevitable throughout a good part of his career, Sonny Stitt was very much his own man. He is in top form throughout this 1957 session made for Verve, featuring a very young Bobby Timmons on piano, bassist Edgar Willis, and drummer Kenny Dennis. Alternating between alto and tenor saxophone in a program consisting mostly of standards, Stitt is equally at home on each horn. His soulful tenor shines in "Easy Living," while the loping "Autumn in New York" showcases his exuberant alto. Timmons, who had just made his recording debut as a sideman with Kenny Burrell the previous year, hints at his potential with a blues-drenched solo in "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To." Long out of print and one of Stitt's best recordings at this point in his career, Personal Appearance was digitally remastered and reissued in a slim-line CD mini-record jacket as a limited edition; it is available until June 2007. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |
