Charlie Barnet - Mister Barnet's Conference |

 |
Artist: Charlie Barnet Album: Mister Barnet's Conference Label: Ocium Year: 1946 - 1952 Release: 2002 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Time: 66:29 Size: 140MB REPOST with a new link A bandleader from age 16 until his death 62 years later, Charlie Barnet was at his peak in the late '30s and early '40s. Of his many recordings, Barnet is best remembered for his smash hit single "Cherokee;" his arrangement, in fact, has been followed note by note by virtually every band and orchestra since. Among the first white bandleaders to hire blacks (one of his discoveries was Lena Horne), he was refreshingly casual about it, refusing in later years to posture as a Civil Rights pioneer. Compared to other bandleaders of his stature, Charlie Barnet's film appearances were sparse, consisting of a mere four feature films: Music in Manhattan (1944), Jam Session (1944), Idea Girl (1946), and A Song Is Born (1948). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide |

John Mayall - Life In The Jungle |

Artist: John Mayall Album: Life In The Jungle Label: Charly UK Year: 1992 Format, bitrate: Mp3, 320 kb/s Time: 42:35 Size: 61,4 Mb (full covers) Released in 1993, Life in the Jungle (Vol. 4 in the Charly Blues Masterworks series) features British blues man John Mayall who was working on his third decade as torchbearer of the modern blues tradition when he recorded around 20 titles during the years 1987 and 1988. Eight of these comprise Life in the Jungle; eighteen were released in 1997 as The Power of the Blues (Charly 212), and some of them reappeared (in scrambled sequence with a couple of alternate takes) in 1999 on Blues Power (Recall 233). Mayall's band included guitarists Coco Montoya and Walter Trout, bassist Bob Haynes, keyboardist Tony Carey, and drummer Joe Yuele. This album is a worthwhile extension of the excellent music that John Mayall's Blues Breakers turned out during the 1960s and early '70s. Noteworthy titles include "Ridin' on the L&N" (composed by Lionel Hampton and pianist Dan Burley) and "Life in the Jungle," an urban lament for modern times. Of the three albums mentioned here, it would probably be wisest to invest in Mayall's The Power of the Blues as it contains a delicious, nearly 11-minute version of his classic paean to promiscuity, "Room to Move." arwulf arwulf, AMG |

John Mayall - Cross Country Blues |

Artist: John Mayall Album: Cross Country Blues Label: One Way Records Year: 1981 - 1984 Release: 1994 Format, bitrate: Mp3, 320 kb/s Time: 1:01:58 Size: 152 Mb (full covers) This album will be the one to fill in the missing gap in my Eighties recording career and picks up the story where The 1982 Reunion Concert CD leaves us. Due to John McVie having ongoing Fleetwood Mac commitments and with Mick Taylor living in England, it seemed obvious that a new edition of the Bluesbreakers should be formed in order to continue the flow of creativity. My good friend producer Don Nix was the first to come up with the suggestion that I fly out to Memphis and get together with some of his local blues musicians. It was there that I met and went into the studio with guitarist DonMcMinn (who'd previously worked regularly with Memphis Slim), blues rock guitarist Bobby Manuel, bass guitarist Jeff Davis, drummer Mike Gardner and piano wizard Larry Raspberry. The session completed and mixed down, we shopped it around the USA unsuccessfully and eventually a few of the tracks subsequently found a limited outlet on a small Australian label. Returning to my home in Los Angeles I decided to form yet another incarnation of the Bluesbreakers and so in 1984 I began an ongoing association with guitarist Coco Montoya, who had left a strong impression on me the night I heard him per forming at The Central club. I next called upon Kal David to ask him to be the other lead guitar player. (We'd met a while ago when playing a television special with Bonnie Raitt.) He accepted. Saxophonist great Red Holloway recommended bass guitarist Bobby Haynes and the drummer I chose was Willie McNeil who was a friend of my son Jason. Now we were complete and on the road until time permitted us to go into the studio for yet another speculative album and one that, until now, has never seen the light of day. After all these years I must say how thrilled I am to share these lost sessions with you and hope you will derive the same excitement from them as I do as you listen and enjoy. - John Mayall, January 1994 |

Carrington & Rogers & Haslip & Osby - Structure |
Music » Jazz » Modern Jazz |
 |
 |
Artist: Terri Lyne Carrington, Adam Rogers, Jimmy Haslip, Greg Osby Album: Structure Label: ACT Music / Kontor Year: 2004 Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 kbps Size: 137MB The combination of Greg Osby with Terri Lyne Carrington is quite logical. Altoist Osby, an original innovator with the M-Base movement (which explored free-form funk) has a very original improvising style. Since Carrington has always loved funk, as has electric bassist Jimmy Haslip (of the Yellowjackets), this match-up works quite well. Osby's interplay with guitarist Adam Rogers is also a major plus. Other than a Joni Mitchell piece ("Ethiopia") that the drummer sings, the repertoire is comprised of group originals. Whether it be overt funky pieces, brooding ballads or the well-titled "Fire," the music is explorative, unpredictable and usually grooving. Well worth exploring by fans of creative funk/jazz. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |

John Mayall - The 1982 Reunion Concert |

Artist: John Mayall Album: The 1982 Reunion Concert Label: Repertoire/One Way Year: 1982 Release: 1994 Format, bitrate: Mp3, 320 kb/s Time: 55:51 Size: 130 Mb (covers) Excluding one cover "My Time After Awhile" the other nine tracks on the CD are penned from Mayall. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. As long as the compositions allow Mayall to sing the blues and allow room for Mick Taylor to show why his solos and fill-ins are legendary the audience will go away satisfied. McVie and Allen provide a terrific combination and because their egos are in check you can concentrate on Taylor's proficiency. It isn't only the skill with the guitar that allows Taylor to shine. It's the entire package from the sound of the instrument to the amps matching the style of music emanating from the stage. There were many that weren't impressed with the recording. While it is impossible to turn the clock back to the original days of the Bluesbreakers when they once had a young Mr. Clapton and then an even younger Mr. Taylor, an impartial listening to the CD will sell you on the timeless music Mayall created and why each generation must here a representation. The fidelity is very good throughout the release excluding the final song "Have You Heard" when it sounds as if the master recording was an audience tape. Enjoy the music and be well.
