Great Britain's Marian McPartland & George Shearing |

Artist: Marian McPartland & George Shearing Album: Great Britain's Marian McPartland & George Shearing Label: Savoy Jazz Year: 1947, 1952 Release: 1997 Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbps Time: 43:12 Size: 104 Mb Happy Birthday To You mr. BlackB! "Jazz, our greatest art form, has been America's chief export, and England, probably because of the closeness of our languages, has been one of its greatest importers, especially since the inception of "cool jazz " B.C. (before cool), France was considered the closest to the United States jazzwise as they were able to dig le jazz "hot" which seemed to fit their emotions, witch are the complete opposite of the more reserved, almost too cool English. Due to these jazz importations, via records mostly, England has been able to produce several very fine jazz musicians who, in turn, were able to affirm themselves in jazz. The most famous jazz musicians out of England all seemed to choose the piano as their instrument for expression; they are, Leonard Feather, who has since turned critic; Marian McPartland, wife of Jimmy, and mainstay at the Hickory House in New York, and George Shearing." (Ozzie Cadena) In 1952 Savoy released this album and called it "Great Britain's Marian McPartland and George Shearing". To emphasize their common ethnic roots in the title must have validated the pairing on the one disc. Keyboard duos cropped up from time to time, but not two pianists featured individually as in this instance. The fact that the Shearing tracks (1947) were recorded five years earlier than the McPartland ones (1952) adds interest too. Anyway, both Marian's and George's stars were on the rise and Savoy could sense this. |

Artist: Delicatessen Album: My Baby Just Cares For Me Release: 2008 Label: Tratore Music Brasil Format, bitrate: MP3, 128 kbps Size: 56 mb Time: 43:49 min Bossa Ana kruger – Voz Carlos badia - Violгo Nico Bueno – Baixo Mano Gomes – Bateria DELICATESSEN, was a great success at the records’ independent market in 2006 (around 5.000 records sold in 4 months). In that year, in November, the group had his first tour with performances in Porto Alegre (Theatro Sгo Pedro), Buenos Aires (Notorious), Rio de Janeiro (Mistura Fina) and Sгo Paulo (Bourbon Street Music Club), which were very successful and received fine critics. The group was headlined in national and international newspapers such as Folha de Sгo Paulo, Diбrio Catarinense, Zero Hora and La Naciуn (Argentina) and also in some well-known magazines such as Veja, TAM and Exame. Delicatessen participated in TV programs (Jф Soares – Globo) and got very good critics by important and acknowledged Brazilian journalists: Roberto Muggiati and Nelson Motta among others. In november, 2008, the group is launching his second cd. Up to now, they have sold 16.000 copies, with international distribution made by Tratore. In japan, for instance, the group have sold more than 3.000 copies. Delicatessen arose from the experience of three excellent musicians and a female singer with great potential. After that, they made some decisions to finally get the results which are now evident: a non-affected and non-virtuous work, light, fundamentally simple and delicate. According Carlos Badia, ”The refined simplicity we have been looking for from the beginning has resulted in a consistent work.” The researcher Carlos Moura summarizes it in another way: ”In my searches for the depuration of the coolest Jazz era I have found that gauchos musicians and a singer retake the fine tracks of the west coast sound, bathing them with the Brazilian Bossa Nova, universal acclaimed nowadays. It sounds easy, but it is not!” Enthusiastically, the research makes a parallel between the young singer and the great American Jazz divas: ”Ana gets back the sweetness and from that time: She conducts everything with elegance and lightness to the sweet balance of Bossa Nova, the Jazz’s dearest daughter. In their performances, the quartet remakes Jazz standards of names like Duke Ellington, Burke and Webster, George & Ira Gershwin, Ray Noble among others. They play classics such as Angel eyes, In a mellow tone, Black coffee, In a sentimental mood, The very thought of you, Do it again, The touch of your lips and also songs created by Carlos Badia and Beto Callage. The shows have a refined production made by Branco Produзхes Brancoproducoes.com |

