 |
Artist: Modern Jazz Quartet Album: Music From "Odds Against Tomorrow" Label: Blue Note Year: 1959 Release: 1990 Format, bitrate: MP3, 224 kbps Time: 32:12 Size: 59.4 MB AMG Rating: The Modern Jazz Quartet never actually recorded for Blue Note but their United Artists date was reissued on this Blue Note CD. The MJQ (vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianist John Lewis, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Connie Kay) perform six of Lewis's compositions which were used in the film Odds Against Tomorrow. Best known is "Skating in Central Park" but all of the selections have their memorable moments and it is good to hear this classic unit playing such fresh material. ~Scott Yanow, AMG |

Artist - Jim Galloway Album - Echoes Of Swing Label - Cornerstone Year - 2003 Quality - MP3@320 kbps Size - 128 mb Total time - 68:10 AMG rating Ïðåäëàãàþ ïîçíàêîìèòüñÿ ñ áëåñòÿùèì êàíàäñêèì ìóçûêàíòîì, èñïîëíÿþùèì äæàçîâóþ êëàññèêó! Although sometimes heard in Dixieland settings, soprano-saxophonist Jim Galloway is a swing stylist at heart. Together with his sextet, Echoes of Swing is an excellent outlet for his playing. The group plays enthusiastic versions of ten warhorses, some of which are taken by Galloway with just the rhythm section. The leader has a couple rare but effective appearances on baritone sax and even takes a vocal. The playing by the group is pretty spontaneous and, although not completely flawless (there are a couple minor errors), the relaxed music is infectious and fun to experience. Highlights include "Jeepers Creepers," "Christopher Columbus" and a multi-tempo exploration of "Runnin' Wild." ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |

Artist: Barney Wilen Quintet Album: Passione Label: Venus records Year: 1995 Release: 2007 Format: WAV Size: +- 400 Mb. A great little set from Barney Wilen's late revival period strong, solid blowing all the way through with a depth that almost matches his classics from the early days! The group here is a quintet -- with Enrico Rava on trumpet in the frontline alongside Wilen's tenor and soprano sax often joining Barney tightly on the head arrangements, in a mode that's strongly soulful, with plenty of classic touches. Many of the tunes are familiar jazz standards, but stretched out nicely with lots of room to roam around - and a few great numbers on the set are of European origin, shorter, but with some wonderful colors and tones that Wilen illuminates with his horn and which the group plays with a slightly Latin flair in the rhythms. Titles include "Jitterbug Waltz", "My Ship", "Estate", "Line For Lyons", "Begonia", "Passione", "Bella Chao", "Al Herraz", and "Besame Mucho". © 1996-2009, Dusty Groove America, Inc. |

John Mayall - The Last Of The British Blues |

Artist: John Mayall Album: The Last Of The British Blues (live) Label: One Way Records Inc Year: 1978 Format, bitrate: Mp3, 320 kb/s Time: 40:21 Size: 79,9 Mb (full covers) This was the last of the six albums John Mayall originally made for Blue Thumb/ABC Records between 1975 and 1978, about which he has said, "ABC released six of my albums as a tax write-off. A week after they were released you couldn't find them in any store." It's a live album on which Mayall fronts a quartet consisting of guitarist James Quill Smith (who sings lead on several songs), bassist Steve Thompson, and drummer Soko Richardson. The approach is rock-oriented, and the set list includes such Bluesbreakers favorites as Mose Allison's "Parchman Farm," and Freddie King's "Hideaway" (taken at a frantic tempo), along with the usual complement of generic Mayall originals, among them, a remake of "The Bear," from Blues From Laurel Canyon. ~William Ruhlmann, AMG |

