Artist: Susannah McCorkle Album: From Broadway To Bebop Label: Concord Recorded: Apr 20, 1994-Apr 22, 1994 Time: 41:22 Format: mp3 320Kbps Size: 120.06 Mb Susannah McCorkle covers a lot of ground during this 1994 CD on which she is joined by a four-horn octet under the musical direction of pianist Allen Farnham. Whether it be "Guys And Dolls," "My Buddy," "Moody's Mood," Don Sebesky's recent "I Remember Bill" (for Bill Evans) or even "Don't Fence Me In," McCorkle brings an intelligent joy to the lyrics. "Chica Chica Boom Chic" (a tribute to Carmen Miranda) is a bit silly but otherwise this is an excellent set featuring one of the top jazz-influenced interpreter of lyrics to be on the scene in the 1990's. Artist: Gordon Goodwin Album: The Phat Pack Genre: Swing, fuzion, modern jazz Label: Imergent Year: 2006 Quality: MP3/CBR320 & FLAC Size: 81,0 + 63,6 mb (MP3) Size: 497 MB (Flac & cue) Total time - 68:00 (MP3) - 75:03 (Flac & cue) REPOST with new links from Mr. rfccbh (FLAC; additional tracks - 11,13) Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band proves that large jazz ensembles are still in demand with this mostly rewarding effort. Goodwin, who wrote most of the music and doubles on piano and tenor sax, makes the most of his group's abilities. Highlights include the modern swing chart "Count Bubba's Revenge," the playful "Hunting Wabbits (A Bad Hare Day)" featuring Sal Lanzo on piccolo, and "Ever Braver, Ever Stronger (An American Elegy)," which is a richly textured work suggesting the influence of 20th century composer Aaron Copland. There are also various guests: vocalist Dianne Reeves adds a nice touch to the swinging chart of "Too Close for Comfort," while virtuoso clarinetist Eddie Daniels is featured in Goodwin's demanding "Under the Wire." The vocal group Take 6 add their tight harmonies to a breezy arrangement of "It Was a Very Good Year." The only dud is the ridiculously out-of-place 1970s R&B hit "Play That Funky Music" (by the one-hit-wonder band Wild Cherry), a piece of tripe featuring shrill smooth jazz alto saxophonist David Sanborn, who is also an ill fit with this normally swinging big band. Goodwin does his best to make something of this monotonous piece, but he is done in by its lack of substance; it's hard to believe that he chose either the song or Sanborn for this otherwise outstanding CD. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |

Artist: Buddy Rich & His Big Band Album: Ease on Down the Road Year: rec. Oct 1973-Jun 1974 Label: LRC Time: 63:57 Format: flac Size: 400 mb This single CD by the Buddy Rich big band has seven of the eight selections from The Roar of '74 and five of the eight numbers from a slightly later Groove Merchant CD. The earlier set features tenor saxophonist Pat LaBarbera among the soloists while the later band (which has completely different personnel) includes Steve Marcus (soprano and tenor) and tenorman Bob Mintzer among the key players. Highlights include Don Menza's "Time Check," "Nuttville," "Senator Sam," "Three Day Sucker," and a medley from "Tommy." The reissue itself is barebones but the music is often quite intriguing, making this a decent budget release. by Scott Yanow |

Claire Martin - Too Darn Hot (2004) |

 |
Artist: Claire Martin Album: Too Darn Hot Year Of Release: 2004 Label: Linn Records Genre: Vocal Jazz Bitrate: 320kbps Total Size: 128 MB Can anyone doubt that we're blessed with a lot of talented, good-looking girls singing jazz right now? Well, here's another, Claire Martin, from across the pond. Martin has been called the first lady of British jazz; "Too Darn Hot," the album at hand, was acclaimed an instant classic at its release by such varied publications as "Jazz Times," one of America's leading jazz magazines. It's not too surprising that we should appreciate Martin on this side of the pond: she gives her musical influences as Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, and Betty Carter. This album is her ninth in ten years, released on Linn, the prestigious Scottish jazz label. It's cleverly crafted, a well-balanced blend of standards, showtunes, and new lesser-known ones. Martin opens with a jazzy, uptempo version of Leonard Bernstein's famous modern ,"Something's Coming," full of anticipation. We've also heard "Love at Last," "The Gentleman is a Dope," by Rogers and Hammerstein, and "These Foolish Things" before, but Martin has come up with fresh arrangements. She makes "It's Raining in My Heart" a thing of beauty. The title song, Cole Porter's "Too Darn Hot," well, she's got a new tack on that one, too. " Black Coffee," one of Peggy Lee's signature tunes; "When I Fall In Love," Joni Mitchell's "Blue Motel Room;" piping hot and fresh. "Love At Last" finds her in a Latin mood. "Noir" is musically quite difficult, but Martin takes it at speed, no sweat. Sir Richard Rodney Bennett appears in brief piano cameos, and joins her in a couple of vocals. |