Bobby Blue Bland - Years of Tears |

Artist: Bobby Blue Bland Album: Years of Tears Label: Malaco Year: 1993 Format, bitrate: MP3, 256 kb/s Time: 44:01 Size: 80.6 Mb Один из лучших альбомов, на мой взгляд. Perhaps no artist has flourished at Malaco more than Bobby "Blue" Bland. Bland's animated, raw voice, though not as wide-ranging, still has a character and quality unmatched in blues, soul or vintage R&B. This CD is his finest for the label since Members Only. The opening number "Somewhere Between Right & Wrong" has a simmering track, Bland's mournful, explosive leads, tasty organ, tight drumming, and on-the-money lyrics from composers Johnny Barranco and Jackson. It sets the stage for nine additional country-tinged and bluesy soul tunes, including three from Frederick Knight, who also produced his compositions. It's not his Duke material, but it's close enough to satisfy. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide |

Artist: Brooklyn Funk Essentials Album: Watcha Playin' Label: Black Plastic Magick/Comet Records Year: 2008 Format, bitrate: mp3, 192 kbps Time: 75 mins Size: 100 Mb It's been a long time since we last heard from Brooklyn Funk Essentials, but the combo's lost none of their charm -- and instead even sounds a bit better than before, thanks to a whole host of new styles! The group's familiar funky grooves are inflected here with a really wide range of fresh influences -- bits of global funk, 80s soul, and more -- all wrapped together with an indie crispness that really suits the group well. Titles include "Need", "Dance Free Night", "For A Few Dollars More/Faya", "Work It Out", "My Jamaican Girl", "The Day Before Adidi", "Dibby Dibby Sound", and "S-Curved". © 1996-2009, Dusty Groove America, Inc. |

Anatoly Babiy - Sometime In The Past |

Artists: Anatoly Babiy Album: Sometime In The Past / Когда-то В Прошлом Release: 2001 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kbs Time: 1:01:07 Size: 135 Mb Anatoly Babiy is a Russian bass player |

Paul Desmond Quartet & Don Elliott |

Artist: Paul Desmond, Don Elliott Album: Paul Desmond featuring Don Elliott (with bonus track) Label: Fantasy 3235/OJC-119 Year: 1956 Format, bitrate: mp3@320 kbps Time: 42 min Size: 96 MB This post can be seen as a complement to "Paul Desmond Quintet/Quartet": Desmond takes an emphatic step forward as a stylist here, even while giving featured co-billing to his brass sideman Don Elliott. Again, he chooses to omit the piano so as not to compete with his Brubeck recordings (Brubeck and Desmond had an informal agreement to that effect), and his musical imagination here doesn't really require a piano's harmonic support anyway. Desmond sounds much more confident and witty than at any time on his debut LP (1954), knocking out a really great solo on his own "Jazzabelle" for starters, bowing to no outside style ogres. Desmond's other composition "Sacre Blues" is a clever takeoff from the first few notes of Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring," with a walking bass counting off the beat; and the normally self-effacing saxophonist even goes way up high for one of the few times in his solo career. Elliott, who bailed out of jazz later to find success writing music for commercials, is a fine swinging player on trumpet and mellophone (moonlighting liner annotator Mort Sahl indicates four instruments but doesn't identify them), and Elliott and Desmond exchange many fine contrapuntal ideas. Norm (Bob) Bates is on bass and "Joe Chevrolet" (Joe Dodge, of course) clicks swingingly on drums. This session can also be heard on the Quintet/Quartet CD. ~ Richard S. Ginell, AMG |

