Tommy Johnson - Recorded Works   Artist:Tommy Johnson
   Album: Complete Recorded Works
   Label: Document
   Year: 1928-1929
   Quality: VBR 254kbs
   Size: 99,2mb

Evidence of the strange genius of Mississippi bluesman Tommy Johnson is limited to 17 recordings from two late-1920s sessions. It is the first of these, for the Victor Company, that produced the recordings upon which Johnson's lofty reputation rests. Sung in a husky falsetto, somewhere between an African field holler and an Alpine yodel, "Cool Drink of Water Blues" stands atop a pinnacle in the richly inventive Delta blues tradition with younger cousin Robert Johnson's "Hellhound on My Trail" and Skip James's "Devil Got My Woman." "Canned Heat Blues" is a bittersweet paean to the older Johnson's penchant for imbibing tins of jellied kerosene, and was a modest hit in that era's "race record" market. Also notable from his 1928 session were the influential "Maggie Campbell Blues," "Big Road Blues," and "Big Fat Mama Blues," while the recently discovered Paramount session was remarkable for "Slidin' Delta" and "I Wonder to Myself."

Antoine Roney - The Traveler   Artist: Antoine Roney
   Album: The Traveler
   Label: Muse (Usa)
   Year: 1992
   Format/Bitrate: MP3/320
   Size: 115mb

Wallace Roney's hip brother Antoine is a heck of a tenor player -- blowing in a post-Coltrane mode that makes him one of the better young talents of the Dewey Redman generation of new traditionalists! Although a 90s set, the record's got a deep sort of energy that almost hearkens back to the farther reaches of 70s soul jazz -- almost outside at points, but always returning with a nice sense of soul and spirit -- and often well balanced between opposite poles of expression. Roney plays tenor throughout -- with brother Wallace on trumpet, James Spaulding on alto, flute, and soprano -- and rhythm from Jacky Terrason on piano, Dwayne Burno on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. Titles include "Bean & The Boys", "Weaver Of Dreams", "On Green Dolphin Street", "The Traveler", "Chief Rahab", "Mayan Owl", "Tempus Fugit", and "Estate".

Airmen of Note - Reeds & Rhythm   Artist: Airmen of Note
   Album: Reeds & Rhythm
   Year: 1997
   Format, bitrate: mp3 320kbps
   Time: 51min 38sec
   Size: 108 MB

"Presenting the debut recording of Reeds & Rhythm, a nine-piece ensemble featuring the five saxophone and four rhythm section members of the 18-piece Airmen Of Note. Reeds & Rhythm has evolved over the past few years in a rather unusual way. It began by performing several selections during concerts as a way of giving the brass players a short rest. Due in part to the tremendous response received, we decided to expand the repertoire, and in 1995 performed a feature segment at the annual U.S. Navy Band Saxophone Symposium held at George Mason University. Next, we developed a dedicated saxophone showcase for the Note's Jazz Outreach Program, which offers clinics and workshops to musicians of all ages throughout the nation. As always, the arrangements presented here by Mike Crotty are outstanding. His voicings and treatment of the colors, textures and energy of this saxophone and rhythm section is uniquely Airmen Of Note. It is with great pride that we present our debut recording... Reeds & Rhythm."

Three of the Muse label's top artists of the time teamed up for this album: trumpeter Red Rodney, altoist Richie Cole and tenor saxophonist Ricky Ford. Actually, Ford is only on three of the six selections, but the talented Turk Mauro (doubling on tenor and baritone) fills in well, and the rhythm section (keyboardist Roland Hanna, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Grady Tate) was fully capable of playing anything. The music is mostly post-bop, with recent originals by Cole, Jack Walrath and Rodney alternating with Kenny Dorham's "Dead End," Art Farmer's "Blueport" and the standard "For Heaven's Sake." Excellent straight-ahead performances, with all of the musicians in fine form.

Ana Popovic - Ana!   Artist: Ana Popovic
   Album: Ana!
   Year: 2005
   Format: Dvd-Rip | AVI/XVID,
   Audio: Mp3, 320 kbps
   Size: 1,12

      Description
The DVD was recorded at the Melkweg in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. A home match for Ana Popovic the native of Belgrade lives in Holland since several years. The refrain of her first song Dont Bear Down On Me can be taken straight away as the ... Full Descriptionmotto of the whole evening: "Im Here To Steal The Show." And indeed, thats what she does! 29 year old Ana Popovic proves with her own songs and fresh interpretations that she is an excellent and expressive guitarist with a powerful voice. Anas groovy music is not suitable for blues purists - she stands for modern and cross-border blues with rock, soul and jazz elements.
Only 29 at the time this concert was filmed, Yugoslavian-born singer-songwriter Ana Popovic displays great maturity, guitar skill, and a deep understanding of blues music. While clearly indebted to the classic blues genre, Ana's modern songs also incorporate jazz, soul, and rock flavors. Ana shows off her powerful voice at this concert in Amsterdam with songs including "Don't Bear Down On Me," "Long Way Home," and "Bigtown Playboy," among others.