Sonny Stitt - Tune-Up! (1972) |

Artist: Sonny Stitt Album: Tune-Up! Label: Muse Records Year: 1972 Genre: Jazz Format/Rate: MP3/320 Size: 88MB Rating: Sonny Stitt recorded over 100 albums as a leader and several dozen in a quartet setting in his productive career, but this one ranks at the top. The bebop tenor and alto stylist is very inspired by the top-notch rhythm section (pianist Barry Harris, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Alan Dawson) and has rarely sounded more heated than on "Tune Up," "Idaho," "Just Friends," and "Groovin' High." However, it is his nine-minute jam on "I Got Rhythm" (which finds Stitt taking blazing solos on both tenor and alto) that is the high point of this essential set. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Artist: Sonny Stitt Album: Constellation Label: Cobblestone (Muse) Year: 1972, release: 1992 Format/Rate:MP3/320 Size:90 MB Along with the previous Tune Up, this set (which has been reissued by Muse) is one of Sonny Stitt's greatest recordings. The bop master is stunning on most of the eight selections, particularly "Constellation," "Webb City," and "It's Magic," switching between alto and tenor and sounding quite creative. The rhythm section (pianist Barry Harris, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Roy Brooks) is outstanding and, whether it be the ballad "Ghost of a Chance," Tadd Dameron's "Casbah," or "Topsy," this set has more than its share of great moments. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |

Artist - Barney Kessel Album - Music to Listen to Barney Kessel By Label - Contemporary/OJC Year - 1956, release - 1992 Quality - MP3@320 kbps Size - 92,2 mb Total time - 41:43 AMG rating Barney Kessel celebrated his domination of the 1956 magazine polls with one of the most challenging and unprecedented albums of his career, a twelve-tune recital where his guitar is surrounded by five woodwinds and a rhythm section playing his own crystalline scores. While the main focus is on the leader, such talented associates as Buddy Collette, André Previn, Jimmy Rowles, Red Mitchell, and Shelly Manne are also on hand to lend support. Among the many fine tune choices, two beautiful David Raksin compositions are given special treatment, as Kessel plays "Love Is for the Very Young" ("The Bad and the Beautiful") accompanied by the woodwinds only, and "Laura" as a duet with bassist Mitchell. Featured is Kessel's guitar with five woodwinds and a rhythm section. 12 songs were recorded with Buddy Collette (fl), Andre Previn (p), Shelly Manne (d), Jimmy Rowles (p), Red Mitchell (b), Buddy Clark (b), and others. ~ All Music Guide |

Artist: Kevin Mahogany Album: Big Band Label: Lightyear Entertainment Year: 2005 Bitrate: Lossless Format: FLAC+CUE+LOG+Front Image Size: 350 MB Time: 51.35 Big Band isn't as risk-taking as some of Mahogany's other albums; most of the standards that he embraces on this project are warhorses that have been recorded countless times over the years. Big Band won't go down in history as Mahogany's most adventurous or unconventional album, but even so, it's a solid, worthwhile effort from the expressive jazz singer. |