Nina Simone - Verve Jazz Masters 17 |

Artist: Nina Simone Album: Verve Jazz Masters 17 Label: Verve Year: 1964-1966 Release: 1993 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Time: 60:41 Size: 128MB Nina Simone's inclusion in Verve's Jazz Masters series is a bit suspect; there was a lot of jazz in Simone, true, but wasn't there quite a bit of pop and soul as well, not to mention some blues? Anyway, this is an excellent survey of her mid-'60s work, with 16 tracks spanning 1964 to 1966 that find Simone at her most versatile and assured. Quite a range is encompassed here: traditional folk ("Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair"), R&B (her jazzy rendition of "I Put a Spell on You"), Jacques Brel ("Ne Me Quitte Pas"), Billie Holiday ("Strange Fruit"), the Gershwins ("I Loves You, Porgy"), Rodgers & Hart ("Little Girl Blue"), and modern jazz (Nat Adderley's "Work Song"). Other highlights are the mesmerizing "See Line Woman" and the original version of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," which was a hit for the Animals shortly afterwards. On the two original compositions, "Four Women" and "Mississippi Goddam," Simone confronts racism in a head-on fashion rare for the time. Discographical details: the version of "Little Girl Blue" is a mono alternate take, and the recording of "My Baby Just Cares for Me" is not from the mid-'60s, but a 1987 live album. Artist: Buddy Guy Album: Left My Blues in San Francisco Label: Chess Records Year: 1967 Format, bitrate: Mp3, 160 kb/s Time: 32:45 Size: 37,7 Mb AMG Rating: It's hard to believe that Buddy Guy's first album, "Left My Blues in San Francisco" wasn't released until 1967, but at that time the Chess brothers simply did not know what to do with the young bluesman. Buddy first moved to Chicago in 1957. After cutting four sides for the Cobra label, he signed with Chess records mainly as a sideman for Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Willie Dixon. During this time, Buddy recorded in a style influenced by B.B. King, but he longed to stretch out as a showman and "blast that thing" in the style of Guitar Slim, a wild player from Guy's home state of Louisiana. "San Francisco" is an example of Buddy's style right before leaving Chess, playing in a restrained manner heavy on soul. . . . |

Artist: Toots Thielemans Album: Apple Dimple Year: 1979 Release: 1990 Label: Denon, Jazz Heritage Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 kbps Time: 38:59 Size: 90,4 MB The greatest whistler and harmonica player of all times is back! Please, welcome his rare Japanese LP in a marvellous mix of styles, which include Latin American jazz, Fusion, Be-bop, and certainly Mainstream. A rare Japanese fusion set from the legendary Toots Thielemans -- one that features his guitar and harmonica set up nicely with some Japanese players! Masahiko Satoh is the guiding force behind the set -- as his work on keyboards figures prominently on the record, and his arrangements really guide the groove -- hitting that perfectly soulful vibe you'd find in the best Japanese fusion sessions of this nature, without any of the slick or overdone tones you'd get from mainstream records in the US. Satoh plays acoustic piano, Korg, and oberheim -- and Toots also does some of his trademark whistling, too -- which is always a treat. Titles include "Midnight Cowboy", "Looking For Mr Goodbar"," Honesty", "Take The A Train", and "Sunday In New York". (HQ -- Hi Quality CD pressing!) © 1996-2009, Dusty Groove America, Inc. |

Artist: Ella Fitzgerald Album: Ella In Rome (The Birthday Concert) Label: Verve Records Year: 1958 Release: 1988 Format, bitrate: Mp3, 320 kb/s Time: 1:00:47 Size: 140 Mb (cover) AMG Rating: EVERY DAY IS AN OSCAR PETERSON DAY! This concert performance finds Ella Fitzgerald celebrating her 40th birthday. A top singer for 23 years at that point, she was at the peak of her powers. Backed by her regular rhythm section (with pianist Lou Levy, bassist Max Bennett and drummer Gus Johnson), she puts on her usual show of the period, uplifting the ballads and swinging the faster material. Highlights include "St. Louis Blues," "Caravan," "It's All Right with Me" and "I Can't Give You Anything but Love," during which she imitates both Louis Armstrong and Rose Murphy. This set concludes with a jam version of "Stompin' at the Savoy" with the Oscar Peterson Trio and drummer Gus Johnson. Scott Yanow, AMG |