   Size: 80mb or 123mb or 123mb (RS.com)

Readings by Jack Kerouac on the Beat Generation was the culmination of the author's short-lived recording career, a solo performance that transcends poetry and music — it's literally spoken jazz, the artist improvising freely on the printed text of his own work in front of him. Produced by Bill Randle, it was Kerouac's most musical performance, despite the fact that the recording contained only his voice and no accompaniment, using his voice and language the way a saxophonist might improvise on a particular melodic line or riff. He's spellbinding throughout, intense, focused, and even subtly changing voices with the work itself.

Lonnie Gasperini – Turn Up the Gas     Artist: Lonnie Gasperini
     Album: Turn Up the Gas
     Year: 1997
     Release: 2001
     Label: Key Click Records
     Format: MP3@320 Kb/s
     Time: 51:05
     Size: 125 Mb

Riding on the crest of a revival of interest in the Hammond B3 organ, Rhode Island native Lonnie Gasperini's Turn up the Gas emphasizes the jazz/soul/funk (with a bit of bop thrown in) qualities of the instrument while performing a musical program of standards and originals. Gasperini has performed with a large roster of top jazz performers including Dr. Lonnie Smith who clearly influenced him. Gasperini is joined by a set of performers who are eye to eye with his approach to the music. There's the rough edged baritone sax of Art Hazard, the blues guitar of Broc Dechristopher and percussionist Mark Teixeira all of whom are heard frequently on this album. Appearing on several tracks, Lavern Sims provides entertaining vocals along the way. She ends "Making Whoopie" with some sassy jive a la the inimitable Pearl Bailey. She can also do a credible job with a ballad as she displays on "You've Changed" and scat mightily on "Lullaby of Birdland". The kickoff tune "Lonnie's Blues" sets the stage for the instrumentals, with Gasperini running the table on the organ, Hazard honking away on the bari sax and the blues guitar of Dechristopher all sharing choruses. They truly cook. Gasperini also is no slouch with the composing pen. Sims does a heart felt vocal on his "This Must Be Love" which features an earnest guitar interlude by Dechristopher. The tide turns from funk to hard bop on "Organic Manic" again recalling some of the work of Dr. Lonnie Smith with Hazard playing Smith's Ronnie Cuber.
Gasperini carefully avoids taking advantage of his powerful instrument to dominate the session, which usually turns off the listener in the process. He allows all his cohorts equal time to show their wares, and perhaps more than equal time for Sims. The result is a balanced, full album of soul/jazz inflected performances which is recommended. Hopefully we'll be hearing more from Mr. Gasperini in the not too distant future. Recommended. Visit Gasperini's web page at www.geocities.com/lonniegasperini.

Thelonious Monk - Solo Monk      Artist: Thelonious Monk
      Album: Solo Monk
      Label: Columbia
      Year: 1964
      Format, bitrate: Mp3, 224 kb/s
      Time: 41:05
      Size: 66,4 Mb (cover)
AMG Rating: Thelonious Monk - Solo Monk

The mystery and haunting angular beauty of Thelonious Monk's unadorned keyboard sides are the focus of Solo Monk. As if possessing the history of jazz in his hands, Monk's solo recordings and performances from every phase of his career remain pure. The components of what made Monk such an uncompromising composer, arranger, and especially bandmember are evident in every note he plays. The disc includes both Monk originals as well as several covers of pop music standards. A majority of these sides were cut during a West Coast swing in late-October/early-November 1964. This highly productive jaunt would likewise yield two live releases: Live at the It Club and Live at the Jazz Workshop; both would feature Monk's quartet. On an emotional level, however, these sides arguably surpass many of the band recordings. "Sweet and Lovely" contains several passages that are played with the command and intensity usually demanded of a classical work. The intense yet sophisticated chord progressions that punctuate "Ruby, My Dear" transform what once were simple pop melodies into unaccompanied rhapsodies. Monk transforms the solitude of "Everything Happens to Me" into a minor bop masterpiece replete with his signature disjointed phrasings and variable pacing. The 1992 CD reissue added one bonus track — a Monk original titled "Introspection" — which now closes the collection. Parties interested in a more complete retrospective of Thelonious Monk's '60s solo recordings should also check out Monk Alone: The Complete Columbia Solo Piano Recordings 1962-1968.