Artist: Tom Scott Album - Cannon Re-Loaded: An All-Star Celebration of Cannonball Adderley Label - Concord Records Year 2008 Quality - MP3@320kb/s Size 109 mb Total time - 52:34 Cannon Re-Loaded is simply that: a collection of tunes closely associated with Cannonball Adderley interpreted by an all-star collection of players on the current scene, with bandleader Tom Scott (who co-produced with Gregg Field) on alto saxophone (an instrument he doesn't play that often anymore), trumpeter Terence Blanchard, pianist George Duke (who was actually a member of the Adderley quintet and who also plays Rhodes and Wurlitzer), drummer Steve Gadd, bassists Marcus Miller and Dave Carpenter, and Larry Goldings on the Hammond B-3. Vocalist Nancy Wilson also guests on a pair of cuts that reprise her performances with Adderley from the Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley set released in 1962. In his liner notes, Scott claims Adderley as a major influence on his own playing, and that what he and his dream band wanted to convey was not only Adderley's brilliance as a musician, but also his sense of humor, one that welcomed the audience in to the music he made. |

 |
Artist: Kevin Mahogany Album: Another Time Another Place Year: 1997 Label: Warner Bros Records Quality: FLAC+CUE+LOG+Covers Bitrate: Lossless Time: 00:49:03 Size: 321 Mb Review: On his eagerly awaited second album for Warner Bros., Kevin Mahogany shows why he is the most talked-about jazz singer of the '90s. Backed by an all star band featuring virtuoso pianist Cyrus Chestnut, blues steeped guitarist Dave Stryker, and famed tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, Mahogany swings his way through jazz mainstays and rousing blues numbers. He offers sensitive interpretations of classic ballads and sophisticated modern jazz tunes.A feature of almost every tune is Mahogany's unsurpassed scat-singing, which combines energetic, swinging bop phrases, and the bluesiness inherent in almost everything he sings. Each tune is marked by an exceptionally hard-swinging performance by the band. Chestnut's playing is impeccable throughout, and the three tracks which feature Lovano's adventurous tenor work are highlights of the album. Stryker's sensitive guitar playing fleshes out the rhythm section, and his deft, musically mature solos are the perfect addition to this date. |

Avishaï Cohen Trio - Gently Disturbed (2008) |

 |
 |
Artist: Avishaï Cohen Trio Album: Gently Disturbed Label: Sunnyside Year: 2007 Format Mp3, bitrate: 320 kb/s Time: 56:43 Size: 130 Mb AMG Rating: Avishai Cohen has established himself over the past decade as one of the more versatile and curious bassists around. For Gently Disturbed he hooks up with the young pianist Shai Maestro, a fellow Israeli, and drummer Mark Guiliana, on a set that is never less than exciting, always seductive, and often quite challenging. The gently playful opener, "Seattle," is a teaser: a waltz-inspired rhythm percolates underneath, but its simple foundation is often obscured by the trio's complex interplay. As early as track two, the driving "Chutzpan," any notion that this might be a more traditional piano trio recording is quickly dismissed as each of the three musicians engages in virtuosic soloing and lockstep harmonics that find them playing tricks with time and space in a wholly intuitive manner. Cohen's bass work throughout is consistently inventive; he thoroughly enjoys toying with dense, interlocking rhythmic surprises, but he never showboats. In fact, he's a rather generous leader, and had this band been called the Shai Maestro Trio instead, no one would be the wiser because Cohen gives his pianist wide berth to create the directions in which the music flows. Much of the first half of "The Ever Evolving Etude" is taken up with Maestro's unaccompanied solo, and on songs such as the traditional "Puncha Puncha" and the evocative title track, Cohen and Guiliana step back just far enough to allow Maestro to dictate the main melody. Of course, Cohen makes sure to step into the spotlight often enough to reassure that he is in fact the leader here, and on tracks such as Cohen's own neo-classical "Variations in G Minor" and the traditional Israeli song "Lo Baiom Velo Balyla," Cohen's intricate maneuvering reveals once again the ceaseless creativity of his musicianship. by Jeff Tamarkin at All Music Guide |

 |
Artist: Cozy Eggleston Album: Grand Slam Label: Co-egg records Year: 1969 Genre: jazz-rock/ jazz-funk Format, bitrate: mp3, 192 kb/s Total Time: 30:06 Size: 55 MB The Cozy Eggleston Group was organized in 1967 and played MidWest Funk. Chicago tenor legend Cozy Eggleston cut this self-produced album during the late 60s and it's one of the hardest heaviest set of organ/tenor jams we've ever heard! The music is played by a power trio, with Karl Johnson on organ, and Ken Sampson playing amazing scatter-shot lines on the drums. Cozy's also playing with the production of the record a lot during the set so there's some cool echoey parts that come in and out on some cuts. Cozy's horn is loud and soulful, and totally in-the-pocket in a rough live set kind of way! |