J.J. Cale - Roll On |

 |
 |
Artist: J.J. Cale Album: Roll On Label: Rounder / Umgd Year: 2009 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kbps Size: 91 mb While songwriter J.J. Cale has established himself as an elusive and even reluctant legend in popular music with his sporadic string of releases over the last 38 years, he's never drastically changed his approach. Cale is a workmanlike songwriter whose roots in blues, Okie folk, and roots rock music have been informing his tales of travel, nocturnal pleasure, and everyday life all the while. Even the acclaimed but spaced out Travel Log (which was Cale's equivalent to Neil Young's Trans) never managed to root his sound that far afield from its wellspring. 2009's Roll On, is more strange, laid-back grooves and road-weary tales of quark strangeness and charm from an inveterate master. Where the erratic but acclaimed Road to Escondido with Eric Clapton reeked of laziness and kitsch, Roll On is steeped deep in slow boogie, slower jump jazz, swampy blues, and minor-key laid-back guitar workouts. Cale not only plays guitar and sings here, but on almost all of these cuts he does double and triple duty on drums, bass, and even Rhodes piano! His guests -- including Dave Teegarden and Jim Keltner on drums on a track each, and Clapton on one number -- only appear on four of these dozen tracks. Check, "Who Knew?," the jazzy shuffle that opens the set. . . . |

David Liebman Quintet – If They Only Knew |

 |
Artist: David Liebman Album: If They Only Knew Label: Timeless Year: 1980 Time: 44:06 Format: FLAC Size: (95.78 x 2)+86MB (with covers) AMG Rating: Originally put out by Timeless, only to be issued in the U.S. on Impulse! eight years after the session, the phrase "if they only knew" at one time was conceived as a riposte to Liebman's critics. But you won't hear any querulous complaints from this corner, for this is a thoughtful, often burning quintet session caroming off the bumpers of post-bop, jazz-rock and the avant-garde. Liebman is mostly heard on brittle, sometimes volatile tenor throughout the record, even turning in some fancy bop licks on "Autumn in New York." The relaxed, darting electric touch comes from John Scofield, whose asymmetrical guitar you can spot a country mile away, and he contributes the most attractive tune on the session, "Capistrano." Trumpeter Terumasa Hino mixes it up pretty well on many of the tracks in his Freddie Hubbard-derived manner; Ron McClure makes his presence known up front at all times on acoustic bass; Adam Nussbaum is just fine on drums, and the whole thing comes to a furious finish that leaves you wanting more. ~ Richard S. Artist: Don Ellis Album: Soaring Label: MPS Year: 1973 Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 Kbps Time: 42:19 Size: 85,2 MB AMG Rating: The last album by Don Ellis' big band before the trumpeter suffered a heart attack that would ultimately cut short both his career and his life, this underrated set finds Ellis' orchestra consisting of seven brass (including tuba), four strong woodwind players, a string quartet, and an enlarged six-piece rhythm section that includes guitarist Jay Graydon and keyboardist Milcho Leviev. A special highlight is "Invincible" which is an outstanding feature for altoist Vince Denham; whatever happened to him? Ellis composed four of the eight originals including one titled "The Devil Made Me Write This Piece!" This out-of-print Lp is well worth searching for. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |

Fletcher Henderson - Blue Rhythm |

Artist: Fletcher Henderson Album: Blue Rhythm (Original Recordings 1931-1933 Featuring Coleman Hawkins) Label: Naxos Year: 1931 - 1933 Release: 2003 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Time: 64:27 Size: 145MB REPOST with a new link Fletcher Henderson was one of the 1930s ‘big band’ pioneers both in musicianship and orchestration. He used only the leading players of the day and together with Don Redman they created a style of arrangement that was adopted by many of their peers. On ‘Blue Rhythm’ are recordings made between 1931 and 1933 – a time when Henderson had one of his most impressive collection of stars in the band. They included Rex Stewart – trumpet, Coleman Hawkins – tenor and clarinet, Russell Procope – alto and clarinet, J.C. Higginbotham – trombone and Edgar Sampson – alto and clarinet who was also an accomplished arranger. The opener ‘Sugar Foot Stomp’ is a re-arranged version of King Oliver’s ‘Dippermouth Blues.’ This up-tempo version features Procope, Hawkins and Benny Morton. The ODJB favourite, ‘Tiger Rag,’ is performed with novel approach as part of the melody is taken at half-tempo. By the time the two 1933 sessions were made Stewart had departed to be succeeded by Henry ‘Red’ Allen and that fine trombonist Dickie Wells had also joined. Also Fletcher’s brother Horace had taken the piano chair – Horace also arranged for the band – but the quality of the music never waned. Evidence of Horace’s arranging talent is heard on the Hawkins number ‘Queer Notions’ which incorporates an harmonically advanced chord structure. Be that as it may Hawkins and Allen contribute ‘laid back’ solos. ‘Blue Rhythm’ is a first class compilation of the music of a highly capable and respected bandleader. For a few years Henderson’s music brought him great prominence but by 1934 he had to break the band up. He then enjoyed more fame as an arranger for the Benny Goodman Orchestra than he had achieved as a leader himself. For a brief period in 1939 he played piano with Goodman. ~ Jack Ashby, www.musicweb-international.com |

John Mayall - Road Show |

Artist: John Mayall Album: Road Show Label: Magnum Music Group/Thunderbolt [U.K.] Year: 1987 Format, bitrate: Mp3, 320 kb/s vbr Time: 38:31 Size: 65,4 Mb (full covers) Road Show is a retitled reissue of John Mayall's 1981 album Road Show Blues, originally released by DJM Records in the U.K. At this time, Mayall's backup band included guitarist/singer James Quill Smith, bassist Kevin McCormick, drummer Soko Richardson, and singer Maggie Parker. Two cuts, Jimmy Reed's "Baby, What You Want Me to Do" and Mayall's "Mexico City," were recorded live. The band is a tight unit in support of the leader, who sings and plays fiercely. By the time that this album, the third and last in Mayall's DJM contract, was recorded, his career was in decline, and the disc was not released in the U.S. at the time. It would be another five years before he made another. Through some corporate legerdemain, the record has bounced around from one company to another and been reissued several times. In addition to this one, there are The Adventures of John Mayall and Lost and Gone. Of course, the Mayall fan needs only one, but it does make a worthy addition to the catalog. ~William Ruhlmann, AMG |

Paula Molerembaum - Berimbaum |

Artist: Paula Molerembaum Album: Berimbaum Label:Universal Latino Year: 2004 Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 kbs Size: 108mb AMG Rating: A veteran of the Brazilian samba scene, Morelenbaum has an impeccable pedigree in the music. But for this album, she's chosen as a common thread songs by the great Vinicius DeMoraes, whether as sole or co-composer. It makes for a great theme, with so much quality work to choose from. What makes this so fascinating are the arrangements used to frame the pieces, like the light Brazilian funk used on "Tomara" and "Berimbau," for example, which both float, lighter than air, over truly imaginative drum programming and instrumental performances. Morelenbaum's glorious voice sets the standard throughout, breathy but gloriously melodic (she also deserves great credit for her production work here). Even brass sounds feather-light, gliding by the songs. And yet it retains a real groove, a toe-tapping funk that's irresistible and does full justice to the songs themselves. Even a bossa ballad like "Insensetaz" is given quirky little touches, like the irresistible cello line by Morelenbaum's husband, Jacques. It's an album of details and quirks in the melodies and rhythms, gentle and lulling, but still constantly pushing forward, and rewarding no matter how many times you listen to it. ~ Chris Nickson, AMG |