     Release: 2002
     Format, bitrate: Mp3, 256 kb/s
     Time: 1:05:39
     Size: 125 Mb

The Thelonious Monk Quartet of 1964 (comprised of the pianist-composer, tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse, bassist Larry Gales, and drummer Ben Riley) is well featured on this excellent set which is augmented by two "new" alternate takes ("April in Paris" and "Pannonica") plus a medley of "Just You, Just Me" and "Liza" that was out previously on a sampler. The unique Monk takes "I Love You Sweetheart of All My Dreams" as a piano solo and otherwise jams tunes with his quartet. Surprisingly only two of the songs ("Pannonica" and "Teo") are his originals, but he reinvents the obscure "Children's Song," "Just You, Just Me," and "April in Paris" so they sound like he wrote them! Easily recommended to Monk fans, this set is just further proof that he never made an unworthy recording.

      Year: 1989
      Format, bitrate: Mp3, 320 kb/s
      Time: 55:00

AMG Rating: Thelonious Monk - Standards

While discs on either Blue Note or OJC offer more preferable introductory material, this collection of jazz standards culled from Monk's '60s stay at Columbia still showcases the pianist in a fine light. One catch, though: Monk was one of the all-time great jazz composers and this disc includes not one of his masterpieces. But, then again, Monk also was one of the most original interpreters of the jazz cannon, and that's made clear here on such highlights as "Tea for Two" and "Liza"; plus, one gets the chance to savor both the solo genius of the man and one of his best backing bands (tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse, bassist John Ore, and drummer Ben Riley). Not essential certainly, but a very enjoyable listen all the same.

Thelonious Monk - The Essential Thelonious Monk (2003)      Artist: Thelonious Monk
Album: The Essential Thelonious Monk (compilation)
      Label: Columbia
      Year: 2003
      Format, bitrate: Mp3, 192 kb/s
      Time: 1:13:53
      Size: 101 Mb
AMG Rating: Thelonious Monk - The Essential Thelonious Monk (2003)

Calling an album "The Essential Thelonious Monk" is a bit misleading, especially since all the material comes from one label: Columbia. Nonetheless, this may arguably be the essential Thelonious Monk material on the label. There are 11 selections here, all recorded between 1962-1968, the period of Monk's tenure with the label. Produced for reissues by the estimable Didier C. Deutsch, Monk's essentials include recordings from all of his settings with the label: solo (the album opens with the stunning rendition of "'Round Midnight" from the Monk Alone album), followed by a live quartet outing of "Bemsha Swing" and a "Blue Monk" from the 1963 Newport Jazz Festival featuring Pee Wee Russell on clarinet. Also included are the various rhythm sections Monk employed, beginning with Charlie Rouse. There's "Rhythm-A-Ning" with John Ore and Frankie Dunlop, "Blue Monk" with Butch Warren and Dunlop, and Larry Gales and Ben Riley on "Misterioso," "Epistrophy," "Straight No Chaser," and "Well You Needn't." Monk's big band is also represented here on "Brilliant Corners," whose members included Conte Candoli, Bob Brookmeyer, Ernie Watts, and Michael Wimberly. In all, the collection is solid in that it features top-notch, unique readings of many of Monk's classic tunes. And, as some have argued, Monk's Columbia period has been underestimated and overlooked; if this is true, these may indeed be the "essential" performances. It hardly matters, though; all of this material — originally produced by Teo Macero — is for beginners, a great place to start a Monk collection with its brilliant selection and stellar sound.

      Year: 1947 - 1952
      Release 2005
      Format bitrate: Mp3, 256 kb/s vbr
      Time: 40:09
      Size: 56,6 Mb

This succinct collection brings together a Monk's dozen from Thelonious Monk's nearly five-year stay (1947-1952) with Blue Note Records, including early recordings of such Monk standards as "Ruby My Dear," "Well, You Needn't," and "In Walked Bud," as well as his twin signature pieces, "'Round Midnight" and "Straight, No Chaser." Also here are three compositions full of that skittering, angular zigzag logic for which Monk is the only template: "Misterioso," "Epistrophy," and "Criss Cross," each of which seems as simple as a bamboo box, until, that is, you try to take it apart to see how it works. Monk left Blue Note to record with Prestige, Riverside, and eventually Columbia, and he returned to the compositions represented here many, many times, but the essential blueprint stayed unchanged: brilliant, circular constructions crafted with the same sort of complex, internal logic that makes the Rubik's cube so fascinating.

