Artist - Adrian Rollini Album - Adrian Rollini 1934 - 1938 Label - Retrieval / Jazz Nostalgia Years - 1934-1938, release - 2004 Quality - MP3@320 kbps Size - 134mb Total time - 70:52 AMG Rating: Èíñòðóìåíò, íà êîòîðîì èãðàåò èñïîëíèòåëü, áàñ-ñàêñîôîí, âñåãäà áûë äîñòàòî÷íî ðåäêèì, à â íàøè âðåìåíà - ýòî ïðîñòî ýêçîòèêà... REPOST with a new link Adrian Rollini was one of the great jazz musicians of the 1920s. Although he could play several instruments, he gained fame for being the king of the bass saxophone. His playing, which influenced baritonist Harry Carney and to a lesser extent tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins, was virtuosic. Although he sometimes functioned as a tuba or string bass in the ensembles, Rollini's solos were heated and full of creative ideas and wit. However by the early '30s, the bass sax was on its way to near-extinction. Rollini began doubling on the vibraphone, where his only real competitor was Lionel Hampton (who did not really get going on records until 1936), and he ran a club, Adrian's Tap Room. Although not gaining much attention during the 1930s, Rollini stayed active and recorded occasionally until he disappeared in 1940. He later turned up in Florida, running a fishing camp and just playing music now and then up until his mysterious death in 1956. 1937-1938 has five record dates led by Rollini, his last recordings other than a dozen trio sides from 1938-1939 that feature his vibes-guitar-bass group. The music, which includes a few commercial dance band ballad numbers, also has its moments of hot jazz. Rollini teams up with the exciting trumpeter Jonah Jones and the fine clarinetist Sid Stoneburn on four septet numbers that were unissued at the time. While Red McKenzie's two vocals are just okay (and this version of "I Cried for You" is a disappointment), "Bugle Call Rag" and "Old Fashioned Love" receive fine treatments. The same key players (other than McKenzie) are part of a larger group heard on five numbers, including two versions of "Slap That Bass." An intriguing octet on which Rollini is joined by trumpeter Johnny McGhee (who hints at Bix Beiderbecke in spots), clarinetist Paul Ricci, violinist Al Duffy, and drummer Buddy Rich (at the beginning of his jazz career) romp on "Bill" and accompany singer Pat Hoke on two songs, including "Singin' the Blues." While Rollini is mostly heard on bass sax during those selections, the numbers are his final appearances on the giant horn. The last two sessions have Rollini on vibes and xylophone, where he had less personality but was a fluent player. A quintet with cornetist Bobby Hackett and Buddy Rich is joined by singer Sonny Schuyler for five songs (including a version of "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen" cut just a few months after the Andrews Sisters' hit record) and finally for four numbers performed by a vocal group called the Tune Twisters (plus two alternate takes). Hackett keeps the music interesting. Although not essential, this valuable CD contains rare sessions and reminds one of the significance of the great Adrian Rollini, even late in his career. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Artist: Patrick Bruel Album: Entre Deux (2cd) Label: BMG International Year: 2002 Format, bitrate: Mp3, 320 kb/s Time: 1:19:46 Size: 178 Mb (full covers lyrics) 155 Mb (original versions) A SPECIAL GIFT FROM BUBU TO ALL CLUB MEMBERS! This double disc is a real gift to all lovers of the French chanson. Popular singer and film actor Patrick Bruel selected and performed 20 odd classic songs from the period between the two World Wars — hence the title of the album, Entre Deux (Between Two). Bruel and his arrangers managed to be both respectful to their source material and to come up with a new interpretation of it. Some numbers were sung in duet with such French luminaries as Charles Aznavour, Laurent Voulzy, Johnny Hallyday, Jean-Jacques Goldman, and Alain Souchon. The album opens with "Mon Amant de Saint-Jean," reportedly the singer's personal favorite, followed by "Ménilmontant," a touching duet with Charles Aznavour, himself a living legend of the French chanson. "Ou Sont Mes Amants?," where Bruel is accompanied by film actresses Emmanuelle Béart and Sandrine Kiberlain, also works surprisingly well. The deliciously melancholic "Je Suis Dans la Dèche" (I'm Broke), performed solo by Bruel, captures so well the essence of the French musical tradition. The album's other highlight is "À Paris, Dans Chaque Faubourg," sung in duet with 84-year-old Danielle Darrieux, a movie star of that period. The collection closes with "À Contretemps," the only new song written for the album by M.F. Gros, David Moreau, and Bruel himself, that serves as the perfect homage to the spirit of the chanson, that peculiarly French musical genre. ~ Yuri German, AMG |