Artist: Sidney Bechet Album: BD Jazz Label: Nocturne Year: 1938-1952 Release 2004 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Size: cd1 - 131MB; cd2 - 134MB REPOST with a new link New Orleans jazz legend Sidney Bechet was all the rage in Paris in the late ‘40s and early ‘50s, when he recorded the sides included on disc one of this new two-CD package. After some lean years in the US, when he temporarily dropped out of the music business to run a tailor shop in Harlem, Bechet journeyed to Paris, where his blend of traditional jazz and full-bodied swing made him the toast of the town. He’d live out the rest of his years in France as something of a national icon until his death in 1959. There’s much to appreciate on these French recordings, most notably the sheer beauty and purity of Bechet’s sound on both soprano saxophone and clarinet. Whether playing down and dirty blues, New Orleans stompers or standards like Gershwin’s ”Summertime” or Kurt Weill’s ”September Song,” Bechet shines, soaring above the mostly just-average French bands that backed him. Even better is disc two, drawn from Bechet’s New York recordings a decade earlier. Here, in a variety of small-group settings, he has the benefit of playing with sidemen of his own level, like Rex Stewart, Red Allen, Muggsy Spanier, Charlie Shavers, Willie ”The Lion” Smith, and Earl Hines. Compared to the French sides, the New York disc is grittier and filled with more exciting solos, as Bechet, pushed by more challenging musical environs, ratchets up his game. Along with some fine music, this attractive set is distinguished by its packaging. It’s the latest in a series of releases that pairs historic jazz recordings with specially commissioned comic strips on the musicians’ lives. In this case, an amusing sixteen-page vignette on Bechet’s Harlem years from artist Julie Faulques provides another reason to check out this collection. ~Joel Roberts, All About Jazz |

Artist: Susannah McCorkle Album: Easy To Love: The Songs of Cole Porter Years: 1995 Release: 1996 Label: Concord Records Format, bitrate: MP3/ 128 kbps & 320 kbps Size: 57.5 MB & 131 MbREPOST with an additional MP3@320 link from Mr. Je4a Susannah McCorkle has long been a lyricist's dream. Rather than distort or alter the words she interprets, McCorkle (who has an immediately appealing and likable voice) brings out the hidden beauty in the lyrics. For her latest Concord disc, Susannah McCorkle sings 14 songs written by Cole Porter whose lyrics were among the most sophisticated of the 1930-1960 era. The arrangements by her musical director and pianist Allen Farnham are quite inventive, with exuberant octet numbers (featuring concise but generally memorable solos from trumpeter Randy Sandke, alto Chris Potter, trombonist Robert Trowers, and Ken Peplowski on tenor and clarinet) alternating with more intimate performances including voice-guitar duets with Howard Alden on a slow chorus of "Just One Of Those Things," "Why Don't We Try Staying Home" and the sad "Goodbye Little Dream, Goodbye." Among the other highlights are lengthy renditions of "Anything Goes" and "Let's Do It" which find McCorkle singing every stanza that could be found (the former has many obscure topical references), a boisterous version of "It's All Right With Me" and an emotional "Weren't We Fools?" ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |

Artist: Oscar Peterson Album: A Jazz Odyssey Label: Verve Records Year: 1950 - 1970 Release: 2002 Format, bitrate: Mp3, 256 kb/s Time: 1:08:10 Size: 91,8 Mb AMG Rating: EACH DAY AN O.P. DAY! This 18-track selection of Oscar Peterson's work was assembled to coincide with the great pianist's autobiography. Centering on his most creative period, from 1950-1970, this compilation focuses intently on the years Peterson spent playing with Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz, Billie Holiday, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Roy Eldridge, Sweets Edison, and Max Roach, as well as establishing himself as a bandleader and soloist. Tracks such as "My Romance," "Get Happy," "Blue Moon," and "Pennies from Heaven'' are standards in Peterson's repertoire and showcase his sprightly, often dizzying right-hand machinations and his complex, often frighteningly difficult conception of harmonic architecture. In his fine swinging style, his read of "I Only Have Eyes for You," with Fitzgerald, is one of the true hallmarks of piano and vocal jazz. This is a fine place to start for anyone interested in discovering Peterson's contribution to the historical jazz canon. Thom Jurek, AMG |
