Roy Buchanan - Sweet Dreams: The Anthology |

Artist: Roy Buchanan Album: Sweet Dreams: The Anthology Label: Polydor/Chronicles Release: 1992 Format, bitrate: mp3 320 kb/s Time: 2:32:56 Size: 172 Mb + 181 Mb (full covers) This compendium could not be considered the final word on Roy Buchanan (guitar), as it would take more than two CDs just for his contributions as a session stalwart. However, until his catalog is given a thorough overhaul, Sweet Dreams: The Anthology (1992) is a satisfying overview of the man once dubbed "The Best Unknown Guitarist in the World." The collection kicks off with four previously unissued selections circa the aborted Nashville under the direction of Charlie Daniels. Although the project, tentatively dubbed "The Prophet," was eventually shelved, Buchanan's delicately pungent fretwork is unmistakably the centerpiece. . . . |

Artist: Oscar Pettiford Album: Vienna Blues: The Complete Session Label: Black Lion [CD 760104] Year: 1959 Release: 1994 Format: FLAC (cue+log) Time: 50:18 Size: 172+125 Mb After moving to Europe in Sept. 1958, bassist Oscar Pettiford recorded extensively during the last two years of his life. On this CD reissue, Pettiford doubles on cello and is joined by tenor saxophonist Hans Koller, up-and-coming guitarist Attila Zoller and drummer Jimmy Pratt. With the exception of "All the Things You Are," "Stardust" and "There Will Never Be Another You," all of the songs were written either by the leader or Koller. Good mainstream bop with hints (particularly in Zoller's playing) of more advanced styles. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

 Artist - Buddy ColletteAlbum - Jazz Loves Paris Label - OJC/Specialty Year - 1958, release - 1991 Quality - MP3@320 kbps Size - 91,6 mb Total time - 42:27
Çíàêîìûå ìåëîäèè ïîïóëÿðíûõ ïàðèæñêèõ ïåñåí â èñïîëíåíèè âåëèêîëåïíîãî ìóçûêàíòà! Buddy Collette (switching between alto, tenor, flute and clarinet) performs ten songs associated with Paris on this 1958 session originally cut for Specialty. The CD reissue adds four alternate takes to what is still a brief program. Collette utilizes the tuba of Red Callender in some of the ensembles quite colorfully and there is solo space for trombonist Frank Rosolino, guitarist Howard Roberts and bassist Red Mitchell; Bill Douglass or Bill Richmond contribute tasteful support on drums. Such melodies as "I Love Paris," "La Vie En Rose," "C'est Si Bon" and the "Song from 'Moulin Rouge" are given concise but swinging treatment on this likable date. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

The Eric Burdon Band - Sun Secrets |

 |
Artist: The Eric Burdon Band Album: Sun Secrets Label: Capitol Year: 1974 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kbps Time: 47:58 Size: 90,7 Mb Bubu's Rating: ***** Released without Eric Burdon's authorization, Sun Secrets is nothing for the singer to be ashamed of artistically. With approximately 24 minutes per side, Sun Secrets is a far cry from The Black Man's Burdon and the rhythms of the group War. As Mountain guitarist Leslie West would do a year after this when he formed the Leslie West Band, Burdon beats him to the punch with a self-titled group that rocks — rocks harder than the Animals, rocks harder than War. It's innovative reinvention, and quite pleasing, not only to hear the three-piece unit blitzing behind the singer as he reinterprets Animals classics like "When I Was Young," "It's My Life," or the Hendrix/Cream riff-laden version of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," but on the instrumental title track as well. The tragedy of it all is that, according to the singer's biography, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood by Eric Burdon with J.Marshall Craig (Thunder's Mouth Press), Burdon did not want this material out. The tapes were signed to Capitol and released without his permission. Produced by Jerry Goldstein, they are called "rehearsal tapes" by the singer and feature the original lineup of what he says in his book is "The first in a long series of Eric Burdon band(s)." Capitol released two different versions of this disc — the full-length commercial LP, and a "Radio Programming Aid" which has edits of everything except for the 13-minute Burdon co-write "Letter From the Country Farm." It's disheartening to read the agony for the star during these sessions and the touring from this period in his life, but it's refreshing to hear in these grooves that under adverse conditions the star still comes out on top artistically. - Joe Viglione at AMG |

