     Originally titled More Hits of the 50's and 60's, Frankly Basie: Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra, a salute to Frank Sinatra by Count Basie's Orchestra, is mostly closer to dance music than jazz. Billy Byers's arrangements are pleasing enough but in general the music is rather easy-listening with few exciting moments and most solos being quite brief. The original 12-song program is augmented by a "new" alternate take of "Hey, Jealous Lover" and two selections ("My Kind of Town" and "Come Rain or Come Shine") taken from the LP Basie Picks the Winners. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG

     Since his days with Genesis, Steve Hackett had showcased his classical guitar skills on solo pieces like "Horizons." He had a strong affinity for such material and usually included one solo guitar piece on his own albums. By 1980-81, Hackett had amassed enough material to release an entire album of his classical work and pitched the idea to his label Charisma. The record company felt such a release wouldn't prove commercially viable -- they saw Hackett as a "rock" artist -- but the guitarist believed strongly in the project. To this end, he began recording tracks for it on his own time and with his own money. Even after the success of Steve's 1982 album Highly Strung and its hit single "Cell 151," Charisma still vetoed the idea. So Hackett left the label and took his project to a small label called Lamborghini, who released the album under the title Bay of Kings in 1983. It turned out to be one of the guitarist's strongest efforts ever, truly a labor of love, and sold in respectable quantities. Hackett had taken great care recording his guitar, and his efforts shone throughout this gorgeous-sounding album. The
beautiful guitar work was complemented in places by strings and flute (the latter played by Steve's brother John). There were remakes of two of Steve's earlier pieces, "Horizons" (from the Genesis album Foxtrot) and "Kim" (from Steve's Please Don't Touch LP), both of which improved on the originals. ~ Robin Platts, AMG

     One of the staples in the Count Basie discography, April in Paris is one of those rare albums that makes its mark as an almost instant classic in the jazz pantheon. April in Paris represents the reassembly of the original Count Basie orchestra that define swing in the 1930s and 1940s. The title track has come to define elegance in orchestral jazz. Though only ten tracks in its original release, seven alternate takes have now been incorporated into Verve's re-release of the original session tapes. Other key tracks include "Corner Pocket" and "Magic," both of which are also featured in the alternate takes. Recorded in 1955 and 1956, April in Paris proved Count Basie's ability to grow through modern jazz changes while keeping the traditional jazz orchestra vital and alive. ~ Christopher Fielder, AMG

Не будем спорить с профессиональными музыкальными критиками (они ведь просто отрабатывают свой хлеб) а составим своё собственное мнение, прослушав эту аранжировку в исполнении Берлинского Филармонического Оркестра под управлением Герберта фон Караяна.

     Jim Hall's Concierto was arguably the greatest LP in the history of CTI; now that it has been reissued (for a second time as a CD), the improved sound and packaging plus three more new tracks eclipse the earlier CD reissue on CBS Associated. With Chet Baker, Roland Hanna and Paul Desmond, Hall is perfectly complemented. A master of melody who never wastes notes, the centerpiece for this release is Hall's interpretation of one movement from Joaquín Rodrigo's "Guitar Concerto," arranged by Don Sebesky. Count Basie was among the most important bandleaders of the swing era. With the exception of a brief period in the early '50s, he led a big band from 1935 until his death almost 50 years later, and the band continued to perform after he died. Basie's orchestra was characterized by a light, swinging rhythm section that he led from the piano, lively ensemble work, and generous soloing. Basie was not a composer like Duke Ellington or an important soloist like Benny Goodman. His instrument was his band, which was considered the epitome of swing and became broadly influential on jazz.

     Classic Concert Live finds baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan, pianist George Shearing, and vocalist Mel Torme performing together with a big band in 1982 at Carnegie Hall. The trio first performed in 1977, but this marks the only recorded document of the group. Generally the tone is light and swinging as befits the cool jazz background of Mulligan and "Velvet Fog" reputation of Torme. Similarly, Shearing is in fine form with his urbane keyboard style adding dramatic punch throughout the night. Whether performing one of Mulligan's classic compositions such as "Line for Lyons" or a standard like "What Are You Doing for the Rest of Your Life," the trio sounds terrific. ~ Review by Matt Collar, AMG.

     With her previous three albums, Barb Jungr had already proved herself one of Britain's most engrossing cabaret singers and one of the most adroit song interpreters in modern vocal pop, and Waterloo Sunset does nothing to alter or diminish that assessment. The reimagined version of "Waterloo Sunset" is wistful, sure, but also bluesy, impregnable, rounding the corner toward sanguinity.

     Guitarist Bruce Forman's second CD for the small San Francisco-based Kamei label features him with bassist John Clayton, drummer Vince Lateano, and sometimes percussionist John Santos, plus guests. Pianist Mark Levine is on eight of the 11 tracks, tenor great Joe Henderson helps out on four, and steel drummer Andy Narell drops by for two. Although there are three Forman originals and one by Clayton ("Angels Just Are"), the emphasis is on bop-era tunes, including Bud Powell's "Un Poco Loco," "A Night in Tunisia," and a swinging "I Concentrate on You."