AMG Rating: Thelonious Monk - The London Collection, Vol 3

The third of three Black Lion CDs taken from Thelonious Monk's final recording session as a leader features the unique pianist/composer on six solo performances (including the ten-minute "Chordially," which documents him warming up) and five trio numbers with bassist Al McKibbon and drummer Art Blakey. A special bonus of this CD is that three alternate takes ("Nutty," "Crepuscule with Nellie" and "Evidence") were previously unissued, even on Mosaic's "complete" Thelonious Monk Black Lion and Vogue LP box set. Although virtually at the end of his career, Monk sounds quite content throughout this date and is in top form. All three CDs are also available in a compact Black Lion box set, and they serve as a strong close to the career of the remarkable Thelonious Monk.

The first of three Black Lion CDs in this valuable series features music from the last significant Thelonious Monk recording session. There are ten solo performances on the spirited and generally joyful program with Monk sounding at his best on five of his originals (including the striding "Blue Sphere") plus typically unique versions of "Darn That Dream," "Meet Me Tonight in Dreammland," "Nice Work If You Can Get It," "My Melancholy Baby" and "Lover Man." Although virtually at the end of his career and playing in a style unchanged from 25 years earlier, Thelonious Monk is in prime form and seems quite enthusiastic during these memorable performances. All three volumes (which have also been reissued by Black Lion in a compact box) are easily recommended.

Pianist-composer Thelonious Monk's final recording session as a leader (cut in London during a Giants of Jazz tour) resulted in enough material to fill up three CDs. The second volume features Monk with bassist Al McKibbon and drummer Art Blakey on eight trio renditions of Monk's tunes. Although all of the material had been recorded and performed by Monk many times before, these versions sound quite fresh. Highlights include "Evidence," the complex "Criss Cross," "Nutty" and "Hackensack." All of the CDs in this series are well worth picking up for Monk proves to be in prime form during this final effort.

As a sort-of follow-up to Jazz Goes To College (which was actually recorded three years earlier) and the final album in his "college" series, pianist Dave Brubeck and his Quartet (with altoist Paul Desmond, bassist Norman Bates and drummer Joe Morello) recorded at Fullerton Junior College in 1957. The musicians were clearly inspired by the enthusiastic audience and they perform the definitive version of Brubeck's "One Moment Worth Years," dig into the lengthy "Bru's Blues" and play fresh versions of three standards that were in their repertoire throughout the 1950's: "These Foolish Things," "St. Louis Blues" and "The Masquerade Is Over." Most Dave Brubeck records are well worth acquiring, particularly concert albums, so it seems odd that this frequently superb outing has not yet been reissued in full on CD. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

The recordings gathered in this package have been issued in a multitude of ways and are available in a number of configurations. The audiophile jazz label Mosaic Records issued The Complete Vogue Recordings/The Black Lion Sessions on vinyl initially, later releasing the title as a slightly expanded three-CD package. Chronologically, the earlier of the two sets consists of the Vogue recordings from June 7, 1954. The Black Lion sides are divided between a second batch of solo works as well as a trio session — featuring Al McKibbon (bass) and Art Blakey (drums) — both of which were cut on November 11, 1971. The nine sides cut for the Parisian Vogue label are supposedly Monk's very first solo studio recordings. Each of these pieces aptly capture the angular frolic that defines a Thelonious Monk performance. "Reflections" alternately bops with off-kilter rhythms and genuflects to Monk's recurring fascination with the stride piano styling of James P. Johnson and Willie "The Lion" Smith. Of all the solo sides that Monk cut during the nearly 30 years he was actively recording, these stand among the zenith of his achievements. "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" — the one cover tune done at this session — is likewise given a unique and exceedingly Monk reading. Although he would continue to make the occasional public appearance, the 1971 sets found here are Monk's last known studio recordings. Both the solo and trio sides — three volumes worth — were cut during a mammoth session held the day after the final "Giants of Jazz" performance in London. This low-key affair truly highlights the brilliance of Monk within a group dynamic. "Criss Cross," "I Mean You," and two extended takes of "Hackensack" make this set required listening regardless of the historical implications.

Bernard Allison is the guitar-playing, singing and songwriting son of the late, legendary blues guitarist Luther Allison. True to form for this chip off the old block, the young Allison injects every bit as much energy into his live shows as his late father did.
Bernard counts among his influences icons like Albert King, Muddy Waters and Freddie King, and later, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Johnny Winter.

Allison began accompanying his famous father to blues festivals in the early 1970s. There, he was introduced to a who's-who of Chicago blues stars: Muddy Waters, Hound Dog Taylor and Albert King, among others. When he was seven or eight, he began having aspirations of becoming a guitar slinger like his father. Allison's father was more than just a casual record collector, and so Bernard benefited from his father and brothers' collections of classic blues and gospel.