Frank Zappa - Jazz From Hell |

Artist: Frank ZappaAlbum: Jazz From HellLabel: Barking Pumpkin Records, Capitol Records, Zappa Records Year: 1986 Release: 1986 Genre: Instrumental rock, experimental jazz Format, bitrate: mp3,VBR Time: 34:26 Size: 63.1 MB Jazz from Hell is an instrumental album. Zappa won a 1988 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for this album. While Frank Zappa had ostensibly been "on his own" since the dissolution of the Mothers of Invention in 1969, never before had he used the term "solo artist" as literally as he does on the Grammy Award winning (in the "Best Rock Instrumental Performance by an orchestra, group or soloist" category) Jazz from Hell (1986). After two decades of depending on the skills, virtuosity, and temperament of other musicians, Zappa all but abandoned the human element in favor of the flexibility of what he could produce with his Synclavier Digital Music System. With the exception of the stunning closer "St. Etienne" -- which is a guitar solo taken from a live performance of "Drowning Witch" at the Palais des Sports in St. Etienne, France on May 28, 1982 -- the remaining seven selections were composed, created, and executed by Zappa with help from his concurrent computer assistant Bob Rice and recording engineer Bob Stone. Far from being simply a synthesizer, the Synclavier combined the ability to sample and manipulate sounds before assigning them to the various notes on a piano-type keyboard. At the time of its release, many enthusiasts considered it a slick, emotionless effort. In retrospect, their conclusions seem to have been a gut reaction to the methodology, rather than the music itself. In fact, evidence to the contrary is apparent as it brims throughout the optimistic bounding melody and tricky time-signatures of "Night School." All the more affective is the frenetic sonic trajectory coursing through "G-Spot Tornado." Incidentally, Zappa would revisit the latter -- during one of his final projects -- when the Ensemble Modern worked up Ali N. Askin's arrangement for the Yellow Shark (1993). Another cut with a bit of history to it is "While You Were Art II," which is Zappa's Synclavier-rendered version of the Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar (1982) entry "While You Were Out." Speaking of guitar solos, as mentioned briefly above, "St. Etienne" is the only song on Jazz from Hell to feature a band and is a treat specifically for listeners craving a sampling of Zappa's inimitable fretwork. The six-plus minute instrumental also boats support from Steve Vai (rhythm guitar), Ray White (rhythm guitar), Tommy Mars (keyboards), Bobby Martin (keyboards), Ed Mann (percussion), as well as the prominent rhythm section of Scott Thunes (bass) and Chad Wackerman (drums). Zappa-philes should similarly note that excellent (albeit) amateur-shot footage of the number was included by Zappa on the companion Video from Hell (1987) home video. ~ Lindsay Planer, AMG |

1994-1995: Dave Brubeck - In Their Own Sweet Way |
Cool, Brubeck Dave |
 |
 |
Artist: Dave Brubeck Album: In Their Own Sweet Way Label: Telarc Year: 1994 - 1995 Format: Mp3, 320kb/s Size: 150Mb(90+60) Total time: 69:04 AMG rating A rare reunion of the far-flung Brubeck family, this attractive CD came about by sheer accident. A massive New York snowstorm caused the cancellation of a classical two-piano recording session and the Brubeck clan, then celebrating the holiday season at Dave's home in Wilton, Connecticut, happened to be available on short notice. Here the quartet -- Dave, Darius, Chris and Dan -- becomes a quintet for the first time with addition of cellist Matthew, whose straight classical technique adds a brooding dimension to the group in certain optimum settings, though he remains somewhat of an outsider. As do most of Dave's Telarc albums, this one has an autumnal tone as the mellowing septuagenarian pianist plays the wise old master, playing in a more lyrical, reflective manner, revisiting past work and contributing a few new tunes. When Dave and Darius play together, Dave still remains the more immediately striking personality while Darius leans more toward mainstream jazz styles. On the relaxed two-piano blues duet "Dave 'n Darius," the two blend well together without overloading the sound; Darius even adroitly picks up the ball where his dad's ideas leave off. Chris contributes most of the humorous touches, whether on bass or bass trombone, and Dan's drums offer mostly subtle support and cooking New Orleans funk (in 7/4 time!) on the sole non-Brubeck tune, "Sweet Georgia Brown." Dave Brubeck's Indian summer continues to be an unusually fruitful one. ~ Richard S. Ginell, All Music Guide |

Artist: Roy Buchanan Album: Buch And The Snake Stretchers Label: Boya Records Year: 1971 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kb/s Time: 33:23 Size: 85,3 Mb (full covers) AMG Rating: This homemade and self-produced platter was issued by Roy Buchanan (guitar/vocals) after being rejected by Polydor. The artist decided to privately distribute the album on his own BIOYA label, whose initials stood for the message that Buchanan had for Polydor — B(low) I(t) O(ut) Y(our) A(ss). For obvious contractual reasons, his name wasn't even intimated on the burlap bag (no joke) that housed first pressings of the 12" platter — which was sold only at underground stores, head shops, and Buchanan's gigs. . . . |

Artist: Ahmad Jamal Album: The Awakening Label: GRP Record Year: 1970 Release: 1997 Format, bitrate :mp3, 320 kb/s Size: 90Mb Time: 40:34 AMG Rating: The music on this CD has been reissued many times, most recently in 1997. By 1970, pianist Ahmad Jamal's style had changed a bit since the 1950s, becoming denser and more adventurous while still retaining his musical identity. With bassist Jamil Nasser (whose doubletiming lines are sometimes furious) and drummer Frank Gant, Jamal performs two originals (playing over a vamp on "Patterns"), the obscure "I Love Music" and four jazz standards. Intriguing performances showing that Ahmad Jamal was continuing to evolve. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