The Don Ellis Orchestra - Live In 3 2/3/4 Time |

Artist: Don Ellis Album: Live In 3 2/3/4 Time Label: Pacific Jazz Year: 1966/67 Release: 2000 Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 Kbps Time: 75:09 Size: 149 MB AMG Rating: The Don Ellis Orchestra really came into its own during the period covered by this CD (1966-1967), playing perfectly coherent solos in ridiculous time signatures. At the time, the band consisted of five trumpets, three trombones, five reeds, piano, three basses, two drummers, and three percussionists. "Barnum's Revenge" has the ensemble playing a satirical brand of Dixieland in 5/4, "Orientation" goes back and forth between 7/8 and 9/8, and "Upstart" is in 11/8 (three and two-thirds beats to the measure!). Somehow everything swings with Ellis, Ira Schulman (on tenor and clarinet), Dave Mackay (on piano), and Tom Scott (on saxello) being the main soloists. In addition to the original six selections (recorded at the Pacific Jazz Festival in 1966 and at Shelly's Manne-Hole in 1967), there are five additional cuts, including an alternate version of "Freedom Jazz Dance." Fun music. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |

Artist: Klaus Doldinger Album: In New York/Street of Dreams Label: Bluemoon Format: FLAC (cue+log) & mp3 (320k/s) Size: 382 & 150 MB (full covers) Time: 64:31 AMG Rating: Klaus Doldinger is best known as the saxophonist and leader of Passport, one of Europe's leading fusion groups of the 1970s, 80s and 90s. This particular CD is a complete change of pace since it gives listeners a rare opportunity to hear Doldinger in New York playing straight ahead jazz. His tenor playing sometimes recalls Stanley Turrentine a bit while his soprano sounds more original and is quite fluent. For the special project, Doldinger teams up with some of New York's best: pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Charnett Moffett, drummer Victor Lewis and, on a few numbers, vibraphonist Roy Ayers and percussionist Don Alias. The group plays five of the saxophonist's originals (best is "Coco-Motion") and seven standards including "I Got It Bad," "Skylark," "Well You Needn't," and "Speak Low." This is an excellent if obscure effort that is worth searching for. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |

Freddie Roach - Brown Sugar |

 |
Artist: Freddie Roach Album: Brown Sugar Label: Blue Note Year: 1964 Format, bitrate: MP3@320 Time: 36:85 Size: 81.4MB AMG Rating: Brown Sugar marks a turning point for Freddie Roach: It's the moment he decided to get dirty, funky, and soulful. Previously, he had plenty of funk in his playing, but he was tasteful, at times a little bit too tasteful. On Brown Sugar, he simply burns. The album is devoted to blues, R&B, and soul, with the title track (the lone original on the album) functioning as a rallying cry of sorts. Roach is hotter than ever, but he never overplays or overloads the organ; whether it's slow blues or smoking R&B, he gets deep into the groove and works it hard, without neglecting to contribute compelling solos. And if you're looking for compelling solos, tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson proves that he is as exceptional with R&B and soul-jazz as he is with hard bop. Clarence Johnston, Roach's longtime drummer, provides stable support and guitarist Eddie Wright has his moments as well, helping make Brown Sugar the standout item in Roach's catalog. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMG |

This LP finds Corea teaming up with fellow pianist Friedrich Gulda for lengthy improvisations that mix together jazz (including "Someday My Prince Will Come") and classical themes. There are some surprising moments during these long performances, with Corea and Gulda inspiring each other to come up with creative ideas. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |

Artists: Warne Marsh & Kenny Drew Album: In Copenhagen Release: 2007 Label: Storyville Fomat/Bitrate: MP3/320 kbit/s Size: 138 MB AMG Rating: REPOST with a new link Warne Marsh was one of the most pure, imaginative and creative improvisers jazz has ever known. This CD comprises tracks he recorded in Copenhagen on April 21 1980 with the Kenny Drew Trio for a Danish radio broadcast and is the first authorised release of this music. Marsh, the seasoned veteran of a thousand jam sessions, never had the least difficulty in coming to terms with a new challenge and the four musicians functioned together like a regular unit. Pianist Kenny Drew was an established member of the Danish community and had taken up residence in Copenhagen in 1962. Drummer Aage Tanggaard has frequently worked with pianist Duke Jordan and Bo Stief is one of Denmark’s best known bass players whose credits include working with Lockjaw Davis and Ben Webster – he is probably the only musician to have recorded with both Wild Bill Davison and Miles Davis.
